Journal
  1. Acting Guildmaster Thubyrgeim wishes to assess the improvement of your arcanima skills.
  2. In order to test your growing aptitude as an arcanist, Thubyrgeim sends you back to the wilds of lower La Noscea to battle more challenging opponents. Slay three wild dodos and three tiny mandragoras.
  3. You have slain the designated creatures. Return to the Arcanists' Guild and report to Thubyrgeim.
  4. Now that you have displayed your competence with Carbuncle, you are next to attempt an exercise that simulates the cargo inspections performed by Mealvaan's Gate assessors. Head south of the Zephyr Gate and examine the crates found near the cliffs.
  5. You have defeated the creatures that lurked within the crates you were ordered to inspect. Now that the cargo is safe to handle, collect the contents and prepare to return to the guild.
  6. Upon gathering the inspected cargo, you turn to find that your actions had been observed by a strange Miqo'te─Foreseer K'lyhia, a chief assessor for Mealvaan's Gate. As the elected supervisor for your training, the assessor happily appraises your performance, and offers instruction to further improve your arcanist abilities. With the exercise at an end, she bids you return to Thubyrgeim at the Arcanists' Guild.
  7. You return to the guild and give your report of the day's lesson. Thubyrgeim explains that the strategically gifted K'lyhia was able to rise to her current position as foreseer using nothing more than an initiate's grimoire. Urging you to heed well the Miqo'te's advice, the acting guildmaster instructs you to continue your tactical training with Carbuncle. ※The next arcanist quest will be available from Thubyrgeim upon reaching level 10.
Hidden
Lore Besides the gear you choose, this lesson always gives the same reward: 1 Leather Grimoire.
Easter egg Whatever you answer, K'lyhia says 'Just as I predicted'. Then K'lyhia puts your chance of becoming a well-known arcanist at 90%, 'give or take half a percent'.
Spoiler about later in the story

Foreshadowing Note K'lyhia's worn-out starter grimoire, which Thubyrgeim points out. It was a gift from the absent guildmaster. That book is the key to the rest of the Arcanist story.

FF nod Carbuncle is your magic creature in this lesson. It is a character that keeps coming back in the Final Fantasy series of role-playing games. It goes well beyond this one game.
In-game text Encyclopaedia Eorzea explains carbuncles. Some mages use symbols made of shapes to give form to living aether. They also use them to unlock the hidden power inside certain gemstones.
Title reference The title is literal, as you look inside crates that hide monsters. It also echoes Brad Pitt's cry 'What's in the box?' in the thriller Se7en. Luckily, these crates hold vilekin.
Characters 2
  • Thubyrgeim

Thubyrgeim wants to test how much your arcanima, the arcanists' magic, has improved since your last trial.

What you know from earlier quests 1
    • #4 Way of the Arcanist: Thubyrgeim says arcanima draws on aether, a living energy, lets you call a helper named Carbuncle, and needs calm thinking in battle. After a trial against pests, she welcomes you as an arcanist and gives you a hunting log. Her name means "Magic Jewel".
  • K'lyhia

K'lyhia is a Miqo'te assessor at Mealvaan's Gate, where cargo is checked. You first meet her as a stranger who watched you fight, and she asks you to ignore her.

What happens in this quest spoilers for this quest
  • Thubyrgeim reminds her arcanists to eat. Her guild inspects cargo at Mealvaan's Gate, so she sets you a practice cargo check. She calls K'lyhia odd but the guild's best tactician, and hopes you can widen K'lyhia's view beyond arcanima.
  • K'lyhia: Thubyrgeim chose her to guide your training. K'lyhia loves calculations: she puts your odds of becoming a notable arcanist at 90%. Her worn starter grimoire (spellbook) was the absent guildmaster's gift; she rose to foreseer with it. Then she leaves to test tactics in battle.
What the Japanese, French and German versions say 10

Japanese

EN What's in the Box · '“Strategy is a tool used to manipulate one's situation into the desired reality.”'

, 'He said: “Strategy exists to create the reality you want.”'

The sigils are the shapes an arcanist draws. The title also echoes the guildmaster's motto about making the reality you want.

