Steps

  1. Journey to Candlekeep Quay and relay Ahtbyrm's /doubt to Haldbroda.
Journal
  1. Ahtbyrm is looking for a member of his crew and the items he was supposed to deliver.
  2. Take the road leading west from the Moraby Drydocks and speak with Haldbroda regarding the whereabouts of one Fyrilsmyd, making sure to express your /doubt concerning his honesty.
  3. It appears that Haldbroda truly does not recall ever seeing Fyrilsmyd. Could it be that the young shipwright was somehow caught up in the tragedy that claimed a ship off of the Salt Strand?
Hidden
Lore In idle talk, Haldbroda explains the ferries from Candlekeep Quay. They are the main way to travel by water between island ports like Limsa Lominsa and Aleport.
Easter egg Ahtbyrm threatens to send Haldbroda to rot on Turtleback Island. In the original 1.0 game, it was a Skirmish isle. There the Alliance let monsters loose for joint training.
Title reference The title takes the saying 'without a doubt' word for word. You must use the /doubt emote on Haldbroda to question his honesty.

What you know from earlier quests 1
    • #57 On to the Drydocks: Ahtbyrm is angry at another delay, then says sorry to you, the messenger. He leads work on the Victory, the first new warship since the Calamity, the disaster that sank most of their ships. To him it is a symbol of Limsa Lominsa's rebirth.
  • Haldbroda

Haldbroda works at Candlekeep Quay. In his letters to Ahtbyrm, he says he never saw the missing shipwright Fyrilsmyd or his supplies.

What happens in this quest spoilers for this quest
  • Ahtbyrm: Fyrilsmyd was never late in twelve months. Ahtbyrm doubts Haldbroda at Candlekeep Quay, who claims he never saw Fyrilsmyd. Ahtbyrm cannot leave his post, so he sends you to threaten Haldbroda with a move to lonely Turtleback Island.
  • Haldbroda calls Ahtbyrm a "self-righteous dog" and is shaken by the Turtleback Island threat. He swears on his grandmother's grave that he knows nothing. The Quay has been overwhelmed since a Lominsan cargo ship sank off the Salt Strand.
What the Japanese, French and German versions say 5

Japanese

EN 'Take the road leading west from the Moraby Drydocks and speak with Haldbroda regarding the whereabouts of one Fyrilsmyd, making sure to express your /doubt concerning his honesty.'

, 'Use the “Interrogate” emote on Haldbroda, the sailor at Candlekeep Quay, and get him to tell you how the ferry service is running.'

No one calls Haldbroda a liar. The jumpy Haldbroda at once reports the ferry's accident at sea.

French

Different

EN 'As I cannot leave my post, I would ask you to travel to Candlekeep Quay in my stead and inform Haldbroda that if he insists on playing these games, I will personally see that he is transferred to Turtleback Island, where he can rot alone in the middle of the sea for eternity.'

This sailor is not very talkative, but if you question him, he will have to tell you what he knows.'

Here the emote is /questionner, not /doubt. Ahtbyrm is merely worried and suspects no liar.

Different

EN 'Hells, we here at the Quay have had enough trouble these past few suns, what with the sinking of that Lominsan cargo ship off the Salt Strand.'

FR «C'est étrange quand même, parce qu'il y avait un marin vétéran aux commandes...», 'It's strange, though, because a veteran sailor was at the helm...'

Haldbroda finds the wreck strange, which hints at foul play. The English sees nothing strange.

German

Different

EN 'Journey to Candlekeep Quay and relay Ahtbyrm's /doubt to Haldbroda.' · 'As I cannot leave my post, I would ask you to travel to Candlekeep Quay in my stead and inform Haldbroda that if he insists on playing these games, I will personally see that he is transferred to Turtleback Island, where he can rot alone in the middle of the sea for eternity.'

DE „Haldbroda /schuld zuweisen“, 'Lay /blame on Haldbroda' · „Falls er sich weiter dumm stellt, dann beschuldige ihn in aller Öffentlichkeit!“, 'If he keeps playing dumb, accuse him in public!'

Your emote is /schuld, 'blame', instead of /doubt.

Different

EN 'Hells, we here at the Quay have had enough trouble these past few suns, what with the sinking of that Lominsan cargo ship off the Salt Strand.'

First we have to find out how the ship could capsize at all, with so many old hands aboard.'

Haldbroda wonders how the ship capsized. As in French, the crew's experience makes it suspicious.

