Steps

  1. Speak with V'mellpa.
  2. Speak with the seasoned adventurer at the Hall of the Novice.
  3. Speak with the Yellowjacket at the entrance to Sastasha.
  4. Enter Sastasha.
  5. Speak with Baderon at the Drowning Wench.
Journal
  1. Baderon, the proprietor of the Drowning Wench, has need of a capable adventurer.
  2. Baderon and Commodore Reyner have requested your assistance with an investigation. A strange ship has been sighted off the coast of Aleport, and the subsequent appearance of a dangerous-looking group of men at the Sastasha Seagrot has the Yellowjackets greatly concerned. Speak with V'mellpa at the ferry docks on the lower decks, and receive directions to the location of the caves.
  3. V'mellpa has suggested that you pay a visit to the Hall of the Novice before continuing your journey to Sastasha. Make your way to the Adventurers' Guild building located north of Aleport, and speak with the seasoned adventurer.
  4. You have concluded your educational visit to the Hall of the Novice. Continue on to the north, and speak with the Yellowjacket stationed outside the entrance to Sastasha.
  5. The Yellowjackets are concerned that the unsavory-looking men seen entering Sastasha may belong to the Serpent Reavers, the pirate allies of the Sahagin. Search the caves and ascertain whether or not such suspicions are well founded. ※Challenge Sastasha with other players via the Duty Finder, or with a party of NPCs via Duty Support. Both systems are accessible from the main menu as well as the dungeon's entrance point.
  6. You have discovered a pirate den in the depths of Sastasha. Just as the Yellowjackets feared, it would appear the Serpent Reavers and their Sahagin masters are using the caves as a base for their nefarious operations. Return to Limsa Lominsa without delay, and report your findings to Baderon at the Drowning Wench.
  7. Having listened to your findings, Baderon expresses his satisfaction with your work, and mentions another task which might be of interest to you. It seems the Adventurers' Guild in Gridania wishes to employ the services of a seasoned adventurer. Prepare your gear, then speak with Baderon when you are ready to embark on the next stage of your journey.
Hidden
Lore Denn the Orcatoothed talks about the 'Lord of the Whorl'. This is Leviathan, the Sahagin's primal god. The Serpent Reavers are sworn to this god, as Merlwyb explained in step 21.
Lore Rumor says that about fifty years ago, the pirate king Mistbeard drove the Sahagin out of these caves. The rumor also says Mistbeard then built docks, crew quarters and a tavern.
Lore Reyner talks about a 'family of coeurls'. In Sastasha you really do meet a coeurl. It is Chopper, a level 15 beastkin and one of the dungeon's bosses.
Lore Many tales say that the Seagrot is a den of deadly coeurls. But it has become clear that the tales were a trick. The Serpent Reavers used them to keep people away.
Spoiler about later in the story

Foreshadowing At the optional Hall of the Novice, watch Avere make fun of Edda's healing. The story of this arguing party goes on at steps 26 and 28. It also goes on past the end of this chart.

Spoiler about later in the story

Foreshadowing Pirate captain Madison comes back as a boss of Sastasha (Hard). This is a level 50 dungeon added in patch 2.4. Karlabos and the Kraken are bosses there too.

Patch change Before patch 3.2 added the Hall of the Novice, V'mellpa had different lines in this quest. Her lines were changed to fit the new stop.
Characters 14
  • Baderon

Baderon, who runs the Drowning Wench, needs a trustworthy adventurer to find out who is sneaking in and out of the Sastasha Seagrot.

