Hidden
Easter egg Weggfarr's drug 'pluto' shares its name with Pluto, the ruler of the underworld in Greek and Roman myth.
FF nod The sandworms you fight are an old Final Fantasy monster. The Sand Worm first showed up in the original Final Fantasy and usually lives in deserts, just like these.
Characters 3
  • Hamon

Hamon has found and beaten all the training dummies. He feels close to his old strength and wants one more bout with you to get there.

What you know from earlier quests 6
    • #2 Way of the Pugilist: Hamon first mistakes you for his errand boy and panics about a dancer. Then he welcomes you to the guild, explains that pugilists fight fast with fists and feet, sends you to hunt vermin, and gives you a hunting log.
    • #25 Harder than Rock: Hamon makes you sprint around Ul'dah to collect his scattered gil, and teaches you to pace yourself. He sends you to fight earth sprites at the trial stones, praises you, and introduces his assistant Chuchuto. He mentions one other early student, then stops.
    • #46 Burning Up the Quarter Malm: Hamon teaches you the combo Bootshine, True Strike, then Snap Punch. He likes to tell how he beat the marauder Wideaxe. He took in Chuchuto and Rurukuta as starving orphans and worries about her slump. He lets you join other guilds.
    • #72 The Spirit Is Willing: Hamon agrees to catch somnus (a drug) smugglers for a fan. At the hideout he finds his student Rurukuta among them. Rurukuta reveals he saw a marmot beat Hamon. Hamon admits old age took his strength, apologizes, and leaves to be alone.
    • #110 Keeping the Spirit Alive: The hornet stingers remind Hamon of his youth. He fights you and feels alive again. His old rival Weggfarr Wideaxe offers a public rematch, the guild as prize, and Hamon accepts. He admits he is weak but says fighting you reminds him who he was.
    • #144 Star-crossed Rivals: Hamon has overtrained and hurt his back, so Chuchuto teaches you. He grumbles about the dangerous dummy spots and his hidden grog, says Chuchuto would make a fine guildmaster, calls Rurukuta good-hearted, and refuses to run from Weggfarr.
  • Chuchuto

Chuchuto stays behind to hold the fort at the guild while you and Hamon train out in the desert.

What you know from earlier quests 5
    • #25 Harder than Rock: Chuchuto is Hamon's right hand and his very first student, who joined just after he became guildmaster. She is cheerful, wants to master the art with you, and steers talk away from the past. She asks for her gil, needed for gear repairs.
    • #46 Burning Up the Quarter Malm: Chuchuto teases Hamon, who tells tales of beating Wideaxe but never shows his skill. She praises your fast progress. Hamon says she has been in a slump since her closest friend and rival, Rurukuta, vanished from the guild. Both were orphans Hamon took in.
    • #72 The Spirit Is Willing: Chuchuto fights beside you and explains that somnus, made from dream flowers, can cause endless sleep. She confronts Rurukuta at the hideout. After seeing Hamon's weakness, she still respects him, owes him her life, and teaches you Steel Peak to rekindle his spirit.
    • #110 Keeping the Spirit Alive: Chuchuto sends you to Drybone to strike the trees marked by Hamon's fists and fight hornet clouds, as he did in his youth. Her plan works. She is dismayed when Hamon agrees to Weggfarr's rematch with the guild as the prize.
    • #144 Star-crossed Rivals: Chuchuto has you place striking dummies in dangerous spots for Hamon's training. When Rurukuta attacks you, she defends you, fights him, and learns he only wants Hamon alive. She feels relieved, and hides Hamon's grog until he trains.
  • Rurukuta

Rurukuta is away from the Pugilists' Guild while Hamon trains for his rematch with Weggfarr.

