What you know from earlier quests 3

Edda says he ran out of range before the healing spell was done, and wishes they had eased his burden. Left alone by the others, Edda begs them to stay and asks Avere for forgiveness.
- #74 Into a Copper Hell: Edda tells you Avere, the party leader, was killed in Gridania. They were to marry in spring, and he admired you deeply. Edda thought of quitting, but you inspire her to train again in her home village. She asks your name: "I shan't forget."

Ywain, guildmaster of the Lancers' Guild, waits to set you your final trial.
What you know from earlier quests 6
- #4 Way of the Lancer: Ywain teaches that lancers always attack and wear light armor to move fast. He values courage above all. He accepts you, sends you to kill squirrels, ladybugs and funguars, then gives you a hunting log listing creatures to train on.
- #21 Spear of the Fearless: Ywain teaches two sides of a lancer's courage: composure, staying calm when outnumbered, and resolve, daring to attack despite fear. A mysterious lancer challenges him; he refuses to be provoked and says you are only a novice. He tells you to ignore such challengers.
- #44 Courage of Stone: Ywain sends you for the
Stone of Courage on Naked Rock. Angry that Foulques moved it, he calls that man's words vain nonsense: a lancer's courage comes from composure and resolve. He lets you join other guilds, but hopes you master the lance first. - #68 A Dangerous Proposition: Ywain sends you to protect a young lancer who left to duel Foulques. On your return he praises your calm courage and teaches you Piercing Talon. He fears Foulques could do great harm and wants to stop him.
- #88 Lance of Destiny: Ywain tests you against three lancers. When Foulques vows to shut the guild, Ywain bets its fate on your lance. To him, rushing into danger is folly, not courage. He praises your calm before the Lord of the Bramble Patch.
- #137 Questions and Lancers: Ywain laughs at Vauxclairt's
demand that he visit. He is proud that all three masters approve of you. He says only one last trial remains before you are a full lancer and can leave the guild.