What you know from earlier quests 17
    • #1 Coming to Limsa Lominsa: Baderon registers you at the Adventurers' Guild. He says the Calamity, a disaster, blurred everyone's memories, even of the heroes called Warriors of Light. He shields you from a suspicious Yellowjacket. He is the only son of Lodewicus, the guild's founder, and left home young.
    • #10 Close to Home: Baderon sends you to touch the aetheryte, a travel crystal, to see Swozblaet with an old octant, and to visit the Arcanists' Guild. He blames the Calamity, or the ale, for his poor memory. He urges you to help people in need.
    • #11 Glory Days: Baderon laughs at the gift: he has hated aurelia umbrellas since his days as a sellsword, a fighter for hire, when even salt and a campfire did not help. Few sellswords keep all their fingers, so he earned the respected nickname "Tenfingers".
    • #15 The Rats in the Wharf: Baderon pays you from a huge sack left by a stranger, who said the rats' scurrying noise was driving him mad. Baderon thinks the man was already a bit unwell in the head and doubts he can ever find peace.
    • #19 On to Summerford: Staelwyrn, the farm's owner, is Baderon's old mate. He runs it with mostly reformed pirates, trying to bring life back to soil the Calamity ruined. Baderon gave you a glowing recommendation and tells you to work hard and impress 'the old bastard'.
    • #22 Fool Me Once: Ancreta says the Yellowjackets hire adventurers only through the Adventurers' Guild. The panel notes add that this means Baderon: official work for adventurers in Limsa goes through him.
    • #27 Bait and Swat: Baderon calls the pact a farce that only bought Limsa time. He is sure the kobolds hoard crystals to summon their god, Titan. With no Company of Heroes to save them this time, he offers to ask the Yellowjackets to guard the Stead.
    • #43 A Pound of Cure: Baderon has an Eorzean version of this quest's proverb about prevention and cure, using 'onze' and 'ponze', Eorzea's words for ounce and pound.
    • #47 Just Deserts: Baderon promises fair treatment for Sevrin; a Yellowjacket who hands out punishments is his friend. He gives you free room and board at the Wench and signs you up for leves (paid odd jobs) with T'mokkri. He suspects some pirates of the kidnappings.
    • #48 Sky-high: Baderon points you to the Skylift in middle La Noscea, a big scaffold on the cliff called the Descent, used to haul cargo. He hears the workers need help with odd jobs, and sends you to its head, Wyrkrhit.
    • #68 Men of the Blue Tattoos: Ahtbyrm told Baderon the whole tale, and he thanks you. He jokes that the only man who can read the script is Baderon himself. He calls you one of his regulars and trusts you. What he reads tells him trouble is brewing.
    • #69 Feint and Strike: Baderon was once a sellsword, a fighter for hire, and learned to read the script of the Sahagin, the "fishbacks," from orders taken off dead foes. He sees the Victory attack was a decoy, guesses Swiftperch is the real target, and sends you to Reyner.
    • #70 High Society: Baderon nearly snorts ale at the news of your rise. He says the Bismarck, a fine restaurant, caters the banquet, and sends you to J'nasshym for clothes. The box holds dress shoes: a gift from him and everyone you have helped.
    • #71 A Mizzenmast Repast: Baderon tells you to wear the shoes and hold your head high. He described you to Zanthael only by your shoes. When you collapse at the banquet, he drags you back to the Wench, blames too much cake, and says the Admiral wants a word.
    • #73 The Lominsan Envoy: Baderon is stunned and proud that you are the Admiral's personal envoy. He describes the grim forest folk of Gridania and the crafty merchants of Ul'dah, warns of intrigue, beastmen and their primals, and wishes you good fortune as you board the airship.
    • #79 Call of the Sea: Baderon greets you loudly by name, pleased the adventurer is you. He confirms the job but warns it is dangerous and not for the faint of heart. If you still want it, he offers to explain the details.
    • #92 Rising to the Challenge: I'tolwann mentions him: the last time she gave a customer a free drink, Baderon docked her wages.
  • Yellowjacket

This Yellowjacket scout keeps watch at the mouth of the Sastasha Seagrot and is tired of waiting.

  • Reyner Hansred

Commodore Reyner, chief of the Yellowjackets, comes to the Drowning Wench with news for the investigation.

What you know from earlier quests 4
    • #67 Victory in Peril: Ghimthota mentions him at the end: the captured pirates go to the Yellowjackets, and "Reyner's men" now take over the investigation. So Reyner commands men of the Yellowjackets.
    • #69 Feint and Strike: Reyner trusts Baderon, who is "rarely wrong," but a Sahagin attack on South Tidegate takes his troops. He sends you to Swiftperch instead, wishing the Warriors of Light still walked among them. Afterward he praises you warmly and presents Admiral Merlwyb.
    • #70 High Society: Reyner says few get this honor, not even the Admiral's officers, but you earned it. He sends you to Baderon for proper clothes. He was never a pirate; he began as an officer under his teacher, Commodore Sthalmann. He cares for an old cat.
    • #89 I Hereby Relieve You: Falkbryda reads his dispatch. He has hired an adventurer "of excellent repute and pleasing manner" to finish the Seagrot work, and that adventurer is you. Like Falkbryda, he feels their forces are spread too thin.
  • V'mellpa

V'mellpa works at the ferry docks on the lower decks. Commodore Reyner sends you to her for directions.