What you know from earlier quests 4
    • #46 Burning Up the Quarter Malm: Hamon mentions Rurukuta as Chuchuto's closest friend and rival. Both were born to refugees, orphaned in the Calamity, and taken in by Hamon. Rurukuta suddenly disappeared, and nobody knows what became of him.
    • #72 The Spirit Is Willing: Rurukuta is the silver-haired Lalafell smuggling somnus (a drug) with the Alacran criminals. He left the guild after he secretly saw a common marmot beat Hamon. He calls Hamon a liar about his strength and flees after the fight.
    • #110 Keeping the Spirit Alive: Rurukuta arrives at the guild with Weggfarr Wideaxe, Hamon's old rival. Weggfarr says Rurukuta now works for him in the Alacran, and that he was surprised to learn Rurukuta trained under the Holyfist.
    • #144 Star-crossed Rivals: Rurukuta attacks you with his beasts, thinking you are a bad influence on Hamon. He left the guild in shock and fell in with bad people, but he only wants Hamon to live and avoid the fight. He leaves Hamon in your care.

Accepting the quest

Hamon

I'm pleased to say I managed to find and thwack all the dummies. You did well to deploy them where you did, lass/son. Thanks to you, I almost got killed several times!

  • JA じゃが、おかげでワシもかなり鍛えられたぞ! ‘But thanks to that, I got thoroughly trained!’ English jokes he almost got killed thanks to you; Japanese sincerely says it trained him well.

Meet Hamon at Forgotten Springs.

Hamon

But what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger, and I'm feeling stronger than I have in ages. As a matter of fact, I reckon I'm not far from regaining my former strength. One last step will get me there, and I'll take it by having another bout with you, [name].

Report to Hamon.

Hamon

I want you to meet me out in the Sagolii Desert, at a settlement called Forgotten Springs. The place is home to the most luscious Miqo'te maidens this side of Eorzea! Gods, I can't wait to take in their lovely forms again!

Come to Forgotten Springs out in the Sagolii Desert. Gods, I can't wait to behold the luscious maidens there again!

Chuchuto

I'm to hold the fort while you and Master Hamon train out in the desert. See you upon your return!

  • FR Il avait l'air pressé d'y aller. ‘He seemed in a hurry to go there.’ English says see you upon your return; French remarks that Hamon seemed in a hurry to go.

Hamon

This landscape takes me back, it does. Sand as far as the eyes can see... Crystal-clear spring waters cooling your feet... Scantily clad lasses giggling as they bathe and frolic...

I well remember these things, but my body has forgotten the seamless combinations that earned me the epithet of Holyfist.

That's where I'd have you enter, [name]. Sparring with you is what first got me back into the swing of things. Now it's time to finish the job. But before we begin, some warming up is in order.

I want you to take yourself across the dunes to the south and defeat five sandworms. I'll be waiting for you here.

What? Don't I need a warm-up, too? Oh, don't you worry, I had mine long before you arrived. Those enormous buggers never knew what hit them!

Hah hah hah! If you don't want to be outdone by this old man, you'd best run along and give them more of the same!

Have you seen to the sandworms yet? Don't keep me waiting too long─my joints are starting to stiffen up.

  • JA お主の成長を、ワシに確認させてくれ。 ‘Let me see for myself how much you have grown.’ English jokes his joints stiffen while he waits; Japanese asks to see how much you have grown.

Ah, so you've seen to the sandworms? Marvelous! Now the real training can begin!

  • JA 簡単に前には行かせてくれぬのう! ‘You won't let me get ahead of you easily, will you!’ English announces the real training can begin; Japanese says you will not let him get ahead easily.

Thanks to you, I've managed to get most of my stamina back. I'm confident that I can go the distance with the fittest of them.

  • JA じゃが、痛みに耐えても戦い続ける闘志を思い出さねば、奴を……ヴェッグファルを倒すことはできん! ‘But unless I remember the will to keep fighting through the pain, I can't defeat him... Weggfarr!’ English says he is confident he can go the distance; Japanese says he cannot beat Weggfarr without his old fighting will.

But if I'm to defeat Weggfarr, I'll need more than just endurance; I'll need to remember how each strike transitions to the next. And you're going to help refresh my memory...by pummeling the sense back into me!

I've...I've got it!

As a river flows to the sea, heedless of all that bars its path, so too must our combinations be! Ooh, that even rhymes!

