Steps

  1. Search for coeurls in Skull Valley.
  2. Rescue the baby coeurl.
  3. Report to Skribyld.
Journal
  1. Skribyld requires assistance with an ongoing investigation.
  2. Skribyld explains to you the growing threat of coeurls still roaming the lands around Aleport. Fearful for the local populace, Skribyld feels there is no other choice but to exterminate the remaining coeurls. You are to head to Skull Valley and carry out this grievous task.
  3. You locate a coeurl, but find she has been slain by a pack of jackals, leaving behind a defenseless newborn. As you ponder what is to be done with the kitten, you are set upon by a pair of the grisly jackals. You defeat them with your usual flourish, but the question of how to care for the baby coeurl remains. Approach him with gentleness to see what comfort you might provide.
  4. To your surprise, the baby coeurl immediately warms to your presence. Take him back to Skribyld and report your findings.
  5. Although relieved to hear the coeurls running rampant in Aleport are no more, Skribyld is saddened by the loss of life and the now orphaned baby coeurl. Rather than leave him to fend for himself in the wilderness, Skribyld insists that you look after him, that he may grow to become a friend to man.
Hidden
Lore Skribyld fears the coeurls could start breeding, and it has happened before. Wild coeurls come from escaped war beasts. They were trained on the Pearl, an island at the mouth of the Rothlyt Sound.
Easter egg The Japanese title is 「魔獣が守ったもの」, 'what the beast protected'. It says what the English does not say. The mother coeurl killed by jackals died guarding her kitten.
Easter egg The Coeurl Kitten's tooltip says 'Coeurl got your tongue?'. It is a pun on 'cat got your tongue?'. People ask this teasing question when someone has gone quiet.
Easter egg Final Fantasy's coeurl and the displacer beast of Dungeons & Dragons both come from one creature. That creature is in the science-fiction novel The Voyage of the Space Beagle.
In-game text The Coeurl Kitten minion's journal says this about a coeurl facing odds it cannot beat. It will rarely back away from a fight. It chooses to die in battle rather than run.
Title reference The title changes the saying 'curiosity killed the cat'. That saying warns people not to be too nosy. Here the coeurl, Eorzea's big cat, takes the place of the cat.

What you know from earlier quests 1

What happens in this quest spoilers for this quest
  • Skribyld sadly orders the last coeurls killed, putting people's safety first. Hearing that only an orphaned kitten is left, Skribyld is saddened, reports some pirates were caught, and, since the Yellowjackets cannot raise a coeurl, leaves the kitten in your care.

Now then, we need to do something about the coeurls running wild in Vylbrand.

Jackals have greatly reduced their numbers, but the presence of coeurls will upset the balance of predation in Aleport. Given time, they will establish a breeding population, and perhaps even prey upon more than just animals.

‘They were driven into a corner in Skull Valley by the wolfhounds and are now fighting there for survival.’ English says jackals have cut the coeurls' numbers; German says the wolfhounds have cornered them.
‘That increases their brutality and makes them all the more dangerous.’ English fears coeurls will upset predation and breed; German says being cornered makes them more brutal and dangerous.
‘Hunted by wolf-dogs again and again, the coeurls have been cornered.’ English says jackals have cut the coeurls' numbers; Japanese says the coeurls are cornered.
‘By now, the coeurls' hostility is aimed not only at the wolf-dogs but at the pirates who set them on... no, at humans too.’ English fears coeurls will upset predation and breed; Japanese says their hostility now targets the pirates, even humans.

A large number of merchants, sailors, and travelers pass through Aleport daily, meaning a great many people will be at risk unless we stop the coeurls here and now.

As much as it pains me to say this, they must be done away with. I like this no more than you, but we Yellowjackets must put the safety of the people above all else.

Reports indicate that coeurls were last sighted somewhere in Skull Valley. When you are ready, pray seek them out and do what needs be done.

Welcome back, adventurer. How did you fare against the coeurls in Skull Valley?

I see... So this baby coeurl is all that remains. It is truly a shame it came to this.

  • DE Die Gefahr ist also gebannt. ‘So the danger has been averted.’ English laments that it came to this; German notes that the danger is averted.

Most of the jackals died fighting against coeurls, but it would seem you slew the pirates' last litter while saving this one. Let us at least take solace in knowing the bloodshed has ended.

‘It must be the last surviving specimen of the pack.’ English says most jackals died fighting coeurls; German says the cub must be the pack's last survivor.
‘A miracle that you made possible.’ English takes solace that the bloodshed has ended; German praises a miracle the listener made possible.
‘That this weak creature of all things escaped the vengeful jaws of the wolfhounds borders on a miracle.’ German calls the cub's survival a miracle you made possible; English speaks of the last litter slain and solace.

There is a bit of good news to be had, however. I received word not long ago that a group of pirates related to our investigation was taken into custody.

‘By the way, I was just told that the responsible pirates have all been arrested.’ English says a group of pirates was taken in; German says all the responsible pirates were arrested.
‘The pirates involved in this affair were arrested, but a lot of blood was shed, and it was an affair with a bad aftertaste...’ English frames the arrests as good news; Japanese says much blood flowed and the affair left a bad aftertaste.

To instigate such carnage without scruple... The true animals in this case have been placed behind bars. With any luck, their leader and remaining members will join them shortly.

‘Much blood has flowed, but thanks to you the war between the wolfhounds and the coeurls has been ended.’ English calls the jailed culprits the true animals; German says thanks to you the beasts' war has ended.
‘But with this, the pointless fight between the coeurls and wolf-dogs finally looks set to end.’ English calls the jailed culprits the true animals; Japanese says the pointless coeurl and wolf-dog fight is finally ending.

But what to do with this baby coeurl? He seems quite fond of you, almost as if you were his mother/father.

‘It doesn't exactly seem dangerous, the way it hangs on your coat-tails.’ English says the cub treats you almost like a parent; German says it hardly seems dangerous, clinging to you.

Hmmm...the Yellowjackets are not fit to care for a coeurl, especially when full grown. But we cannot simply release him back into the wilds. I suppose there is only one option.

‘It may not look dangerous, but a coeurl is still a coeurl. Even so, it pains me to take such a small life.’ Skribyld admits he thought about killing the cub. The English Skribyld only says the Yellowjackets cannot keep it.
‘But over time it will grow into a dangerous coeurl, and then things could get unpleasant.’ English says the Yellowjackets can't care for a coeurl; German warns it will grow into a dangerous coeurl.
  • DE Schließlich steckt ein Raubtier in ihm. ‘After all, there is a predator inside it.’ German warns the cub will grow into a dangerous predator; English says the Yellowjackets cannot keep it.

Friend, I leave this baby coeurl in your capable hands. I'm sure you will do what's best for him.

‘You will take care of the cub and raise it well, so that its bloodthirsty instincts do not sprout.’ English trusts you to do what's best for him; German orders you to raise him so his bloodthirsty instincts never sprout.
‘So that this little one does not go wrong, you raise him.’ English trusts you to do what's best for him; Japanese asks you to raise him so he does no wrong.