  • Seasoned Adventurer

This seasoned adventurer works at the Hall of the Novice, north of Aleport, and has heard you are going to Sastasha.

  • Liavinne

Liavinne is a member of a new adventuring party, waiting at the Hall of the Novice.

  • Paiyo Reiyo

Paiyo Reiyo is a member of the same new party, on its very first outing.

  • Edda

Edda is the healer of a new adventuring party at the Hall of the Novice, sent out to buy supplies.

  • Isildaure

Isildaure is an old adventurer resting outside Sastasha.

  • Alianne

Alianne is a traveler resting with an old adventurer outside Sastasha.

  • Dolorous Bear

Dolorous Bear is an adventurer at the Drowning Wench, asking Baderon about the Sastasha job.

  • E'manafa

E'manafa is a member of Dolorous Bear's party at the Drowning Wench.

  • Kikina

Kikina is a member of Dolorous Bear's party at the Drowning Wench.

  • Merlwyb

What you know from earlier quests 7
    • #6 Edelweiss, Edelweiss: The Encyclopaedia Eorzea says Admiral Merlwyb gave an order that banned piracy. After that order, a group called the Upright Thieves became the Rogues' Guild.
    • #10 Close to Home: Murie says Admiral Merlwyb keeps several arcanists on her personal staff. Fearing their art would die out, as it passed only from master to chosen student, she ordered an official Arcanists' Guild and paid for research and training.
    • #19 On to Summerford: Staelwyrn took Admiral Merlwyb's offer to put pirates stuck on land to work in the fields. The panel notes add that Summerford is part of Merlwyb's plan to end piracy by giving former pirates land to work.
    • #69 Feint and Strike: Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn, Admiral of Limsa Lominsa, thanks you at the Coral Tower. You seem familiar to her. She calls Baderon a good friend and invites you to a banquet as guest of honor. Her names mean "Sea Woman" and "Blue Fish's daughter" in Roegadyn.
    • #70 High Society: Merlwyb does not appear. Reyner says it is very rare for the Admiral to invite an adventurer to a state banquet. Baderon teases you as "Merlwyb's guest of honor."
    • #71 A Mizzenmast Repast: Merlwyb tells of the lost Warriors of Light. She sees you as chosen by the Mothercrystal, the being in your vision, and has a task for you. Her father Bloefhis worked with the Sahagin; she challenged him to a duel and came back alone.
    • #73 The Lominsan Envoy: Merlwyb proposes memorial services in each city-state on the fifth anniversary of the Battle of Carteneau. She makes you her personal envoy to Gridania and Ul'dah and gives you an airship pass. She says you have a quality that recalls history's champions.
What happens in this quest spoilers for this quest
  • Baderon: He says people are jumpy since the Sahagin's pirate allies paid a visit. He teases Commodore Reyner. When you report the Sahagin hideout, he is shocked, thanks you on behalf of Limsa, and offers a new job from the sister guild in Gridania.
  • Yellowjacket: This scout says a ship was seen near the Isles of Umbra, and rough men near the cave. He fears they are Serpent Reavers, pirates who serve the Sahagin, marked by blue face tattoos. People still remember the kidnappings. He asks you to find out.
  • Reyner Hansred: He reports a strange ship seen near the Isles of Umbra. His patrol found only a family of coeurls (wild beasts) in Sastasha, but he wants it searched again. With the Sahagin testing his defenses daily, he cannot spare men, so he asks you.
  • V'mellpa: She tells you to take a ferry to Aleport, then visit the Hall of the Novice, where the Adventurers' Guild trains newcomers, before entering Sastasha. She warns you to expect pirates. A chart note says her lines changed when the Hall was added.
  • Seasoned Adventurer: This adventurer warns that the cave's dwellers are many and bloodthirsty, so going alone is foolish. You need companions and group-combat training. The Smith there sets the training, and the Yellowjacket scout at the cave has your orders.
  • Liavinne laughs at Edda for being late, saying Edda would lose a footrace to a tree slug.
  • Paiyo Reiyo thinks searching the Sastasha caves is easy, just turning over a few rocks. To Paiyo Reiyo, this first job from the Adventurers' Guild looks like a simple road to fame and fortune.
  • Edda comes back late with only two potions, shocked at how much they cost. Avere scolds Edda for being slow and for barely healing a scratch. Edda apologizes, saying "I came as fast as I could!"
  • Isildaure: He has adventured for more seasons than he can count and is still amazed by the realm's beauty. He says a thirst for the unknown, not riches or fame, drives adventurers. Alianne, who calls him Grandfather, travels with him.
  • Alianne calls Isildaure Grandfather and says they go wherever the wind takes them, for the joy of freedom. The years are wearing on him, Alianne notes, but only death could end his hunger for adventure.
  • Dolorous Bear learns you already did the job and admits the party waited too long. Their goal: heroic deeds sung in every alehouse in Eorzea. Dolorous Bear urges you to have a goal too, calling goals "arms and armor for the spirit."
  • E'manafa: When the Sastasha job is already taken, E'manafa stays calm and tells the group it does not matter, since the wheel turns.
  • Kikina cheers on Dolorous Bear as "great leader" and promises not a wink of sleep until they reach their goal.
What the Japanese, French and German versions say 13