Ahtbyrm

Where in the seven hells is that man!? Not once in twelve moons has he been late with a shipment, and now two whole turns of the sun without a single word.

A shipwright of mine─a young man named Fyrilsmyd─recently left Candlekeep Quay to retrieve several crates of supplies ordered from Limsa Lominsa...but has yet to return.

I have sent several missives to Haldbroda, but his replies are always the same. He does not recall ever seeing the wright, nor the supplies he was scheduled to collect. That man knows something, and I severely doubt he is telling me the whole truth.

  • FR Ça m'inquiète vraiment, tout ça. ‘All this really worries me.’ English suspects Haldbroda is not telling the whole truth; French only says the situation worries him.
‘The ferry he took should already have reached Candlekeep Quay, but...’ English suspects Haldbroda is not telling the whole truth; Japanese only says the ferry should already be in.
‘And yet the ferry he took to come back must already have arrived at the Torch quay...’ French Ahtbyrm is simply worried, since the ferry should have arrived; English Ahtbyrm suspects Haldbroda of lying.

As I cannot leave my post, I would ask you to travel to Candlekeep Quay in my stead and inform Haldbroda that if he insists on playing these games, I will personally see that he is transferred to Turtleback Island, where he can rot alone in the middle of the sea for eternity.

‘Say, would you go there and ask Haldbroda what is going on? This sailor is not very talkative, but if you question him, he will have to tell you what he knows.’ Here the emote is /questionner, not /doubt. Ahtbyrm is merely worried and suspects no liar.
‘If he keeps playing dumb, accuse him in public!’ Your emote is /schuld, 'blame', instead of /doubt.
‘This sailor isn't very talkative, but if you question him, he'll be forced to tell you what he knows.’ English threatens to have Haldbroda sent to rot on Turtleback Island; French says questioning will force him to talk.
‘Sorry, but go to Candlekeep Quay and, with Haldbroda who manages the ferry, try "pressing" him about how the service is running.’ English threatens to have Haldbroda sent to rot on Turtleback Island; Japanese just asks you to press him about the ferry.

Journey to Candlekeep Quay and relay Ahtbyrm's /doubt to Haldbroda.

Haldbroda

Eh? Does that self-righteous dog Ahtbyrm doubt that I've never told him anything less than the truth!?

  • FR Tu veux me questionner ou quoi ? ‘You want to question me or what?’ English Haldbroda angrily insults Ahtbyrm for doubting him; French Haldbroda asks whether you want to question him.
‘What'll I do if I get "pressed"...’ English Haldbroda angrily insults Ahtbyrm for doubting him; Japanese Haldbroda nervously worries about being pressed.
  • FR Qu'est-ce que t'as à me regarder comme ça... ‘What are you looking at me like that for...!?’ French Haldbroda snaps at you for staring; he neither mentions nor insults Ahtbyrm.

Turtleback Island!? He cannot do that...can he?

  • DE Jetzt reicht es mir aber! ‘Now I've had enough!’ English Haldbroda is frightened by the Turtleback Island threat; German Haldbroda angrily says he has had enough.
‘Actually, the ferry has had an accident at sea!’ English Haldbroda panics about being sent to Turtleback Island; Japanese reveals the ferry had an accident at sea.

I swear on my poor nana's grave, Navigator rest her soul, I know naught of this Fyrilsmyd, nor his precious supplies.

‘What!? The head of the Moraby shipyard is worried because one of his workers hasn't come back, you say?’ English swears on his nana's grave he knows nothing of Fyrilsmyd; French is surprised to hear a worker hasn't returned.
‘What, a shipwright from the Moraby Drydocks still hasn't come back, even past the scheduled time!?’ English swears on his nana's grave he knows nothing of Fyrilsmyd; Japanese is shocked to hear a shipwright hasn't returned.

Hells, we here at the Quay have had enough trouble these past few suns, what with the sinking of that Lominsan cargo ship off the Salt Strand. I haven't the time to take a proper piss, let alone make note of every scrag that wanders in off the Grip.

‘If he was aboard the ferry, maybe he fell when the accident happened.’ English says he is too busy to notice every stranger; French suggests the man may have fallen during the ferry accident.
‘It could be that he was on the capsized ship, but that is hard to check.’ English says he is too busy to notice every stranger; German suggests the man may have been on the capsized ship.
‘Could he have been thrown into the sea in the accident...!?’ English says he is too busy to notice every stranger; Japanese fears the man was thrown into the sea in the accident.
