  1. Speak with K'lyhia.
  2. Speak with Thubyrgeim.
Journal
  1. Acting Guildmaster Thubyrgeim wishes to inform you of an important task.
  2. Thubyrgeim informs you that Foreseer K'lyhia has requested your presence on another official inspection. There is, however, one condition for your participation. Make your way to the practice floor of the Arcanists' Guild and speak with the Miqo'te assessor for a full explanation.
  3. K'lyhia explains that to aid her in the forthcoming inspection, you will need to acquire the arcane geometry required to summon Topaz Carbuncle. Speak with Thubyrgeim, and request to be taught the necessary technique.
  4. Thubyrgeim has taught you the method for summoning Topaz Carbuncle. Utilize the abilities of your newfound familiar to ensure a successful─and safe─inspection.
Hidden
Easter egg Thubyrgeim has a running joke. Each lesson starts with a health check. First it was eating well (What's in the Box), then fast walks (Tactical Planning), and now sleep.
Easter egg Answer 'No' to K'lyhia and she keeps asking until you say yes. This is a common RPG pattern, 'But thou must!', named after the original Dragon Quest.
Patch change Summon Topaz, the action taught here, is a newer skill. It came in patch 6.0 (2021-12-07) and replaced the old Summon II.
Characters 2
  • Thubyrgeim

Thubyrgeim has word for you from Foreseer K'lyhia about an important task.

What you know from earlier quests 3
    • #4 Way of the Arcanist: Thubyrgeim says arcanima draws on aether, a living energy, lets you call a helper named Carbuncle, and needs calm thinking in battle. After a trial against pests, she welcomes you as an arcanist and gives you a hunting log. Her name means "Magic Jewel".
    • #35 What's in the Box: Thubyrgeim reminds her arcanists to eat. Her guild inspects cargo at Mealvaan's Gate, so she sets you a practice cargo check. She calls K'lyhia odd but the guild's best tactician, and hopes you can widen K'lyhia's view beyond arcanima.
    • #51 Tactical Planning: Thubyrgeim has you slay three roselings and three wild jackals, calling three the perfect sample size, then sends you with K'lyhia. Pleased, she allows you to train at other guilds, but advises mastering arcanima first. Off duty, the twenty-nine-year-old teaches children to read.
  • K'lyhia

K'lyhia wants you with her on another official inspection, under one condition.

What you know from earlier quests 2
    • #35 What's in the Box: Thubyrgeim chose her to guide your training. K'lyhia loves calculations: she puts your odds of becoming a notable arcanist at 90%. Her worn starter grimoire (spellbook) was the absent guildmaster's gift; she rose to foreseer with it. Then she leaves to test tactics in battle.
    • #51 Tactical Planning: K'lyhia, a foreseer at Mealvaan's Gate, the city's customs, inspects the Boilstox, goblin peddlers suspected of smuggling. She plans tactics well but lacks the reflexes to use them. She teaches you to know your own strengths, and rates your chance of greatness 97%.
What happens in this quest spoilers for this quest
  • Thubyrgeim notices you look tired and asks if you sleep properly, since reasoning suffers without rest. Each of her lessons starts with such a health check. She teaches you to summon Topaz Carbuncle, a magic ally, for use if the inspection turns sour.
  • K'lyhia checks merchant ships in Limsa Lominsa's ports daily for Mealvaan's Gate. She is about to board a ship suspected of smuggling and puts the odds of resistance at 75%. She requires you to learn Topaz Carbuncle first, and keeps asking until you agree.
What the Japanese, French and German versions say 8

Japanese

EN Topaz Teachings · Over the Rails

JA 「華麗なる懐柔戦術」, 'the Splendid Tactics of Winning People Over' · 「無残なる臨検戦術」, 'the wretched Inspection Tactics'

The title pairs with that of Over the Rails, another arcanist quest. Winning someone over means getting them to do as you wish.

EN 'You seem tired, [name]. Are you sleeping properly?' · 'Foreseer K'lyhia has requested you accompany her on another official inspection.'

Getting enough sleep?' , 'K'lyhia wants you along on a Customs House inspection, and she asked for you by name.'

Thubyrgeim talks like a brisk, motherly figure. In English she sounds formal and academic.

French

Title

EN Topaz Teachings · 'In the case of smugglers, however, there is a 75% probability of encountering...resistance.'

But if they really are smugglers, my estimates, based on the magico-tangential formula of algebraico-aetherial probabilities, give a 75.51% chance that they will attack me.'

The title copies K'lyhia's made-up science words. The English K'lyhia just gives a number.

Idiom

EN 'With such an ally at your command, even the harshest of enemies will falter before you.'

As they say, attack is the best form of defence. You can end the fight quickly and so cut the damage dealt even by the most dangerous foes.'

K'lyhia sells Topaz Carbuncle with this saying. The English K'lyhia has none.