Japanese

EN 'I've yet to see them for myself, but if this lot belongs to those fishback-fancying Serpent Reavers...'

JA 『不審な風体の男たちが、蛮族サハギン族に加担する海賊団、「海蛇の舌」の者であったとすれば……』, 'If those suspicious-looking men belong to the Sea Serpent's Tongue, the pirate crew that sides with the beastman Sahagin...'

They are the Sahagin's pirate allies. The English name keeps the serpent but drops the tongue.

EN 'Over the course of the past moon, there have been several sightings of an unfamiliar vessel off the coast of Aleport, in the vicinity of the Isles of Umbra.'

, 'Lately a suspicious ship has been sighted around the Phantom Isles, in the waters off Aleport.'

The English umbra means shadow.

Name origin

EN 'I assume you already know about the ship seen slipping around the Isles of Umbra?'

, 'Lately a suspicious ship has been seen around the Phantom Isles off Aleport.'

You probably know already that an unknown ship was sighted near the Phantom Isles.'

FR «On a repéré des bateaux inconnus près des îles d'Ombra, vers Port-aux-Ales.», 'Unknown boats have been spotted near the Isles of Ombra, out by Aleport.'

Their names are Die Phantominseln and Îles d'Ombra. German keeps the Japanese phantoms. French keeps the Latin umbra, 'shadow', like the English.

EN 'I-I'm sorry, Avere! I came as fast as I could!'

, 'S-sorry, Ave... Leader! I ran here, you know.'

Edda starts to say Avere's name, then switches to what the party calls him. The slip fits the later reveal that she and Avere are to marry.

French

Speech style

EN 'You're here about Commodore Reyner's investigation?' · 'No matter what they've told you, be ready for pirates.'

FR «Ah, c'est vous que le capitaine Hansred envoie, pas vrrrai ?», 'Ah, so you're the one Captain Hansred sent, rrright?' · «Vous savez, ces intrrrus, je me demande si ce ne seraient pas des pirates.», 'You know, these intrrruders, I wonder if they might be pirates.'

V'mellpa rolls her r's on the page. The French gives this rolling r to some Miqo'te. The English has no rolled r.

Name

EN Reyner · 'To what do I owe this rare honor, Commodore Reyner?'

FR «Reyner Hansred», that is, his full name with a surname · «Ah, Capitaine Hansred !», 'Ah, Captain Hansred!'

Unlike the English, the French gives the Yellowjackets' chief a surname. Baderon uses it.

Speech style

EN 'How difficult could it possibly be?' · 'I never expected our first visit to the Adventurers' Guild would yield such a straightforward way to win fame and fortune.'

A simple cave check, easy-peasy for a group like ours!' · «Choper une mission aussi facile dès notre arrivée à la guilde des aventuriers, quel coup de bol !», 'Snagging a job this easy the minute we reach the adventurers' guild — what a lucky break!'

Paiyo Reiyo talks slang. The English speaks in polished sentences.

Nuance

EN 'I-I'm sorry, Avere!'

FR «Désolée, Ave... euh... je veux dire, Chef !», 'Sorry, Ave... uh... I mean, Boss!'

Here too Edda catches herself. It sounds as if the bullying Avere insists on being called that.

German

Wordplay

EN 'Baderon, the proprietor of the Drowning Wench, has need of a capable adventurer.'