Name origin

EN What's in the Box

JA 「現実を創出する魔紋」, 'reality-creating sigils'

DE „Eine unerwartete Begegnung“, 'An unexpected encounter'

FR «Probabilité de rencontre statistico-arcanique», 'statistico-arcane encounter probability'

The German and the mock-scientific French titles stress the encounter. Only Japanese speaks of sigils.

EN 'I simply do what feels right.'

JA 「教えない」, 'Not telling!'

It is your third answer to K'lyhia's question, a cheeky refusal. The English answer is sincere.

EN 'Are you eating well? An empty stomach distracts the mind and leads to hurried judgment.'

On an empty stomach, you'll botch even a snap judgement.'

Thubyrgeim bends the old saying 「腹が減っては戦はできぬ」, 'you can't fight a battle on an empty stomach'.

French

Speech style

EN 'Though the opportune window to do so has passed, I would nevertheless introduce myself: I am K'lyhia, a Mealvaan's Gate assessor.' · 'It was the man who bestowed upon me this grimoire─the guildmaster himself!'

I was so absorbed in my arcano-linear equations that I think I forgot to introduce myself.' · «C'est l'illustre personne qui m'a offert mon précieux grrrimoire.», 'He's the illustrious person who gave me my precious grimoire.'

K'lyhia rolls her R's in almost every line. The English K'lyhia has no accent, only long-winded phrasing.

Title

EN What's in the Box

FR «Probabilité de rencontre statistico-arcanique», 'statistico-arcane encounter probability'

The title is in K'lyhia's own jargon. She keeps gluing words together, as in her «équations arcano-linéaires», 'arcano-linear equations', above.

German

Idiom

EN 'Are you eating well? An empty stomach distracts the mind and leads to hurried judgment.'

DE „Hast du schon gegessen? Leerer Bauch studiert nicht gern, sagen wir hier in Limsa Lominsa.“, 'Have you eaten yet? As we say here in Limsa Lominsa, an empty belly doesn't like to study.'

Like in Japanese, Thubyrgeim flips an old proverb: „Ein voller Bauch studiert nicht gern“, 'a full belly won't study'.

Wordplay

EN 'The probability of you becoming an arcanist of note is...90%!'

To be precise, I put your chances at 89.98 prophecent.'

Prophezent blends Prophezeiung, 'prophecy', and Prozent, 'percent', which suits a foreseer like K'lyhia. The English gives a plain 90%.

Different

EN 'Desire to outwit an enemy.' · 'Potential for amusement.'

I learned to fight from ladybirds, so with my foes I look at how their spots are arranged.' · „Ich habe das Kämpfen anhand von winzigen Mandragoras gelernt, also achte ich bei meinen Gegnern auf das Wippen ihrer Blättchen.“, 'I learned to fight from tiny mandragoras, so with my foes I look at how their little leaves bob.'

Two of your answers to K'lyhia are jokes, where the English ones are plain.

Different

EN '“Strategy is a tool used to manipulate one's situation into the desired reality.”'

DE «„Taktik ist das Mittel, um unsere Träume zu verwirklichen.“ Diese Worte stammen von ihm.», 'Tactics are the means to make our dreams come true. Those words are his.'

Here the guildmaster's motto speaks of dreams, not reality.

Accepting the quest

Thubyrgeim

Ah, [name], isn't it? Are you eating well? An empty stomach distracts the mind and leads to hurried judgment. I must oft remind my arcanists to take meals, so ensconced do they become in their studies.

‘Are you eating properly? On an empty stomach, you'll botch even a snap judgement.’ Thubyrgeim bends the old saying 「腹が減っては戦はできぬ」, 'you can't fight a battle on an empty stomach'.
‘Have you eaten yet? As we say here in Limsa Lominsa, an empty belly doesn't like to study.’ Like in Japanese, Thubyrgeim flips an old proverb: „Ein voller Bauch studiert nicht gern“, 'a full belly won't study'.
‘An empty belly does not like to study, as we say here in Limsa Lominsa.’ German makes it a local saying, flipping the proverb "a full belly does not like to study"; English states it plainly.

Speaking of such, have you been practicing your tactics with Carbuncle? I believe it is time to assess the improvement of your skills. As with your previous trial, I would have you defeat foes in lower La Noscea─three wild dodos and three tiny mandragoras, to be precise.

