  1. Lyulf, a farmer at the Swiftperch settlement, needs your assistance with another part of his restoration scheme.
  2. To help Lyulf begin his dodo-raising endeavor, seek out the dodo nests scattered throughout the Flock and gather three fertilized eggs.
  3. You have gathered three fertilized dodo eggs. Return to Swiftperch and deliver them to the waiting Lyulf.
  4. Ready now to begin raising dodos in earnest, Lyulf is giddy with the thought of restoring Swiftperch to its former heights of agricultural glory. You can only hope that the eggs you acquired for the farmer will help contribute to the salvation of this Calamity-ravaged land.
Hidden
Lore The wild dodos around Swiftperch were once its farm birds. Lyulf's father bred them. They escaped during the Calamity and became wild.
Lore Until patch 5.3, Farmer of Fortune unlocked this quest. That quest is now cut. The 'buried fortune' of Lyulf's father was wheat seeds. That is why Lyulf dreams of 'golden fields of wheat'.
Lore The Flock, where the dodos nest, was once tall wheat. There are not enough farmers, so the fields have not been farmed for five years. Wild dodos have taken the area back.
In-game text Encyclopaedia Eorzea has a warning that fits this quest. Would-be bird farmers should be careful. This is because a dodo defending itself will spit out a liquid that causes sleep.
In-game text The item text of each fertilized dodo egg calls it warm and heavy. It says that, if left alone, the egg would likely hatch in just a few weeks.

What the Japanese and German versions say 3

Japanese

EN Need to Breed

JA 「開拓者リウルフの発起」, 'Lyulf the Pioneer Sets Out'

The title marks Lyulf's first step as a settler opening wild land. He means to rebuild Swiftperch as in his father's day.

German

Title

EN Need to Breed

DE „Alle meine Dodos“, 'all my dodos'

The title parodies „Alle meine Entchen“, 'all my little ducklings', a classic children's song. It fits raising a brood of dodos.

Different

EN 'This really is rather exciting! Every day I take another step closer to my vision of a Swiftperch surrounded by golden fields of wheat and echoing with the calls of plump, waddling dodos!'

Das macht Hoffnung auf eine Zukunft ohne Hunger.“, 'Ah, I can already see them, well-fed dodos beside golden wheat fields! It gives hope for a future without hunger.'

Lyulf breeds the dodos to fill the poor farmers' empty stomachs with bird meat. The English vision has no hunger in it.

Lyulf

All these wild dodos you see about the place were actually once domesticated birds, bred by my father. They broke loose during the chaos of the Calamity and gradually became the feral, ill-tempered creatures we now do our best to avoid.

But if I am to restore Swiftperch to the very same settlement it was when my father was alive, then I must also try my hand at dodo-raising. And, as you have likely surmised, I shall require your adventurer's resourcefulness in this endeavor.

For the initial stage of my dodo-rearing enterprise, I need you to head into the Flock and seek out dodo nests. You'll be looking for fertilized eggs─three of them should do nicely for now.

But pray be careful when liberating the eggs. The adult dodos will not take kindly to an intruder making off with their offspring!

Deliver the dodo eggs to Lyulf at Swiftperch

Lyulf

With three eggs, I should be able to experiment with breeding. Success or failure is not terribly important─to begin with, I mean only to gain some practical experience with the birds.

‘And besides, it will let me follow in my father's footsteps.’ English says he only wants practical experience with the birds; French says it lets him follow his father's footsteps.

Yes, you did exceptionally well in selecting only fertilized eggs! Now that I consider it, I'm not entirely sure how you managed to tell... In any case, I must raise the naturally aggressive dodo from the egg if I am to have any chance of surviving the breeding process.

‘I knew I could count on someone good like you!’ English jokes he's unsure how you could tell which eggs were fertilized; French says he knew he could count on you.
‘You know, raising dodos from the egg is the only way to tame their natural aggressiveness.’ English jokes about him surviving the breeding; French speaks only of taming the birds' aggressiveness.
‘I'm glad I left it to you.’ English jokes he's unsure how you could tell which eggs were fertilized; Japanese says he's glad he entrusted it to you.
‘To turn the ferocious dodo into docile livestock, I absolutely must raise it from the egg.’ English jokes about him surviving the breeding; Japanese speaks only of making the birds docile livestock.

Apart from encouraging a more docile behavior while the bird is but a chick, it is imperative that I remove the gland that produces that infamous poisonous breath. My father's notes quite graphically depict the consequences of failing to do so.

‘My father had also explained to me that you have to remove the gland that lets them spit venom while they are still chicks.’ English speaks of a gland producing poisonous breath; French of a gland that lets them spit venom.
‘You see, you have to remove the dodos' salivary glands while they're still small, so that later they don't spit poison.’ English speaks of a gland producing poisonous breath; German of salivary glands, so they don't spit poison.
  • DE Das hat mir zumindest mein Vater erzählt. ‘At least that's what my father told me.’ English says his father's notes graphically show what happens otherwise; German just hedges that his father told him so.
‘It's all just secondhand from my father, though.’ English says his father's notes graphically show what happens otherwise; Japanese admits it's all secondhand from his father.

This really is rather exciting! Every day I take another step closer to my vision of a Swiftperch surrounded by golden fields of wheat and echoing with the calls of plump, waddling dodos!

‘In any case, I'll do everything I can so that he is proud of me, up there.’ English expresses excitement; French vows to make someone up above proud of him.
‘You'll see, I'm going to make this place a true Eden.’ English pictures golden wheat fields and plump, waddling dodos; French promises simply a true Eden.