DE «Baderon, Wirt der Hafenbar „Zur Ertränkten Sorge“, sieht besorgt aus.», 'Baderon, landlord of the Drowned Worry, the harbour bar, looks worried.'

Baderon runs a tavern that drowns worry, yet he is full of it himself.

Different

EN 'Head inside and one of their seasoned adventurers will take you in hand.'

DE „Hör ihr gut zu, denn sie weiß, wovon sie spricht: Sie hat schon so manchem Piraten das Holzbein gestutzt.“, 'Listen to her carefully, because she knows what she's talking about: she's cut many a pirate's peg leg down to size.'

V'mellpa jokes about the veteran at the Hall of the Novice. In other words, she has beaten many pirates.

Different

EN 'The Smith here oversees the training schedules.'

It only rarely happens that a novice dies in the arena.'

The veteran means to calm you, but admits that novices do die now and then. The English only talks about training.

Different

EN 'Anyroad, all's well that ends well!'

DE „Das muss Admiral Merlwyb gleich wissen.“, 'Admiral Merlwyb needs to hear about this right away.'

Baderon says this when he hears of the Sahagin den. The English never mentions her.

Different

EN 'Grandfather and I are companions on the road.'

I are old travelling companions.'

Alianne drops the family tie here. In English and French, Isildaure is her grandfather.

Accepting the quest

Baderon

I thank ye fer takin' the time to 'elp me out. Now, I'm sure yer busy, so I'll come straight to the point.

Word 'as it some suspicious-lookin' buggers 'ave been sneakin' in an' out o' the Sastasha Seagrot, an' I need a trustworthy sort to 'ead up north of Aleport an' find out who they are an' what they're up to.

‘The Yellowjackets are already on alert, but their commander, Commander Reyner, has asked the Adventurers' Guild for support.’ English: the speaker needs a trustworthy sort to go north; German: Commander Reyner asked the Adventurers' Guild for help.

Don't sound like much, I know...

But since that nasty business over in Swiftperch, folk've been a bit uneasy. Well, I say “a bit”... 'Tis all they can do not to soil 'emselves every time the bloody floorboards creak.

But it weren't so long ago as the fishbacks' pet pirates paid us an unwelcome visit, an' folk are feelin' a bit nervous.

Reyner

If you would permit me, Master Baderon, I should be happy to elaborate.

Baderon

Well, well, if it ain't the chief Yellowjacket 'imself. To what do I owe this rare honor, Commodore Reyner? Come to make sure me patrons are behavin'─or just thirsty?

‘Hey there, Master Reyner Hansred.’ Japanese gives his full name, Reyner Hansred, without the rank; English says Commodore Reyner.

Reyner

Neither, in fact. I came to welcome [name] back to Limsa Lominsa. It is well you have returned.

Neither, in fact. I was informed that you had requested an adventurer to assist in my investigation, and I came to offer what information I could sift from recent reports.

Over the course of the past moon, there have been several sightings of an unfamiliar vessel off the coast of Aleport, in the vicinity of the Isles of Umbra.

‘We have been told that intruders have been spotted around Aleport.’ English reports sightings of an unfamiliar vessel; French reports intruders spotted near Aleport.

This information came to my attention no more than a few weeks after a squad of my own soldiers had completed a routine patrol of the region, the Sastasha Seagrot included.

‘It's not long at all since I sent a patrol to the cave to search for Sahagin hideouts.’ English calls it a routine patrol of the region; German says the patrol went looking for Sahagin hideouts.
‘In fact, just the other day, partly as that very investigation, Limsa Lominsa's guard, the Yellowjackets, surveyed this cave.’ English calls it a routine patrol before the news came; Japanese says the survey also served that investigation.

Their search revealed little, save that a family of coeurls had taken up residence in the caves. Nothing to concern us, in short.

‘At that time, we had only confirmed that ferocious monsters, coeurls, had settled there...’ English mentions a family of coeurls, nothing to worry about; Japanese calls them ferocious monsters.

In light of recent developments, however, it would seem wise to search Sastasha again.

But with the Sahagin testing our defenses daily, I am loath to assign the task to the limited forces at my disposal. Our line is stretched as it is.

Thus I sought the services of a competent adventurer to conduct an investigation in our stead. Any aid you can offer in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Then it is settled.