Watch carefully the behavior of your opponents, formulate an effective strategy, and utilize your arcane entity to its fullest potential. I expect you back in time for dinner/lunch.

  • FR Sois prudent(e). ‘Be careful.’ English expects you back in time for dinner/lunch; French just says be careful.
  • DE Viel Erfolg! ‘Good luck!’ English expects you back in time for dinner/lunch; German just wishes good luck.
‘Well then, off you go, and be careful.’ English expects you back in time for dinner/lunch; Japanese just tells you to go carefully.

Welcome back, [name]. It appears your coordination with Carbuncle is progressing at a satisfactory pace. Shall we test your growing acumen with a more practical examination?

Report to Thubyrgeim at the Arcanists' Guild

Thubyrgeim

Our work at Mealvaan's Gate requires us to inspect and record the contents of incoming cargo. To simulate such a task, I have had several crates transported to the cliff south of the Zephyr Gate.

I want you to examine those crates, then return the inspected cargo here to me.

You would be surprised at the depths to which some merchants will sink to deter our customs agents from performing thorough investigations. False bottoms, rotting foodstuffs, flesh-eating vilekin. I suggest you be prepared for any eventuality.

‘But be warned: the strangest creatures have a habit of hiding in crates standing around in the countryside to ambush unprepared adventurers.’ English: merchants sabotage customs inspections; German: creatures habitually hide in crates lying around to ambush adventurers.
  • DE Aber das nur am Rande ... ‘But that is just by the way ...’ German shrugs the warning off as a side remark; English seriously tells you to be prepared for anything.
‘In real inspections, it even happens that monsters have been slipped in among the cargo in order to obstruct us.’ Japanese mentions only monsters slipped into cargo; English lists false bottoms, rotting food and flesh-eating vilekin.

K'lyhia

???: I am not a threat! Pray ignore my presence for the present and allow me a moment to cogitate.

‘There's no need to worry about me!’ English: she assures you she is not a threat; French: she says there is no need to worry about her.
‘Just a moment, I am at an exciting part right now!’ German only says she is at an exciting part; English has her say she is no threat and must think.

???: The reaction to my sudden appearance was within expected parameters. But I must admit I did not expect so proficient a performance against the enemies set against you!

‘I must admit, however, that I must have made a small calculation error today...’ French frames the surprise as her own calculation error; English says she did not expect your proficient performance.
‘In my forecast for today I seem to have made a calculation error, and the result ...’ German calls it an error in her forecast for the day; English says she did not expect your proficient performance.
‘More to the point, what deserves attention is today's happy miscalculation!’ Japanese calls you today's happy miscalculation; English says she did not expect such a proficient performance.

???: Yet, effective though your tactics were, I spied much room for improvement. As I watched you battle, the wheels of my mind whirled into motion, as they are wont to do, inventing other possible strategies you might have employed.

‘I don't understand how this could have happened.’ English sees much room for improvement in your tactics; French says she doesn't understand how this happened.
‘I did follow to the letter the algorithms described in my grimoire and added the corresponding factors to them...’ English: watching you, she invented other strategies; French: she followed her grimoire's algorithms exactly.
‘I do wonder, however, how that could have happened.’ English sees much room for improvement in your tactics; German wonders how that could have happened.
  • DE Ich hatte doch alles ganz genau in meinem Grimoire berechnet ... ‘But I had calculated everything precisely in my grimoire...’ English: watching you, she invented other strategies; German: she had calculated everything precisely in her grimoire.

???: Let's see... Taking into account your current level of ability, factoring in the aetheric constant, multiplying by the number of opponents, then applying your tactics to other potential combat scenarios... Oh, dear. My calculations indicate failure upon encountering threat level 9,785.

‘If I multiply the chances of a magico-statistically prrredictable situation by the algebraico-ethereal coefficient... all of it divided by the abracadabra-geometric product... then I subtract the variable of table 9785...’ English: her calculations predict your failure at threat level 9,785; French: 9785 is a table variable she subtracts.
‘If I now square the hypnosis-hypotenuse with the abracadabra-algebraic product...’ English multiplies by the number of opponents; German squares a nonsense "hypnosis-hypotenuse" with an "abracadabra-algebraic product".
‘Table 777.07c lists all the variables of the magimathematical aether field precisely...’ English factors in your current ability; German consults table 777.07c of aether-field variables.
‘While I was working out the possible battle situations that could be expected, I ended up stumbling at number 9785.’ Japanese says she herself got stuck at the 9,785th scenario; English says the tactics fail at threat level 9,785.

