  1. Ywain seeks your aid in assisting an old friend.
  2. An Ishgardian friend of Ywain's requires aid, and the guildmaster would have you provide it. Make your way to the Observatorium and seek out the man, a knight by the name of Ser Alberic.
  3. Ser Alberic has enlisted your aid in tracking down the Eye, a priceless Ishgardian relic that has been spirited away by a rogue dragoon named Estinien. Consult with Logedanrel for insight as to where the fugitive may have traveled.
  4. Logedanrel suggests that you speak to the sentry Idristan at Florentel's Spire and inquire as to whether he has seen a man matching Estinien's description.
  5. Idristan of Florentel's Spire insists that no dragoon in black armor has crossed the border. Return to Logedanrel and inform him that your trip was unfruitful.
  6. Logedanrel suspects that the fugitive might still be in hiding within Ishgardian borders. Search the cavern east of the Observatorium for signs of a visitor.
  7. Upon searching the campfire, you were ambushed by a dragoon clad in black steel. Return to Ser Alberic and tell him of your encounter.
  8. Upon hearing of your encounter, Ser Alberic confesses to you the truth. The dragoon you encountered was indeed Estinien, who is no ordinary thief, but rather the Azure Dragoon─the chosen one─and a former pupil of Ser Alberic's. Convinced that you have been chosen by the Eye, Ser Alberic tasks you with retrieving the relic from Estinien. ※The next dragoon quest will be available from Alberic upon reaching level 35.
Hidden
Lore Alberic swears 'By the Fury'. The Fury is Halone, the goddess Ishgard took as its guardian. Its first settlers likely chose her because of the constant threat of dragons.
Lore Ywain speaks of Ishgard's 'ongoing conflict with the dragons'. That war has a name, the Dragonsong War, and it has gone on for about a thousand years.

Foreshadowing Remember Estinien, the dragoon in black armor who has the Eye. His parting words are 'Our paths shall cross again.'

Characters 5
  • Ywain

Ywain has a request for help from a friend in Ishgard and needs a capable lancer for the job.

What you know from earlier quests 7
    • #4 Way of the Lancer: Ywain teaches that lancers always attack and wear light armor to move fast. He values courage above all. He accepts you, sends you to kill squirrels, ladybugs and funguars, then gives you a hunting log listing creatures to train on.
    • #21 Spear of the Fearless: Ywain teaches two sides of a lancer's courage: composure, staying calm when outnumbered, and resolve, daring to attack despite fear. A mysterious lancer challenges him; he refuses to be provoked and says you are only a novice. He tells you to ignore such challengers.
    • #44 Courage of Stone: Ywain sends you for the Stone of Courage on Naked Rock. Angry that Foulques moved it, he calls that man's words vain nonsense: a lancer's courage comes from composure and resolve. He lets you join other guilds, but hopes you master the lance first.
    • #68 A Dangerous Proposition: Ywain sends you to protect a young lancer who left to duel Foulques. On your return he praises your calm courage and teaches you Piercing Talon. He fears Foulques could do great harm and wants to stop him.
    • #88 Lance of Destiny: Ywain tests you against three lancers. When Foulques vows to shut the guild, Ywain bets its fate on your lance. To him, rushing into danger is folly, not courage. He praises your calm before the Lord of the Bramble Patch.
    • #137 Questions and Lancers: Ywain laughs at Vauxclairt's demand that he visit. He is proud that all three masters approve of you. He says only one last trial remains before you are a full lancer and can leave the guild.
    • #177 Proof of Might: When wounded Edda brings news, Ywain sees that Foulques has attacked novice lancers. He sends you to help and allows force if needed. Back at the guild, he mourns Foulques's sad story, drops the trial, and teaches you Lance Charge.

What happens in this quest spoilers for this quest
  • Ywain explains that Ishgard keeps its gates closed because of its war with dragons, but still helps its allies. The task is secret and needs an adventurer, so he sends you to meet Ser Alberic at the Observatorium.
  • Alberic says the dragoon Estinien stole the Eye, a relic holding a dragon's power. He admits Estinien is the Azure Dragoon and his former pupil. Once Azure Dragoon himself, he says the Eye chose you too, and offers to train you.

Accepting the quest

Ywain

Ah, I daresay you might just be the right woman/man for the job. The guild has urgent need of a capable lancer for a mission beyond our nation's borders. Hear me out, if you will.

I've received word from an Ishgardian friend to the effect that he requires our aid. I would have you go and provide that aid.

As you may already know, due to her ongoing conflict with the dragons, Ishgard has kept her gates closed to outsiders for some time. The occasional dragoon on patrol duty is about all folk see these days.

