  1. Slay megalocrabs.
  2. Report to W'dhovaka at the Skylift.
Journal
  1. W'dhovaka, a Skylift operator, is looking for someone to assist with her megalocrab woes.
  2. Each time a balloon envelope is ruined, it reduces the amount of cargo the Skylift operation can transport. Slay five megalocrabs and help keep the crates moving.
  3. You have slain the megalocrabs. Return to the Skylift and report to W'dhovaka.
  4. Thanks to your shell-cracking efforts, the balloon envelopes are safe from marauding megalocrabs for a time. With the demand for cargo transport ever growing, however, a more permanent solution to the problem seems in order.
Hidden
Lore W'dhovaka swears 'for the love o' Llymlaen'. This is a natural oath for a Lominsan. Llymlaen, goddess of navigation, is the guardian god of Limsa Lominsa.
Lore The reward W'dhovaka pays for this quest is not just gil. It also includes a bonus of Ice Shard ×23.
Lore Lominsan engineers built the Skylift. It is a tower made of wooden scaffolding, with pulleys, winches and lighter-than-air balloons. These are the very balloons in danger here.
Easter egg W'dhovaka yells that 'the leather's ripped'. Then she quickly has to make clear that she means the leather of her balloons, not her trousers.
In-game text Encyclopaedia Eorzea says many eager hunters have broken a fang on a megalocrab's very hard shell. Some even broke a blade. They were trying to reach the juicy meat inside.
Title reference The title plays on 'hung out to dry'. This saying means being left alone in trouble. The title takes it word for word. W'dhovaka left her balloon envelopes out to dry on the rocks.
Characters 1
  • W'dhovaka

W'dhovaka is a Skylift operator. Megalocrabs have ripped the leather balloon envelopes she left drying on the rocks.

What happens in this quest spoilers for this quest
  • W'dhovaka swears by Llymlaen, Limsa's guardian goddess of navigation, and has to explain the ripped leather is not her trousers. Fewer balloons mean less cargo lifted. After you kill five crabs, she wants a more lasting fix, as loads keep growing.
What the Japanese, French and German versions say 7

Japanese

EN Out to Dry

JA 「切り裂きクラブ」, 'Crab the Ripper'

The title is a pun on 「切り裂きジャック」, 'Jack the Ripper', the killer's Japanese name. These megalocrabs slash W'dhovaka's balloons.

Name origin

EN Out to Dry

JA 「切り裂きクラブ」, 'Crab the Ripper'

DE „Scherenschnitt“, 'scissor cut' · Schere, also a 'claw'

The German title keeps the slashing crab of the Japanese one. French and English make their own puns.

French

Title

EN Out to Dry

FR «Sans se serrer la pince», 'without shaking pincers'

The title plays on «se serrer la pince», slang for 'to shake hands'. «pince» is both 'hand' and 'pincer', so no handshakes with these crabs.

Speech style

EN 'Ah, for the love o' Llymlaen, not again! The leather's ripped to bloody shreds!' · 'Less balloons in the air means less cargo gettin' lifted, an' that don't sit too well with me.'

FR «Raah ! !», 'Raah! Those blasted crustaceans have come poking their pincers where they shouldn't again...!' · «Chaque ballon à réparrrer signifie une réduction de la quantité de marchandises que l'on peut transporter ici.», 'Every balloon to repair means less cargo we can carry here.'

W'dhovaka's rolled r's are written out on the page. The English gives her a sailor's brogue instead.

Wordplay

EN 'It's the megalocrabs─they've been at the balloon envelopes I left out to dry on the rocks. Those hells-spawned snippers think they've found a squid or somethin' an' set to nibblin'.'

Ils commencent sérrrieusement à me pomper l'air !», 'No, no, I'd put a balloon envelope out to dry, but the megalocrabs must have taken it for prey, because they've poked it full of holes. They're seriously starting to get on my nerves!'

«pomper l'air», literally 'to pump the air', means to annoy someone. The pun fits, since the crabs puncture her balloons. The English has no pun here.

German

Title

EN Out to Dry · 'It's the megalocrabs─they've been at the balloon envelopes I left out to dry on the rocks.'

The megalocrabs have used their claws to cut up the balloon envelope I'd laid out to dry.'

„Scherenschnitt“ is the craft of scissor-cut paper silhouettes, and „Schere“, 'scissors', is also a crab's claw. Here the balloon is the paper, snipped to shreds.

Different

EN 'Those hells-spawned snippers think they've found a squid or somethin' an' set to nibblin'.'

DE „Vielleicht macht sie die Farbe aggressiv ... oder was weiß ich ...“, 'Maybe the colour makes them aggressive... or who knows...'

W'dhovaka has a different guess than in English for why the crabs attack.

W'dhovaka

Ah, for the love o' Llymlaen, not again! The leather's ripped to bloody shreds! Hm? No, there's naught awry with me breeches, ye cheeky sod.

  • FR Raah ! ! ‘Raah! Those blasted crustaceans have come poking their pincers where they shouldn't again...!’ W'dhovaka's rolled r's are written out on the page. The English gives her a sailor's brogue instead.
‘Those blasted crustaceans have come poking their pincers where they shouldn't again...!’ French builds the innuendo on pincers poking where they shouldn't; English says the leather is ripped.
‘Ah, let me reassure you, it is nothing that modesty would stop me from telling you.’ French teases that it's nothing indecent; English has her snap that her breeches are fine, "cheeky sod".

Less balloons in the air means less cargo gettin' lifted, an' that don't sit too well with me. Ye lookin' for a quick job? How 'bout ye crack a few shells afore ye head off on yer way? If ye could put down five or so o' the buggers, that ought to do for now.

Report to W'dhovaka at the Skylift

W'dhovaka

Ye take care o' them snippers? Good bloody riddance! Nice work there, lass/lad.

‘You chopped those nasty megalocrabs into sticks?’ English simply asks if you dealt with them; French jokes that you chopped the crabs into sticks.

Still, it won't be long afore a new crew o' crabs comes sidlin' in to claim that territory. And our loads just keep gettin' heavier, what with all the rebuildin' going on. If I don't want to be buried under a mountain o' crates, I'd best think of a more lastin' solution to this snipper problem.