???: Well! We'll have to see what we can do about that!

  • FR Mon calcul est bon, cette fois-ci ! ‘My calculation is right this time!’ English: she will see what can be done about your weakness; French: she announces her calculation is finally right.
  • DE Jetzt stimmt meine Berechnung wieder! ‘Now my calculation is correct again!’ English: she will see what can be done about your weakness; German: she announces her calculation is correct again.
‘Right, with this the calculation is complete!’ English: she will see what can be done about your weakness; Japanese: she announces her calculation is complete.

Collect the crates

K'lyhia

Though the opportune window to do so has passed, I would nevertheless introduce myself: I am K'lyhia, a Mealvaan's Gate assessor.

Acting Guildmaster Thubyrgeim elected me to oversee your training, and provide any necessary guidance and instruction in the field of arcanima.

‘Thubyrgeim asked me to take you under my wing. But I haven't really decided yet whether I want to.’ English: she was appointed to oversee your training; German: she was asked but hasn't decided whether she wants to.
‘So I hope that we will be able to help each other.’ French has her hope for mutual help between fellow students; English has her simply instruct you.

From what I have observed thus far, you have an admirable grasp of the fundamentals.

I do, however, wish to confirm one small detail. Regarding your choice of arcane geometries, what factor most influences your actions during battle?

Aha! Just as I predicted. And now I have the final element needed to perform another calculation. Hmmm. The probability of you becoming an arcanist of note is...90%! Give or take half a percent.

‘To be precise, I put your chances at 89.98 prophecent.’ Prophezent blends Prophezeiung, 'prophecy', and Prozent, 'percent', which suits a foreseer like K'lyhia. The English gives a plain 90%.
  • FR 89,54 % ! ‘So, according to my calculations, your chances of becoming a great arcanist are... 89.54%!’ English says 90%, give or take half a percent; French gives an exact 89.54%.
‘That is exactly what I am writing about in my latest thesis paper too.’ English: your answer matches her prediction; German: it is exactly the subject of her latest thesis paper.

Yes, the certainty is quite high. After all, I only know of one other practitioner who responded to my question in the same manner.

‘Ah! That, by the way, is exactly the same chance that was calculated for another novice arcanist.’ English: only one other person answered her question the same way; German: the same odds were calculated for another novice.

It was the man who bestowed upon me this grimoire─the guildmaster himself!

  • DE Ich führe über alle Berechnungen genau Buch, in meinem guten Grimoire hier. ‘I keep a precise record of all calculations, in my good grimoire here.’ English: the guildmaster gave her this grimoire; German: she only says she records all her calculations in it.

While our inscrutable leader is, as I'm sure you've heard, on an indefinite leave of absence, he did leave us with his most notorious saying to date:

  • FR Je ne sais pas où il est allé, mais il me répétait toujourrrs la chose suivante. ‘I don't know where he has gone, but he always used to repeat the following to me.’ French says she does not know where he went; English calls it an indefinite leave of absence.
  • DE Der allerdings spurlos verschwunden ist ... ‘Who, however, has vanished without a trace ...’ German says the guildmaster vanished without a trace; English says he is on an indefinite leave of absence.
‘The guildmaster's whereabouts are unknown at present, but he always used to say this.’ Japanese says his whereabouts are unknown; English says he is on an indefinite leave of absence.

“Strategy is a tool used to manipulate one's situation into the desired reality.”

‘He said: “Strategy exists to create the reality you want.”’ The sigils are the shapes an arcanist draws. The title also echoes the guildmaster's motto about making the reality you want.
‘Tactics are the means to make our dreams come true. Those words are his.’ Here the guildmaster's motto speaks of dreams, not reality.
‘"Tactics are the means to make our dreams come true."’ German makes the saying about fulfilling dreams; English is about bending one's situation into the desired reality.

No matter how gifted you and I might be, however, the instantaneous manipulation of reality that might cause us to suddenly become mighty arcanists is beyond our present abilities. Discipline and experience is the finest strategy in this case.

