Steps

  1. Speak with Hihira at Little Ala Mhigo.
  2. Speak with Gundobald.
Journal
  1. Hihibaru has a suggestion to help you with your investigation.
  2. In light of your run-in with an Ala Mhigan bandit, Hihibaru recommends that you next take your investigation to Little Ala Mhigo. His daughter, a lass named Hihira, has taken up residence there, and should be able to lend you a hand.
  3. Hihira has no knowledge of Lahabrea. She recommends you speak with a man named Gundobald, the leader of the refugee settlement.
  4. As forewarned, you receive a cold welcome from Gundobald. It seems that some effort will be required on your part if the residents of Little Ala Mhigo are to warm to you.
Hidden
Lore Gundobald has a typical Highlander name, like most folk from Ala Mhigo. Highlander first names are made to sound like medieval European names with Germanic roots.
Characters 3
  • Hihibaru

Hihibaru links the Ala Mhigan bandit to the masked man and has an idea for where you should look next.

What you know from earlier quests 3
    • #136 Shadow of Darkness: Hihibaru greets you warmly and says he can provide anything, probably. At first he takes your question as a shopping request. Then he hints that the masked man is in some rumors he heard, and asks you to linger.
    • #137 Highbridge Times: Hihibaru sold everything for his business, hoping for pilgrims at Highbridge. Beastman raids keep them away, and he fears going bankrupt. He snaps at you, then apologizes. He suspects someone is directing the Qiqirn raids and promises to watch for the masked man.
    • #138 Where There Is Smoke: Hihibaru saw the masked man meet Qiqirn at a fire near Thal's Respite. He gives you a smoldering coal to call a similar meeting. The bandit's scroll bears a prayer to Rhalgr, god of Ala Mhigo, so he judges the man Ala Mhigan.
  • Hihira

Hihira is Hihibaru's daughter. She has moved to Little Ala Mhigo, the refugee settlement in southern Thanalan.

  • Gundobald

Gundobald is the leader of Little Ala Mhigo, a settlement of Ala Mhigan refugees in southern Thanalan.

Accepting the quest

Hihibaru

The Ala Mhigan bandit you had a run-in with is somehow connected to your masked man of mystery.

So, it stands to reason that if you want to pick up the trail again, you should head toward Little Ala Mhigo, over in southern Thanalan.

Just so you know what to expect, the settlement is the favored destination for those refugees who couldn't...well, adapt to life in Ul'dah.

The hearts of the denizens are said to be as barren as the wasteland they live in. And for all intents and purposes, it's a lawless place. Be prepared for a not-so-warm welcome.

Now, I'm not certain how much a help she will be, but it just so happens I have a daughter who has, er...relocated to Little Ala Mhigo. Her name is Hihira, and it shouldn't hurt to seek her out first.

And while you have her attention...I'd be obliged if you could send my love. Not a day goes by that I don't think of her.

I suppose this is it, then! I had hoped that you would linger here a while─cull some fiends, spend some coin, what have you─but something tells me you're destined for greater things. Wherever it is you end up, I wish you the best!

‘I'd prefer you stayed and left your gil in Highbridge, but our meeting has shown me that I probably need to improve the appeal of my offer a bit.’ English says the hero is destined for greater things; German says Hihibaru must make his offer more attractive.
  • JA …… ‘...Honestly, I'm not cut out for business, if I say so myself.’ English says the hero is destined for greater things; Japanese says Hihibaru is not cut out for business.

Speak with Hihira at Little Ala Mhigo.

Hihira

...Hm? Why, yes, Hihibaru's my father... He said what? I wish I could be a better daughter to him. It's just that─ Oh, I'm sorry... I shouldn't bother you with family matters. But I am grateful to you for delivering the message. Now then, what brings you here?

‘I hope he didn't try to talk you into buying half of Highbridge.’ English has Hihira wish she were a better daughter; German has her hope he didn't push half of Highbridge on you.

A masked man? I'm afraid the description doesn't ring any bells, but one of the others here may have seen something. I would recommend you first speak with Gundobald, the leader of the settlement. I must warn you, though, he isn't exactly...accommodating to outsiders.

Speak with Gundobald.

Gundobald

Who are you? State your business, and be quick about it.

Looking for a masked villain, you say? And why should we help you, pray?

We struggle enough without having to answer the whim of every outsider.

‘This place is a refuge for the pitiful remnant of our proud people, for all those who escaped the claws of the Garlean Empire.’ English says they struggle enough without outsiders' whims; German describes the settlement as a refuge for his people.
‘The place where we bide our time in hiding to make a comeback, we Ala Mhigans driven from our homeland by the Empire... that is this place, Little Ala Mhigo.’ English says they struggle enough without outsiders' whims; Japanese says the settlement bides its time for a comeback.

You are not welcome here. Begone.