  • FR J'ai retrouvé cet esprit combatif qui me permettait de ne jamais plier sous les coups, et d'en rendre dix fois plus que l'on m'en donnait ! ‘I have regained that fighting spirit which let me never bend under blows, and return ten times as many as I was given!’ English compares combinations to a river flowing to the sea; French speaks of never bending under blows.
  • JA 打たれても打たれても、折れない気持ち。 ‘A heart that won't break, no matter how many times it is struck.’ English compares combinations to a river flowing to the sea; Japanese speaks of a heart unbroken by blows.

Thank you, [name]! The raging torrent of your blows has been as a strike of lightning to my braincase. I remember...everything!

Chuchuto

M-Master! It's Weggfarr! The man is back in Ul'dah, and he's demanding that you fight him─now!

Hamon

So it begins... Very well, I will go to settle the score with Weggfarr. He will be the first to know that the Holyfist has returned!

Speak with Weggfarr on Emerald Avenue.

Weggfarr

Heh, I didn't expect ye to come so soon, if at all. Ye sure ye want to go ahead with this? I'm a man o' reason, an' I'd sooner not have to hurt ye. Just give up now, an' we can put an end to this mummer's farce. Ye can live out the rest o' yer days in peace.

Speak with Hamon at the Pugilists' Guild.

Hamon

The only mummer's farce I see is a man trying to squirm out of his own self-wrought challenge. Well, I'm going to make you the same offer: walk away, and you won't get hurt.

Use Snap Punch on Hamon Holyfist three times!

  • DE Benutze dreimal „Peitschenhieb“ gegen Hamon die Götterfaust! ‘Use "Whip Strike" three times against Hamon the Gods' Fist!’ English names the move Snap Punch; German calls it Whip Strike.
  • JA ハモンに崩拳を3回叩き込め! ‘Drive Collapsing Fist into Hamon three times!’ English names the move Snap Punch; Japanese calls it Collapsing Fist.

Defeat Hamon Holyfist!

Hamon

Hit me, [name]! With everything you've got!

Don't hold back!

Urgh! That's it! Give me more!

Yes! This pain... I can feel it working!

This feeling... This is it!

Hah hah hah! This is what I call growing pains!

  • FR Je peux encore m'améliorer ! ‘Ho ho ho! I can still improve!’ English puns on growing pains; French just says he can still improve.
  • DE Das nenne ich mal Schmerz! ‘Hahaha! Now that's what I call pain!’ English puns on growing pains; German just speaks of pain.

Now we fight! This time I'm going to give as much as I get!

I'm not finished yet!

Ngaaah! Mark me, the next round...will be mine...

Hah hah hah! Nothing can keep me down!

Brace yourself, [name]! I've a mind to finish this!

Hah hah hah! I'm nothing if not persistent!

  • DE Ich bin zäher als die zähsten Krötenleder-Fäustlinge! ‘Hahaha! I'm tougher than the toughest toad-leather mitts!’ English says he is nothing if not persistent; German jokes he is tougher than toad-leather mitts.

I...I have it!

Weggfarr

Gahahaha! I'll lop off yer heads an' shite down yer necks!

  • FR J'vais trancher vos têtes et m'en faire des trophées ! ‘Bwahahaha! I'm going to cut off your heads and make trophies of them!’ English crudely threatens to defile their necks; French threatens to make trophies of their heads.

Hamon

You leave Weggfarr to me!

Rurukuta

You heard Master Hamon! We take care of the minions!

Chuchuto

I have your back!

Rurukuta

Bloody hells, Weggfarr is maiming his own!

Chuchuto

Utter madness!

Keep clear of Weggfarr!

Weggfarr

Gahahaha! Yer tough as old mutton, Hamon!

Mayhap I'll try summat tenderer...like a slice o' yer adorable students!

  • JA 俺ぁちょうど、癇に障る小蝿が気になっててねぇ!!! ‘I've just been bothered by some irritating little flies!!!’ English jokes about trying something tenderer; Japanese instead complains of irritating little flies.

Hamon

No, Weggfarr! It's me you wanted to fight!

Chuchuto

Watch out, [name]! Weggfarr comes!

placeholder

They say Hamon Holyfist is going to perform his legendary technique!