Speech style

EN 'Very good.'

FR «Merrrci !», 'Thank you!'

K'lyhia rolls her r's, as in «forrrmule», 'formula', while Thubyrgeim speaks normally. The English K'lyhia has no accent.

German

Wordplay

EN 'I will soon be boarding a trading vessel suspected of smuggling.'

I analysed the past few months' trade traffic and calculated an 88.88 prophe-cent probability that a merchant ship from Gridania, which has just docked, is carrying undeclared goods.'

K'lyhia's coined word mixes „Prophezeiung“, 'prophecy', and „Prozent“, 'percent'. It suits a foreseer.

Different

EN 'Do you accept this duty?'

DE „Wie groß ist der Wunderwinkel des Kuriosoquadrats?“, 'How big is the wonder-angle of the curioso-square?'

Before Thubyrgeim teaches you Topaz Carbuncle, K'lyhia springs this surprise test on you. The English only asks if you accept the duty.

Name

EN 'Acting Guildmaster Thubyrgeim wishes to inform you of an important task.'

DE „Thubyrgeim von der Hermetikergilde hat einen neuen Inspektionsauftrag für dich.“, 'Thubyrgeim of the Guild of Hermeticists has a new inspection job for you.'

The name comes from Hermeticism, the secret lore named for Hermes Trismegistus. The English 'Arcanists' Guild' has no such link.

Accepting the quest

Thubyrgeim

You seem tired, [name]. Are you sleeping properly? One's reasoning can suffer without sufficient rest and recuperation.

‘Studying can really take you over.’ English warns that reasoning suffers without rest; German says studies can really consume you.

Should you deem yourself fit for duty, pray make your way down to the practice floor. Foreseer K'lyhia has requested you accompany her on another official inspection.

‘K'lyhia wants you along on a Customs House inspection, and she asked for you by name.’

There is, however, a requirement for your participation. The foreseer will explain the situation.

‘They say she sometimes gives a surprise test ...’ English says there is a requirement for your participation; German hints she sometimes gives surprise tests.

Speak with K'lyhia.

K'lyhia

I was beginning to think I'd miscalculated, [name]. Thank you for coming. I will soon be boarding a trading vessel suspected of smuggling.

‘Overnight I analysed the past few months' trade traffic and calculated an 88.88 prophe-cent probability that a merchant ship from Gridania, which has just docked, is carrying undeclared goods.’ K'lyhia's coined word mixes „Prophezeiung“, 'prophecy', and „Prozent“, 'percent'. It suits a foreseer.
‘I had calculated the precise moment of your arrival.’ English says she began to think she'd miscalculated; French says she had calculated your exact arrival time.

All merchant ships that make use of Limsa Lominsa's ports are subject to inspection by Mealvaan's Gate assessors─it is a routine I perform daily.

In the case of smugglers, however, there is a 75% probability of encountering...resistance. Thus, I would appreciate your company during this assignment.

It is now that we must discuss the requirement of which you were informed: though I have full confidence in your martial expertise, it is imperative that you first acquire the ability to summon Topaz Carbuncle. Such knowledge will be released to you contingent on your acceptance of this duty.

‘If you pass it, I will allow Thubyrgeim to teach you how to summon a Topaz Carbuncle.’ English makes the teaching depend on accepting this duty; German makes it depend on passing a surprise test.

Then I regret that the method for summoning Topaz Carbuncle must be denied you. Will you not reconsider?

  • DE Kleiner, sagst du ... ‘Smaller, you say ...’ English regrets denying you the technique; German reacts to your test answer «smaller» and asks you to think again.

Very good. The arcane entity given form by the topaz geometry will further expand your offensive capabilities.

  • FR Merrrci ! ‘Thank you!’ K'lyhia rolls her r's, as in «forrrmule», 'formula', while Thubyrgeim speaks normally. The English K'lyhia has no accent.
‘In the summoning aethergram, the protective powers of the topaz gem are precisely expressed through magimathematical formulae and shapes.’ English says it expands your offensive capabilities; German speaks of the topaz's protective powers.

With such an ally at your command, even the harshest of enemies will falter before you. Indeed, we could not conduct these dangerous spot inspections without its support.

Please return to Mistress Thubyrgeim and inform her of your participation. I will join you once I have completed some final adjustments to my tactical formulae.

Please request Mistress Thubyrgeim to teach you the Topaz Carbuncle geometry. I will join you after I have rechecked my strategic calculations.

Speak with Thubyrgeim.

Thubyrgeim

You have agreed to accompany the foreseer? Then I shall gladly instruct you in the use of Topaz Carbuncle.

  • DE Du hast den Test also bestanden? ‘So you passed the test?’ English asks whether you agreed to accompany the foreseer; German asks whether you passed the test.

Pray do not hesitate to employ this entity in combat should the inspection turn sour.