‘Whether here in Eorzea or elsewhere, all life is inspired by dreams.’ English: becoming mighty arcanists instantly is beyond us; German: all life is inspired by dreams.
‘Even if we cannot work on making our dreams come true without pause, we still must not forget them.’ English: discipline and experience are the best strategy; German: we must not forget our dreams.

I suggest you continue to focus on refining your aptitude with Carbuncle. Mastery with an arcane entity will greatly improve your success as a wielder of arcanima!

Here ends your lesson for today. Pray return directly to the guild─I believe Mistress Thubyrgeim is awaiting some inspected cargo.

And what of myself? I'm off to the fields, of course! The tactics I reasoned out earlier must be attempted in real-life scenarios. Theory is all well and good, but there is no substitute for actual combat. We will meet again soon.

Thubyrgeim

Ah, [name]. Have you returned with the cargo?

Report to Thubyrgeim at the Arcanists' Guild

Thubyrgeim

Yes, everything seems to be in order─relatively clear of blood and other gore. That can be something of a problem in our profession, you understand. I also had word from K'lyhia regarding your performance. She seemed eager to continue your training.

‘That's very good for a first time.’ English jokes the cargo is fairly free of blood and gore; French says it is very good for a first time.
  • DE Gute Arbeit. ‘Good work.’ English jokes the cargo is fairly free of blood and gore; German just says good work.
  • DE Wie gefällt dir K'lyhia? ‘How do you like K'lyhia?’ English: K'lyhia reported to her on your performance; German: she asks how you like K'lyhia.
‘Well done for a first time.’ English jokes the cargo is fairly free of blood and gore; Japanese says it is well done for a first time.
‘She gives lectures at the guild in her free time and now and then mentors especially promising newcomers.’ German describes her spare-time lecturing and mentoring; English reports that she sent word and is eager to train you.

An odd lass, I'll admit, but the guild can boast no finer mind for tactics. You would do well to heed the instruction she offers, particularly that which touches on the diligent approach to our art.

‘She has agreed to take on part of your training.’ English calls her odd but the guild's finest tactical mind; German says she agreed to take on part of your training.
‘She only accepts candidates for whom she calculates a high chance of success.’ English urges you to heed her teaching; German says she only accepts candidates she calculates will succeed.
‘I must admit that I am sometimes a little lost in her gibberish, but she is very gifted in the strategic side of arcanima.’ French has Thubyrgeim admit she gets lost in K'lyhia's gibberish; English only calls her an odd lass.
‘And as far as I know she has never yet miscalculated there.’ German says her predictions have never been wrong; English praises her as the guild's finest tactical mind.

Did you perhaps notice the battered tome K'lyhia carries? That initiate's grimoire has served her from the day she entered the guild. She has her reasons, but it's admittedly strange to see it kept all the way to her present position as foreseer.

‘She has used the same one since she joined the guild, and almost always has her nose in it, checking her calculations and other probabilities.’ English finds it strange she kept it all the way to foreseer; French says she always has her nose in it checking calculations.
‘She spends more time with her spellbook than with anyone else.’ English finds it strange she kept it all the way to foreseer; German says she spends more time with it than with anyone.

I fear such an intense focus on arcanima has led her to overlook other important aspects of life... As our master strategist guides your arcanist training, I hope that you might return the favor and help to broaden her own perspective, somewhat.

‘Yet one can learn just as much from one's companions as from formulas and geometric patterns.’ English asks you to help broaden K'lyhia's perspective; German says companions teach as much as formulas.
‘We arcanists tend to devote ourselves entirely to our studies and sometimes forget social relationships because of it.’ English says K'lyhia herself overlooks other parts of life; German says arcanists in general tend to.
‘Besides, I am afraid she has lost sight of important things such as relationships with others, through concentrating on the study of arcanima.’ French names what she neglects, relationships with other people; English keeps it vague.

But enough of such matters for the moment. You have done well this day, [name]. Continue your practice with Carbuncle, as K'lyhia has bid. I will be here when the time comes for your next lesson.

‘Why don't you spend the rest of the day with a marauder or a gladiator outside the city gates?’ English: keep practicing with Carbuncle as K'lyhia said; German: spend the day with a marauder or gladiator outside town.
