Steps

  1. Speak with Mutamix.
Journal
  1. Kokosamu would share news of his master's latest advance in the arcane art of materia manipulation.
  2. As Kokosamu tells it, Master Mutamix has developed a method for combining multiple pieces of unneeded materia to give them new form and life─a procedure known as transmutation. He encourages you to speak with the esteemed goblin scholar, that you might enlighten yourself as to the specifics.
  3. While the precise process of materia transmutation is too complex to be imparted to a layman, Mutamix generously offers to perform the procedure whenever you so desire. To take the goblin up on his offer, you need only bring him five pieces of unwanted materia.
Hidden
Lore When Kokosamu says 'Nymeia willin'', he calls on Nymeia, the goddess of fate. It fits, since the new materia you get from transmutation is left to chance.

Kokosamu

Riddle me this, friend─have ye ever found yerself in the unfortunate situation where yer pockets were near to burstin' with all manner o' materia, save for the sorts ye wanted the most?

‘Hoarding carbonic matter doesn't let you line your pockets anymore.’ English asks about pockets full of materia except the wanted kind; French says carbonic matter no longer pays.
‘We can't make money off "coal matter" anymore, but the materia market has livened up to make up for it!’ English asks about pockets full of materia except the wanted kind; Japanese says coal matter no longer pays.

Well, I have, and I tell ye, it felt like I'd brought a sack full o' fishin' poles to a gold mine. Now, I ask ye: what if there were a way to melt down a couple pieces of materia that weren't availin' you naught, and mold them into a shiny new piece that─Nymeia willin'─just might strike yer fancy?

‘The problem is that you can't guess in advance what you'll get by materializing a spiritbonded item...’ English jokes about bringing fishing poles to a gold mine; French says you can't predict what you'll get.
‘Well, I have, and I'll tell you: it was like going into a battle with a pile of dishes.’ English compares it to bringing fishing poles to a gold mine; German to going into battle with dishes.
‘But what kind of materia you get is down to luck...’ English jokes about bringing fishing poles to a gold mine; Japanese says the materia you get is down to luck.

Now, if yer as sharp as I reckon ye are, ye can already see where I'm headin' with this. Aye, that's right─thanks to Master Mutamix, now ye can do just that! Or at least, Master Mutamix can do it for ye.

‘Under these conditions, we gatherers have no chance of selling our carbonic matter.’ English announces Master Mutamix's solution; French complains gatherers cannot sell their carbonic matter.
‘Naaa, if you're as smart as I look, you already know how the marmot-squirrel runs.’ English plainly calls you sharp; German jokes "as smart as I look" and twists a saying with a marmot-squirrel.
‘Then those of us trying to sell off "coal matter", us gatherers, are out of business too.’ English announces Master Mutamix's solution; Japanese complains gatherers selling coal matter are out of business.

This most handy procedure is somethin' we like to call shifty-makin'. Rather, that's what Master Mutamix calls it. Meself, I've coined the term transmutation, which I'm hopin' might find favor with adventurers like yerself.

How's it all work, ye ask? I could tell ye, but why ask the student when ye can learn from the master? You'll find Mutamix right over there, likely jumpin' out of his boots lookin' to trade tongueflaps about his discovery.

‘Of course, here too a lot is left to chance, but this process lets people swap materia they don't use for something better!’ English defers the explanation to the master; French warns that chance plays a big part here too.
‘This too is down to luck, mind you... but it's a chance to turn unwanted stuff into new materia!’ English defers the explanation to the master; Japanese warns this too is down to luck.

Speak with Mutamix.

Mutamix

Pshhh... Shkohhh... Uplander seeks knowings of shifty-making, yes? Then uplander should make openears to tongueflaps of Mutamix.

‘The adventurer knows it: there are lots of different materia, with various effects and grades.’ English asks if you seek knowledge of shifty-making; French notes there are many materia of different grades.
‘Shkohh... shkohh... Materia, materira, colorful materida, materiga, all sorts there be~.’ English asks if you seek knowledge of shifty-making; Japanese sings a rhyming jingle of materia names.

Process of shifty-making is of big help-use. First, be taking five need-not materia, yes? Melty-mix this one, mixy-melt that one, squeeze and squash, then bigeyes! Five need-not are reborn as one shiny-new!

  • DE Mutagenix kann nicht lernengeben an Andereleute. ‘Mutagenix cannot learn-give to other-folks.’ English goblin describes the mixing steps; German says Mutagenix cannot teach it to others.

Shkohhh! But shifty-making is not simple like crafty-making. Knowings of shifty-making are much and many, and uplander's braincase─though big for uplander─is small.

‘In that case, she/he need only bring five materia and Mutamix will give her/him a demonstration!’ English says your braincase is too small for it; French invites you to bring five materia for a demonstration.
  • DE Bringzzu fünf nichtbrauchen Materia. ‘Bring-you five not-need materia.’ English says your braincase is too small for it; German tells you to bring five unneeded materia.
‘If you want to try it, bring them here~!’ English says your braincase is too small for it; Japanese sings that you should bring materia to try.

Uplander need not be making worry-face. If uplander has many need-not materia, bring them to tent-ring. Mutamix will shifty-make for uplander!

‘But the adventurer must know that even Mutamix can't predict the result!’ English tells you not to worry; French warns that even Mutamix can't predict the result.
  • DE Aber darfzzu nicht zuviele Wunderhoffen, khoo. ‘But mustn't-you hope for too many wonders, khoo.’ English tells you not to worry; German warns you not to hope for miracles.
‘What you get is all up to luck~!’ English tells you not to worry; Japanese sings that the result is down to luck.