Accepting the quest
Help me! Please!
G-Get them away from me!
Nooo! I don't want to die!
Foulques
We settle this once and for all!
Urgh! You will not get the better of me!
You think me without honor? To hells with your honor!
‘I will not lose to a coward!’ English dismisses honor outright; French says he will not lose to a coward.
- DE Über Ehre entscheidet der Sieger! ‘The victor decides what honor is!’ English says to hells with honor; German says the victor decides what honor is.
‘Hmph, you look as if you want to say that using monsters in a duel is cowardly...!’ English: you think me without honor; Japanese: you seem to call using monsters in a duel cowardly.
I fight for victory, and I will stop at nothing to attain it!
‘I fight to win, and I show no regard for the cowards of the guild!’ English says he will stop at nothing to win; German says he has no regard for the guild's cowards.
‘I am in a different class from the cowards who just play around at the guild!’ English says he will stop at nothing to win; Japanese says he outclasses the guild's playful cowards.
You are the sole lancer worthy of the name! By defeating you, I will prove my courage!
What kept you?
Helping your comrades, you say? Fool. You waste your pity on false friends.
It is only a matter of time before they betray you. Aye, just like those wretches who saw me imprisoned and exiled.
I was once an upright citizen of Gridania, and a man of the Lancers' Guild. Yet life was not easy. For want of the coin to obtain the barest necessities, I conspired with my closest comrades to steal from the guild's coffers.
The theft soon came to light, and though there were no suspects, it was clear that the deed had been perpetrated by someone within the ranks. An air of suspicion hung heavy over the guild from that day forth, until at last, unable to bear the guilt, I convinced my accomplices to join me in confessing...
‘When we were discovered, my so-called friends feigned innocence and pointed their fingers at me.’ English says the theft came to light with no suspects; German says they were discovered.
‘When we were discovered, my so-called friends feigned innocence and pointed their fingers at me.’ English: he persuaded his accomplices to confess with him; German: his friends feigned innocence and pointed at him.
...Only for them to bite their craven tongues after I had stepped forward and admitted my part in the crime. And so it was that I alone took the blame! “Of course it was the Duskwight,” everyone said. “Was there ever any doubt?” It all made perfect sense!
‘Then I realized that the Lancers' Guild is a gang of cowards who are afraid of us Duskwights.’ English: everyone said of course it was the Duskwight; German: the guild are cowards who fear Duskwights.
‘That those lancers feared me, a Duskwight, envied me, and sought to entrap me.’ English: everyone said of course it was the Duskwight; Japanese: the lancers feared, envied and framed him.
Despite my heartfelt pleas, my so-called friends denied any involvement. Instead they called me vulgar names that I do not care to repeat. Can you imagine the shock and anguish I felt at their betrayal?
‘Ah, if only back then I had not trusted comrades, and had taken the money alone and fled...’ English asks if you can imagine his shock at the betrayal; Japanese wishes he had stolen the money alone and fled.
Would that I had had the strength to force the truth out of those traitors!
Would that I had had the courage to escape my dungeon cell, even if it meant taking some hapless guard's life!
Driven by vengeance and no small amount of self-loathing, I resolved to forge my courage anew.
I strode into the lairs of ravenous fiends while drenched in blood! I put their helpless offspring to the spear, that I might face the unbridled fury of their kin!
‘I goaded the most dangerous monsters of Eorzea into a white-hot rage, always in search of worthy fights!’ English says he killed the beasts' helpless young; German says he provoked the most dangerous monsters to fury.
For my efforts I have acquired the ultimate courage─a courage forged amidst danger and tempered by rage!
I fear nothing! I am the greatest lancer that has ever lived!
Report to Ywain
.
By your return, I take it you are ready for the final trial. Very well, let us─
You are wounded! What has happened!?
No. Not him. Not Foulques...
Be strong, man!
I am sorry, [name]─the trial must wait.
‘[name], I knew this moment would come.’ English says the trial must wait; German says he knew this moment would come.
‘And now, that time has come.’ English says the trial must wait; Japanese says the time for the trial has now come.
Pray make haste to the Central Shroud and help your comrades. And [name]─should Foulques force your hand...do what must be done. Twelve speed you on your way.
- FR Montre-lui ce qu'est le vrai courage ! ‘Show him what true courage is!’ English wishes you the Twelve's speed; French tells you to show Foulques what true courage is.
‘Save your brethren, and defeat the lancer Foulques.’ English reluctantly allows force only if Foulques forces it; Japanese plainly orders you to defeat him.
‘Prove your "courage"!’ English wishes you the Twelve's speed; Japanese tells you to prove your courage.
We were attacked, sir...by a Duskwight lancer...as we trained in the forest.
He was... He was impossibly strong...a demon... He kept screaming something about...teaching us true courage.
We were...in the northwest corner of the Central Shroud...when it happened. I was able to get away...but the others... You must help the others!
Arrrgh...
Help! For the love of the Twelve, help me!
I owe you my life, friend. Another breath and I would have become wurm fodder.
A Duskwight lancer unleashed the fiends upon us, claiming it would temper our courage! You should have seen the look in his eye when he said it─mad bastard!
Hm? Where is he now? Uh...I think he headed off towards the North Shroud, maybe in the direction of Fallgourd Float...? I can't say for sure─I was concentrating on the scalekin at the time.
If it's a reckoning you seek, you are like to be disappointed. Those of us who managed to outrun the wurms will already have alerted the Wailers.
I daresay the Duskwight is being held at spearpoint as we speak, begging for his worthless life in a puddle of his own piss. Serves the bastard right, and all!
So Foulques is no more...
‘It seems you have accomplished the trial.’ English remarks that Foulques is no more; Japanese says you have accomplished the trial.
His was a tragic tale...and one that might have been so different. Had fate not dealt him such a cruel hand, he could well have commanded a place of honor within these halls.
‘[name], you have triumphed over the mad Foulques with self-control and determination.’ English mourns Foulques' tragic tale; German praises your victory over the mad Foulques.
‘[name]. I have clearly seen your strength, you who struck down the lancer brandishing reckless bravado with the art of courage.’ English mourns Foulques' tragic tale; Japanese praises your defeat of the recklessly brave lancer.
But it avails us naught to dwell upon what might have been. It is enough that you are still with us, [name].
Lest you wonder about your final trial...there will be none─I have seen all I need to see. You have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that yours is a genuine courage.
In recognition of this, I shall pass to you the secrets of Lance Charge, one of the most potent abilities in our arsenal.
You are a lancer in your own right now─there is naught more I can teach you. From here onwards, it is up to you to seek out such challenges as will make you grow.
Like attracts like, and the strong are drawn to strength. Just as I once knew for a certainty that I was destined to face the Lord of the Bramble Patch, so too will you find─or be found by─an adversary of equal worth.
None can say what fate will bring, but armed with your courage, there is naught you need fear. Keep close to your heart the lessons you have learned here, and go forth to blaze a new trail with spear in hand.
Foulques
...I-Impossible!
M-My courage is absolute!
Nooo! Come no closer!
