Journal
  1. Arenlona is in a bit of a tight spot.
  2. Arenlona asks you to sprinkle aphid nectar upon Althyk lavender to lure little ladybugs, then squash them into three phials' worth of ladybug viscera.
  3. You have obtained the required amount of ladybug viscera. Deliver them to Arenlona.
  4. Arenlona explains that, since ladybugs are natural predators of aphids, the ladybug viscera will keep the aphids at bay. She insists that this is all very scientific.
Hidden
Easter egg The joke is in what Arenlona admits. The living ladybugs were already protecting the crops. But squashing them is more 'scientific'.
In-game text The item text of the viscera describes a 'moss-green ooze'. It leaks from the cracked shell 'after crushing an innocent, defenseless ladybug'.
Title reference The title points to Tim Burton's film Beetlejuice (1988). It is also literal. Ladybugs are beetles, and here you squash them for their juice.
Characters 1
  • Arenlona

Arenlona is making a liquid to spread on crops to keep pests away, and needs someone to catch and squash ladybugs for it.

What you know from earlier quests 2
    • #27 Bait and Swat: Arenlona is glad Anaoc has dropped his naive hope that the kobolds would calm down alone. Arenlona explains that kobold numbers have grown and food is short, so hunger drives their raids. The plan: set food as bait and let hunger undo them.
    • #40 Whack-a-Mole: Arenlona spent years breeding ogre pumpkins that resist fire, drought, frost, pests and festive rituals, yet moles still steal them. She decides to keep seeking complex solutions and have you do the killing. Her name means 'Harvest Gatherer' in old Roegadyn.
What happens in this quest spoilers for this quest
  • Arenlona reasons that aphids fear ladybugs, so the scent of ladybug blood on crops keeps aphids away; she calls this manipulating nature. She admits living ladybugs already protect the crops, but sees no science in that.
What the Japanese, French and German versions say 7

Japanese

EN Beetle Juice · Whack-a-Mole

JA 「本草学者アレンロナの挑戦」, 'The Challenge of Arenlona the Herbalist' · 本草学者アレンロナの復讐, 'the Herbalist's Revenge'

The two titles make a pair, while the English titles do not.

EN 'Arenlona asks you to sprinkle aphid nectar upon Althyk lavender to lure little ladybugs, then squash them into three phials' worth of ladybug viscera.'

, 'Sprinkle the translucent slime on Althyk lavender, slay the ladybugs drawn by the smell, and get 3 cups of moss-coloured body fluid.'

The items are named by their look, not by what they are.

Name origin

EN 'Sprinkle aphid nectar upon Althyk lavender and obtain three phials of ladybug viscera.' · 'Arenlona asks you to sprinkle aphid nectar upon Althyk lavender to lure little ladybugs, then squash them into three phials' worth of ladybug viscera.'

FR «Asperger les fleurs de lavande d'Althyk de liquide translucide et obtenir 3 fioles de mucus verdâtre», 'Sprinkle Althyk lavender flowers with translucent liquid and get 3 phials of greenish mucus'

DE „Arenlona hat ein neues Pflanzenschutzmittel entwickelt, für dessen Produktion sie drei Becher gallefarbene Käfer-Absonderung braucht.“, 'Arenlona has developed a new pesticide, and to make it she needs three cups of bile-coloured beetle secretion.'

French and German also name the items by their look. The English names the source.

French

Title

EN Beetle Juice

FR «Du jus de bête à bon dieu», 'Ladybird juice'

«bête à bon Dieu», 'the good Lord's creature', is the folk name of the ladybird: a holy nickname for the very insects you squash here.

Different

EN 'Arenlona explains that, since ladybugs are natural predators of aphids, the ladybug viscera will keep the aphids at bay.'

FR «Arenlona vous a révélé que le mucus verdâtre allait lui servir de répulsif contre les pucerons qui infestent ses plantations.», 'Arenlona told you that the greenish mucus would serve her as a repellent against the aphids that infest her crops.'

You collect no viscera, just what the ladybirds give off. Arenlona only hopes its smell will keep the aphids away.

Different

EN 'You sense a hostile presence!'

FR «Vous entendez un léger bourdonnement !», 'You hear a faint buzzing!'

This warning comes before the ladybirds attack, in place of the usual alert.

German

Different

EN 'Arenlona asks you to sprinkle aphid nectar upon Althyk lavender to lure little ladybugs, then squash them into three phials' worth of ladybug viscera.'

DE „Erlege diese Marienkäfer, bis du genug von ihrer gallefarbenen Absonderung gesammelt hast.“, 'Slay these ladybirds until you have gathered enough of their bile-coloured secretion.'

No viscera here either: Arenlona wants „gallefarbene Käfer-Absonderung“, 'bile-coloured beetle secretion', for her new crop protection.

Care to partake in the inexorable march of science?

‘I imagine what I told you the other time made you want to take part in my work.’ English grandly invites you into the inexorable march of science; French simply into her work.
‘Won't you make yourself useful for the good of the Gockelburg?’ English invites you into the inexorable march of science; German asks you to help for the good of the Gockelburg.
‘Hey, won't you do a little work for the development of this farm?’ English invites you into the inexorable march of science; Japanese asks you to work for the farm's development.

The concoction I'm currently formulating could change horticulture as we know it! Imagine, a fluid one could strew over crops to ward off pests.

‘That's lucky, because I'm just developing a new product, and I need someone to get me the necessary material.’ English boasts the concoction could change horticulture; French says she needs someone to fetch the material.
‘I have just developed a new plant protection agent, for which I need a special ingredient: a bile-colored secretion.’ English boasts the concoction could change horticulture; German says she needs a special ingredient for it.
‘I'm developing a new pesticide right now, and I'd like you to gather its ingredients.’ English boasts the concoction could change horticulture; Japanese just asks you to gather its ingredients.

All I need are some ladybugs and someone to squash them.

Ladybugs simply cannot resist aphids. Find some Althyk lavender, dab it with a bit of aphid nectar, and they'll come swarming to the slaughter.

Return to me once you've collected three phials of ladybug viscera.

It's elementary, really. Aphids live in fear of ladybugs, and so applying the scent of ladybug blood to our crops is certain to ward off the parasites. We are manipulating the laws of nature.

Of course, we could have just let the ladybugs go on defending the crops as always and not squash them for their viscera, but I hardly see the science in that.

  • FR Il ne me reste plus qu'à vérifier ma théorie. ‘All that's left for me is to test my theory.’ English jokes that just sparing the ladybugs would not be scientific; French says she now only has to test her theory.
  • DE Man muss es halt mal ausprobieren. ‘You just have to try it out.’ English jokes that just sparing the ladybugs would not be scientific; German says it simply has to be tried out.
‘What happens if we spray a solution made from this fluid on the fields... it's worth a try, isn't it?’ English jokes that just sparing the ladybugs would not be scientific; Japanese says the spray is worth trying.
  • FR Enfin, c'est ce que j'espère. ‘Well, that is what I am hoping.’ French has her admit it is only a hope to be tested; English jokes that sparing the ladybugs isn't science.
  • DE So habe ich es mir jedenfalls ausgedacht. ‘That is how I thought it up, at any rate.’ German has her admit it is an untested idea; English jokes that sparing the ladybugs isn't science.