  • FR Ses portes sont fermées aux étrangers depuis plusieurs siècles en raison du conflit qui oppose le peuple ishgardais aux dragons. ‘Its gates have been closed to outsiders for several centuries because of the conflict between the Ishgardian people and the dragons.’ English says Ishgard has been closed for some time; French says for several centuries.

In spite of her self-imposed isolation, however, the Holy See has never failed to honor her obligations to her allies.

It is only fitting that we answer the call and lend what assistance we can. To this end, we offered to dispatch a contingent of Wood Wailers with all haste─but were politely informed that they would not be welcome, much to our initial confusion.

It was later explained that we are dealing with a matter of some sensitivity, best handled by individuals who are capable and trustworthy, yet unbound by allegiance─and who fits that description save adventurers?

Secrecy being paramount, I can provide no details as to the nature of the task. All you need to know will be revealed at the rendezvous point.

Should you accept the mission, take yourself to the Observatorium. A knight by the name of Ser Alberic will receive you upon arrival.

Speak with Ser Alberic at the Observatorium.

Alberic

Ah, you must be the adventurer of whom Ywain sent word. Greetings and well met.

I am Ser Alberic Bale, knight of Ishgard. The Holy See is much obliged to you for your aid.

Time being of the essence, I shall proceed straight to the heart of the matter. The Eye, an Ishgardian relic of immeasurable worth, has been stolen, and we have reason to believe the culprit has come this way. So it is that we ask your assistance in its recovery.

The thief has been identified as a man named Estinien, a dragoon sworn to the service of the Holy See. Aye, you heard true: the crime was perpetrated by one of our own; an individual in a position of trust and no little honor... You may be assured that a fate worse than death awaits him upon capture.

My duties to the See afford me little opportunity to travel far beyond the walls of Ishgard. I must confess to a grave ignorance of recent Gridanian affairs.

I was told that a sentry by the name of Logedanrel might have knowledge of routes oft taken by Ishgardian fugitives. I would prefer to keep my identity a secret, and thus would have you gather what information you can from the man.

We must act quickly. For you see, Estinien is...

  • FR Il va sans dire que vous devez absolument garder le silence le plus complet sur cette affaire. ‘It goes without saying that you must keep the most complete silence about this affair.’ English breaks off about what Estinien is; French instead demands total silence about the affair.

...But I have already said too much. What matters is that we find our thief and the Eye with all haste. When last sighted, Estinien was clad in black armor. Now go, and speak not a word of what I have told you to anyone.

  • FR Ywain m'a dit que vous étiez un(e) combattant(e) redoutable et que votre courage n'avait d'égal que votre loyauté. ‘Ywain told me you were a formidable fighter and that your courage was equaled only by your loyalty.’ English has Alberic stop, having said too much; French has him say Ywain called you a formidable fighter.

Speak with Logedanrel.

Logedanrel

Routes favored by Ishgardian fugitives? Now that's a question I don't hear every day. You aren't plotting some unsavory act yourself, are you?

  • FR Si j'ai vu quelqu'un de louche ? ‘Whether I have seen anyone shady?’ English repeats a question about fugitives' routes; French repeats a question about seeing anyone shady.
  • FR Pourriez-vous être plus précis(e) ? ‘Could you be more precise?’ English jokes that you might be plotting something yourself; French asks you to be more precise.
  • DE Wem bist du denn auf der Spur? ‘Who are you on the trail of, then?’ English jokes that you might be plotting something yourself; German asks whom you are tracking, perhaps a heretic.
  • JA あんた、何かを追っておるのか? ‘Are you chasing something?’ English jokes that you might be plotting something yourself; Japanese asks if you are chasing something.

Even if you were, I doubt you'd make it far. Anyroad, we've caught a few fleeing to the North Shroud. What with Gridania being home to nearly as many Elezen as Ishgard, it is no easy task to identify outsiders.

  • FR Non, désolé, ça ne me dit rien du tout. ‘No, sorry, that doesn't ring a bell at all.’ English teases you would not get far if you were; French says a fugitive in black armor rings no bell.
  • DE Also, ich würde mich ja nach Gridania absetzen. ‘Well, I myself would make off to Gridania.’ English says they have caught a few fleeing to the North Shroud; German says he himself would flee to Gridania.

If you're on the hunt for someone, you could do worse than to visit Florentel's Spire in the North Shroud and speak with a man named Idristan. If any suspicious persons have crossed the border in recent days, he'd be the first to know.

Speak with Idristan at Florentel's Spire.