Right here on the avenue!? Is it safe!?

  • FR Ouah, je ne manquerais ça pour rien au monde ! ‘Wow, I wouldn't miss this for anything in the world!’ English worries whether it is safe; French is thrilled and would not miss it.
  • JA コロセウムのカードより熱いじゃん!! ‘That's hotter than a Coliseum match card!!’ English worries whether it is safe; Japanese says it is hotter than a Coliseum match.

Weggfarr

Gahaha! I see age has robbed ye o' yer wits as well as yer strength!

Well, if yer so eager for pain, who am I to deny it to ye? Jus' remember, there ain't no goin' back once yer head goes flyin'.

  • DE Aber denk dran, es gibt kein Zurück mehr, wenn die Fäuste erst mal fliegen. ‘But remember, there is no going back once the fists start flying.’ English warns there is no going back once his head goes flying; German says once the fists fly.

Hamon

Just like old times... Eh, Weggfarr?

Crowd: Hurrah!!!

Did you see that!? Because I sure as hells didn't! He was too fast!

Weggfarr

Nooo! Th-This can't be! I refuse to be beaten by a senile old fool!

Get yer arses out here, all o' ye!

'Case yer wonderin', that was pluto!

Just a draft of it, an' yer body turns hard as iron! Not even blades can pierce it!

Hamon

Hmph, stubborn bugger...

Chuchuto

Rurukuta!? But...why?

Rurukuta

I refuse to fight on the side of cheats.

Weggfarr

Gahahahahaha! Say yer prayers to whatever gods ye keep!

By the time I'm finished, not even yer mothers'll recognize ye!

Chuchuto

You...you did it, Master Hamon! You won!

Rurukuta

Master...

Hamon

No, Chuchuto─we won. This victory wasn't mine alone.

Holy fisticuffs, that was incredible! You wiped the avenue with those crooks!

I'm going to tell my grandchildren tales of what happened here!

  • FR Mes amis ne me croiront jamais quand je leur dirai ce que j'ai vu ! ‘My friends will never believe me when I tell them what I saw!’ English plans to tell grandchildren about it; French says friends will never believe it.
  • JA さすが拳聖のハモン率いる、格闘士ギルドの連中だ! ‘That's the Pugilists' Guild led by Hamon the Fist Saint for you!’ English plans to tell grandchildren about it; Japanese praises the guild led by Hamon.

Our work here is done. Let's all go home─to the guild!

Rurukuta

The guild hasn't changed one bit...

Hamon

I want to thank you again, [name]. It's because of you I was able to rekindle my fighting spirit and conquer my demons.

Perhaps even more importantly, Rurukuta's come to his senses, and Chuchuto's back to her bubbly self.

Rurukuta

Please forgive me, Master. I will have no more to do with the Alacran. I will roam the land till I find myself, and strive to become a great pugilist like you.

Chuchuto

You've only just returned, and you're leaving us already? I don't suppose there is aught I can say that will change your mind. But if you ever want for company or a sparring partner, know that you're always welcome here.

  • JA やだやだ、かっこつけちゃって。 ‘Ugh, ugh, acting all cool.’ English laments he is leaving so soon after returning; Japanese teases him for acting cool.
  • JA ……ま、男のロマンってやつなんでしょ? ‘...Well, it's that "man's romance" thing, isn't it?’ English says nothing will change his mind; Japanese teases that it is a man's romantic dream.

Hamon

Hah hah hah! Youthful vigor's a truly blessed thing! Go well, my boy. There's not a doubt in my mind that you'll do me proud.

As for you, [name]. Your combinations were a sight to behold...and right painful to receive. In helping me with my training, you've come into your own as a pugilist.

You have grown strong, [name], but your journey as a pugilist is far from over. To get as far as I have, you'll have to overcome many and more trials and tribulations.

But whatever challenges threaten to block your way, I'm confident that you'll be able to blaze yourself a path.

So long as your spirit burns bright and your fists fly with conviction, there's nothing you can't achieve. I'm the living proof!

Forge onward, young one, and create a legend for yourself never to be forgot!