Sastasha is located in western La Noscea. For more detailed instructions on how to reach the place, I suggest you consult V'mellpa. She can be found at the ferry docks on the lower decks.

Baderon

You 'eard the man! Good luck to ye, lass/lad!

At the Ferry Docks

V'mellpa

You're here about Commodore Reyner's investigation? Then you'll want to board a ferry bound for Aleport.

Once you arrive in western La Noscea, though, you'd best pay a visit to the Hall of the Novice before you blunder into Sastasha.

The Adventurers' Guild runs the Hall, and the folk there will prepare you─train you with the skills you'll need to face the dangers undoubtedly waiting for you in the Seagrot.

The Hall is on the way to Sastasha, just north of Aleport. Head inside and one of their seasoned adventurers will take you in hand. Best of luck to you, friend!

‘Listen to her carefully, because she knows what she's talking about: she's cut many a pirate's peg leg down to size.’ V'mellpa jokes about the veteran at the Hall of the Novice. In other words, she has beaten many pirates.

No matter what they've told you, be ready for pirates. There's never any shortage of the bastards. This is Limsa Lominsa we're talking about...

‘Perhaps they may be pirates...’ Japanese only suggests, politely, that they may be pirates; English is certain and curses them.

At the Hall of the Novice

Seasoned Adventurer

Ah, you must be the adventurer of whom the Yellowjackets sent word. I hear you are to brave the depths of the Sastasha Seagrot.

‘V'mellpa contacted me and announced your arrival.’ English says the Yellowjackets sent word of you; German says V'mellpa announced your arrival.

The occupants of those caves are rumored to be as numerous as they are bloodthirsty. No matter what the epic tales would have you believe, strolling into such a den of savagery alone would be the height of foolishness. No, you shall need companions.

‘I know the Sastasha cave inside and out, and I can tell you that the slippery stones are not the only danger.’ English cites rumors of many bloodthirsty occupants; German's speaker knows the cave and warns about slippery stones.

And you shall need the training we here at the Hall of the Novice can provide! I strongly suggest that you study the fundamentals of group combat before continuing on your mission.

The Smith here oversees the training schedules. Speak with him, and you can register for exercises tailored to your particular field of expertise.

‘He is our head instructor, and his role is to introduce adventurers to the various training programmes that will help them progress.’ English names him The Smith; French only calls him their head instructor.

When you have mastered all that our masters have to teach, then it will be time to head north once more. Report to the Yellowjacket scout at the mouth of the Sastasha Seagrot, and he will furnish you with the details of your duty.

Edda's Group

Avere

What took ye so bloody long, Edda? If me purse was too light, ye might've considered usin' some of yer own bleedin' coin to get us what we need!

‘Did you treat yourself to a good time with our hard-earned gil, instead of getting the potions?’ English tells Edda to use her own coin if the purse was light; German accuses her of spending their gil on fun.

Ye've only ever been as useful as the contents o' yer pockets─the gods know ye can barely 'eal a scratch!

‘That was the only job you had!’ English says she is only as useful as her money; French says this was her only task.

We took up the 'venturin' life to take on the big jobs an' claim the big rewards. How're we meant to do that if ye can't even get our supplies in order?

‘We're not here to drink tea, got it?’ English complains she can't keep their supplies in order; French says they are not there to sit drinking tea.
‘We can't be taking it easy over a little pile like this.’ English complains she can't keep their supplies in order; Japanese says they can't dawdle over such a small job.

Hm? It's 'er/'im─the one Baderon was talkin' to!

  • FR Qu'est-ce que tu fais là, toi ? ‘What are you doing here, you?’ English has the speaker recognize you as the one Baderon was talking to; French just asks what you are doing there.
‘Are you here to explore the cave too?!’ English has the speaker recognize you as the one Baderon was talking to; German asks if you came to explore too.
‘You too... are an adventurer...?’ English has the speaker recognize you as the one Baderon was talking to; Japanese only realizes you are an adventurer too.

Well, we'll see who gets the glory! This job should've been ours in the first place!

‘We were here first, so you can go home!’ English says the job should have been theirs; French says they got there first, so you can go home.
  • DE Das ist unsere Höhle! Verzieh dich! ‘Forget it! This is our cave! Get lost!’ English says the job should have been theirs; German claims the cave as theirs and tells you to get lost.

Liavinne

Bwahahaha! Edda, you're so slow, you'd lose a footrace to a tree slug.