Idristan

Hail, adventurer. Yes, I am the one tasked with monitoring those who would enter our lands by way of Coerthas. Hm? An Ishgardian knight clad in black armor?

No, I recall nothing of the sort─and such a striking visitor would be difficult to forget. My apologies, friend. I can only suggest that you return to Logedanrel and see if he has any other theories.

Speak with Logedanrel at the Observatorium.

Logedanrel

No luck, you say? Most curious. Why, it is nigh impossible that a fugitive could make it this far without being espied from Florentel's Spire.

Which leaves the possibility that your man is still in Ishgard. It runs counter to good sense─would the fugitive not want to put a distance of grounds between him and his pursuers?─but by the process of deduction, it is a possibility.

The climes of Ishgard are not kind to drifters and vagabonds. That said, there has been talk of curious smoke wafting from a cave east of here, at night. Were I you, I might begin my search there.

  • FR Cette fumée a immédiatement attiré mon attention car cette cave est le repaire de dangereux Ixali ; ce n'est pas vraiment le genre d'endroit où faire un feu de camp, voyez-vous ? ‘That smoke caught my eye at once because this cave is the lair of dangerous Ixal; it's not really the kind of place to light a campfire, you see?’ English says Ishgard's climate is unkind to drifters; French says the cave is a lair of dangerous Ixal.

Examine the campfire.

Estinien

That Ishgard would resort to sending coin-starved adventurers after me... I know not whether to laugh or feel insulted.

  • FR Je pensais qu'ils enverraient plus de monde à ma poursuite. ‘I thought they would send more people after me.’ English scoffs that Ishgard sends coin-starved adventurers; French says he expected more pursuers.

Th-The Eye! It rouses...for another!?

Preposterous...

Our paths shall cross again. You can be sure of it.

Report to Alberic.

Alberic

A dragoon clad in black, you say!? Tell me all that transpired!

By the Fury... That the Eye would choose another...

I had not thought it possible. In light of recent events, it would seem an explanation is in order.

The Eye is no ordinary relic. It harbors the power of the dragon, which it bestows upon a single chosen soul─the strongest and wisest dragoon.

He who is chosen is possessed of the power to fight our mortal foes, the dragons of Dravania, on equal footing, soaring the firmament as if it were an extension of the land. That man is known as the Azure Dragoon.

The Azure Dragoon is the light of hope for all Ishgardians, and the paragon of all dragoons.

  • DE Der Azur-Drachenreiter wird von jedem, der es nicht werden konnte, mit heimlichem Neid betrachtet. ‘The Azure Dragoon is regarded with secret envy by everyone who could not become one.’ English calls him the paragon of all dragoons; German says those who could not become him secretly envy him.

...For this reason, you may imagine how it pains me to have to confess that the man you encountered, the thief, is none other than the Azure Dragoon...and that I was once his teacher.

Needless to say, I acknowledge myself accountable for Estinien's misdeeds, and mean to do all in my power to find him and recover the Eye. But I cannot do this alone.

I require your help, [name]─you, who have received the power of the dragon.

You may labor to believe it, but there can be no mistake. The Soul of the Dragoon I bear glows in your presence─irrefutable proof that you are chosen. What I can ill explain, however, is the why of it.

Never before in Ishgard's long history has the Eye roused to more than one individual in a single generation. But it avails us naught to cudgel our brains about it.

The fact of the matter is that you are now a vessel for the power of the dragon. That dragon lies yet in slumber, however, and you must needs possess the means to wake it: the Soul of the Dragoon. I would entrust you with mine, [name].

Like Estinien, I once ruled the skies as the Azure Dragoon, although that power has since become lost to me. It was simply by force of habit that I have hitherto kept the soul upon my person.

I have no inkling as to why the Eye has seen fit to choose a second, and an outsider at that.

Yet one thing is clear: none can challenge the Azure Dragoon and conceivably prevail save another Azure Dragoon.

You are our only hope of bringing Estinien to justice and reclaiming the Eye. Of course, I do not ask that you do this unaided. I may be a dragoon no more, but what knowledge I have, I shall gladly impart to you.

  • DE Ich verlange nicht, dass du es umsonst machst. ‘I do not ask you to do it for nothing.’ English says he won't leave you unaided; German says he won't ask you to do it for nothing.

For indeed, when the time comes that you must face the Azure Dragoon, naught less than complete mastery over the power of the dragon will avail you.

That a perilous road lies ahead of you, I shall not deny. Knowing this, if you would still lend me your lance, I will teach you to harness the power that has chosen you.

Go forth, my young dragoon, and rouse the dragon within. I look forward to your return.