  • FR Que t'es bête, Edda ! ‘You're so stupid, Edda!’ English jokes Edda would lose a footrace to a tree slug; French just calls her stupid.
‘Edda is as slow as ever!’ English jokes Edda would lose a footrace to a tree slug; Japanese just says she is slow as ever.

Paiyo Reiyo

This is perfect for our inaugural outing as a party─wandering around in the caves, turning over a few rocks... How difficult could it possibly be?

‘A simple cave check, easy-peasy for a group like ours!’ Paiyo Reiyo talks slang. The English speaks in polished sentences.

I never expected our first visit to the Adventurers' Guild would yield such a straightforward way to win fame and fortune.

‘Snagging a job this easy the minute we reach the adventurers' guild — what a lucky break!’

Edda

I-I'm sorry, Avere! I came as fast as I could!

‘S-sorry, Ave... Leader! I ran here, you know.’ Edda starts to say Avere's name, then switches to what the party calls him. The slip fits the later reveal that she and Avere are to marry.
  • FR Désolée, Ave... euh... je veux dire, Chef ! ‘Sorry, Ave... uh... I mean, Boss!’ Here too Edda catches herself. It sounds as if the bullying Avere insists on being called that.

I tried haggling with the merchant, but two potions was the best I could get with the money you gave me. I had no idea how expensive they were!

  • DE Der alte Knauser! ‘The old skinflint!’ English has the speaker surprised at how expensive potions are; German has her call the merchant an old skinflint.

Outside of Sastasha

Isildaure

Ah, a fellow adventurer. You, too, are here to unravel the mysteries of Sastasha?

I have adventured across this wide realm for more seasons than I dare to count, yet still Eorzea manages to surprise me with her beauty and splendor.

Our journeys are not ended by the attainment of riches or fame. It is an unquenchable thirst for the unknown that drives us into the wilds time and again.

Even if I explored the world for a thousand years, I would never grow weary of this life.

Alianne

Grandfather and I are companions on the road.

  • DE Isildaure und ich sind alte Weggefährten. ‘Isildaure and I are old travelling companions.’ Alianne drops the family tie here. In English and French, Isildaure is her grandfather.

We travel where the wind takes us, and drink in all the wonders this world has to offer.

Only an adventurer can understand the joy of such freedom─of discovering hidden places and experiencing sights and sounds that few may ever know.

The passing years have begun to take their toll on the old man, but no force save death itself will sate his appetite for adventure!

Talking to the Yellowjacket

Yellowjacket

Please tell me you're here on Yellowjacket duty, and not some daft sod out for a stroll. I can't take any more of this blasted waiting. You are? Thank the gods.

‘Is it you, the adventurer sent by Baderon?’ French guard calmly asks if Baderon sent the player; English grumbles about daft strollers and the blasted waiting.
‘So you are the adventurer who took the investigation request from Baderon.’ Japanese guard formally confirms Baderon sent the player; English grumbles about daft strollers and the blasted waiting.

I assume you already know about the ship seen slipping around the Isles of Umbra?

  • FR On a repéré des bateaux inconnus près des îles d'Ombra, vers Port-aux-Ales. ‘Unknown boats have been spotted near the Isles of Ombra, out by Aleport.’

We've been on the lookout for pirate activity ever since that vessel was sighted, thinking a crew of cutthroats might have a den nearby.

So when we received word that men of questionable quality had been seen passing in and out of Sastasha here, we weren't entirely surprised.

When your skills have been honed and your mind sharpened, continue onwards to the north. The Yellowjacket scout stationed before the Sastasha Seagrot will have the details of your mission.

Yellowjacket

I've yet to see them for myself, but if this lot belongs to those fishback-fancying Serpent Reavers...

‘We have good reason to think they are Serpent Reavers in league with the Sahagin.’ French guard asserts a well-founded suspicion; English guard admits he hasn't seen them and only supposes.

Well, you can imagine the panic it'll cause. The kidnappings are still fresh in people's minds.

‘The locals are already worried because of the recent problems, so we'd like to settle this quickly and without making waves.’ English names the kidnappings; French only speaks of recent problems.
‘Their last raid still sits deep in people's bones.’ English names the kidnappings; German speaks of their last raid.
‘It will cause further chaos among residents already on edge from the recent commotion.’ English names the kidnappings; Japanese only speaks of the recent commotion.

Anyway, your task is to poke around in the caves, and find out exactly who we're dealing with. While you do that, I'll be keeping watch out here...praying you don't spot any blue face tattoos.

‘I pray for you that our suspicion turns out to be unfounded.’ English hopes you spot no blue face tattoos; German hopes their suspicion proves unfounded.

The fishbacks and their Serpent Reaver lackeys cannot be allowed to establish a permanent base in these lands.

You must uncover the truth behind who or what is lurking in these caves, adventurer. The peace of western La Noscea may depend on it!

Finishing the quest

Baderon

Aye, such a task was on the books. “Was,” mind. I'm afraid that ship 'as already sailed, friend.

Dolorous Bear

Ah. Might you be the adventurer who accepted the job of investigating Sastasha?

‘Ah, are you perhaps the adventurer who snatched the job from right under our nose?!’ English asks if you accepted the Sastasha job; German asks if you snatched it from under their nose.

Hmph. It would seem that ship has not only sailed, but now returns to harbor, none the worse for its voyage. A pity. We dragged our boots too long on this one.

‘No need to ask you whether you succeeded...’ English extends the sailed-ship joke: the ship returned safe; French just says you clearly succeeded.
  • JA …… ‘...By the look of you, it seems it was solved safely.’ English extends the sailed-ship joke: the ship returned safe; Japanese just says you clearly solved it.
‘Too bad for us, you have cut the grass from under our feet, from what I see.’ French uses the idiom “cut the grass from under our feet”; English extends Baderon's image of the sailed ship.

E'manafa

No matter. The wheel will turn and our chance will come.

Dolorous Bear

You are right, of course. But there shall be no rest till we have attained our goal, lofty though it may be!

Kikina

Not a wink of sleep, great leader!

  • FR Bien parlé ! ‘Well said!’ French Kikina simply approves; English jokes that there will be not a wink of sleep.
  • DE Ja, genau, ich will endlich groß rauskommen! ‘Yes, exactly, I want to make it big at last!’ German Kikina says she wants to make it big; English jokes about not a wink of sleep.
‘That's just what I want!’ Japanese Kikina says she welcomes it; English jokes about not a wink of sleep, calling him great leader.

Dolorous Bear

Our aim, lest you wonder, is to perform such feats of heroism as will earn us a place in the songs of every alehouse in Eorzea. We mean to write a legend which will inspire adventurers as yet unborn to follow our shining example.

Do you have such a goal? Large or small, it matters not. Only have a star to reach for and you will reach higher.

Purpose can sustain you through times of hardship. Keep your eye on the prize, and all obstacles will be overcome in time.

You would not think to stride into battle unclad, would you? Well, goals are as arms and armor for the spirit! I wish you fortune in your endeavors, milady/sir!

‘And then, it also helps one become psychologically stronger.’ French says plainly that goals make you mentally stronger; English's image of arms and armour is absent.

Baderon

Back then, are ye? With all yer limbs, an' a tale to tell, I'll wager.

Fishbacks? An' there I was thinkin' ye'd only 'ave to crack a pirate skull or three. Seven hells... Ye turn yer back fer five bloody minutes, an' the scaly bastards've set up shop on yer bleedin' doorstep...

Still, sounds like ye left 'em in pieces, so I don't s'pose they'll be carryin' out whatever mischief they was plannin'─unless they was plannin' on feedin' 'emselves to the fauna o' Sastasha, o' course. Anyroad, all's well that ends well!

‘But I still wonder what they were cooking up...’ English closes cheerfully that all's well that ends well; French still wonders what they were plotting.

Thanks fer sheddin' some light on this mystery. I knew ye'd get the job done, lass/lad─ye always do!

On behalf o' Limsa, I thank ye fer sheddin' some light on this mystery. Ye've lived up to yer reputation, an' I couldn't ask fer no more'n that.

Now, I'll bet yer dyin' fer a rest, but just in case yer not, I was wonderin' if ye might be interested in takin' on another job? It just so 'appens that I've 'ad a request from our sister guild in Gridania, see.

Seems the forest folk're in need of a 'venturer what can get things done.

Fer them to ask fer 'elp like this, ye can bet the task won't be no skip through a sunny glade. But after the way ye dealt with our fishback infestation, I doubt it's anythin' ye can't 'andle.

Give us a shout when yer ready, an' I'll lay it out fer ye.
