Journal
  1. Ancreta, sentry at the Eyes, solicits assistance.
  2. Ancreta's grandfather, head of the Red Rooster Stead, has charged her with the procurement of three livers from the rivertoads indigenous to the Eyes. Alas, the squeamish sentry is sickened by the mere thought of handling the livers, and requests that you obtain them in her stead.
  3. You have obtained the requested amount of rivertoad livers. Show them to Ancreta at the Eyes.
  4. Unable to leave her post and loath to handle the livers, Ancreta tasks you with delivering them to her grandfather Anaoc at the Red Rooster Stead.
  5. The livers give Anaoc's fertilizer more potency...or so you are told. Adopting advanced agricultural techniques has served the farm well to date, and promises a prosperous future to come.
Hidden
Lore Ancreta explains why the wool matters. The barley and wool from the Stead feed and clothe the people of Limsa Lominsa.
Easter egg Anaoc's fertilizer tip echoes the real New World. There, Squanto taught the Plymouth settlers to plant their corn with fish. Anaoc uses toad livers instead.
Spoiler about later in the story

Foreshadowing Listen for a quick, passing mention of the 'New Worlders'. They come from a far land across the sea. For a long time, the game names that land only in passing. Remember it.

In-game text The sightseeing log praises the farmers of the Stead. They are proud that they will give up a harvest if it means a better crop the next autumn.
Title reference The title is a pun on 'Cry Me a River', the sad 1953 love song made famous by Julie London. It swaps the river for the toad livers you fetch.

Ancreta is on sentry duty at the Eyes. Her grandfather wants three rivertoad livers, but the thought of handling slimy livers makes her shiver.

What you know from earlier quests 1
    • #22 Fool Me Once: Ancreta says you were tricked: the Yellowjackets hire adventurers only through the Adventurers' Guild, and the rules forbid her to give work directly. Still, she has a personal request if you help unofficially. She guards the main road north to the Red Rooster Stead.
  • Anaoc

Anaoc is Ancreta's grandfather and the head of the Red Rooster Stead, a farm. He has asked her to bring him rivertoad livers.

  • Niniya

What you know from earlier quests 3
    • #2 Making a Name: Niniya sends you to collect herbs that might be illegal "dream flowers" and hand them in. They are only common lavender: Niniya was playing a joke on you. Niniya says adventurers have met at this place for almost twenty years.
    • #10 Close to Home: Baderon points Niniya out and suggests you hear what she has to say. Small errands like hers, he says, build your name as someone folk can trust, and then the jobs get harder and pay better.
    • #22 Fool Me Once: Niniya says the key lesson for new adventurers is to question everyone's motives. Niniya sends you to Ancreta at the Eyes for work, but it is a second prank, after the quest Making a Name: Ancreta cannot hire you directly.
What happens in this quest spoilers for this quest
  • Ancreta asks you to slay rivertoads for the livers. She cannot leave her post, and the sight of them turns her stomach, so you deliver them too. Her grandfather says she has been dainty since she was little.
  • Anaoc sighs that he should not have sent Ancreta, and apologizes for the trouble. He heard the New Worlders use fish livers as fertilizer, so he is trying toad livers. He says a farmer must keep learning; that is how his farm grew.
What the Japanese, French and German versions say 5

Japanese

EN 'Ancreta, sentry at the Eyes, solicits assistance.' · 'Maybe ye'd care to fetch a liver or three for me? Ye can get 'em by slayin' the rivertoads what dwell 'round the Eyes.'

, 'Ancreta, on guard at Spectacles Rock, seems to be looking for an adventurer to do her a favour.' · 『眼鏡橋周辺にいる「リバートード」を倒して、「リバートードの肝」を3個集めてきてくれないか?』, 'Could you slay the rivertoads around Spectacles Bridge and bring me 3 rivertoad livers?'

The toads live by the bridge. Its two arches and their reflection in the water look like glasses.

Name origin

EN 'Show them to Ancreta at the Eyes.'

, 'Take them to Ancreta, who waits at Spectacles Rock.'

FR «Les Yeux», 'the eyes'

Take them to Ancreta, who is waiting for you at the Eyes.'

The rock's two hollows seem to watch passers-by. So Les Yeux and Die Augen see eyes where Japanese sees glasses.

French

Title

EN Cry Me a Liver

FR «Avoir les foies», 'Lily-Livered'

The slang «avoir les foies», 'to have the livers', means being scared. It fits Ancreta, who is too scared to touch the livers.

Nuance

EN 'Why, these are the livers I asked for!' · 'Maybe ye'd care to fetch a liver or three for me?'

FR «Salut jeunette/ot. Eh bien, voilà qui tombe bien !», 'Hello there, youngster. So my granddaughter sent you to bring me these livers, you say? Well, that's perfect timing!' · «Ça serait chic de votre part si vous pouviez aller en tuer quelques-unes et rassembler trois foies à ma place.», 'It would be nice of you if you could go kill a few and gather three livers for me.'

Anaoc says «jeunot», 'youngster', and the familiar «tu», like family. Ancreta keeps the polite «vous», as with a stranger, where English has one 'you'.

German

Title

EN Cry Me a Liver

DE „Her mit den Kröten“, 'cough up the toads'

„Kröten“, 'toads', is also slang for money. So the title also means 'hand over the cash!'

Accepting the quest

Ancreta

Me grandda's head of the Red Rooster Stead. Anaoc's his name.

He asked me to bring him some rivertoad livers, but the mere thought of pullin' slimy livers out o' slimy frogs gives me the shivers.

Maybe ye'd care to fetch a liver or three for me? Ye can get 'em by slayin' the rivertoads what dwell 'round the Eyes.

‘Could you slay the rivertoads around Spectacles Bridge and bring me 3 rivertoad livers?’

Report to Ancreta

Ancreta

Yer a lifesaver, 'venturer! Now, I'd take these livers to Grandda meself, but I can't just up an' leave me post. Not to mention the mere sight of those slimy things makes me stomach churn.

Would ye mind doin' the deliverin' in me stead? Find ol' Anaoc at the Red Rooster Stead, and ye can turn those rivertoad livers to gil.

Deliver the rivertoad livers to Anaoc at the Red Rooster Stead

Anaoc

I swear, this is the last time I send that granddaughter of mine to fetch rivertoad livers!

‘Hmm... But when is Ancreta going to get round to bringing me the livers of river toads that I asked her for?’ English vows never to send his granddaughter again; French wonders when Ancreta will bring the livers.
‘Where on earth is my granddaughter with the river toad livers...?’ English vows never to send his granddaughter again; German wonders where she is with the livers.
‘The "rivertoad livers" I asked my granddaughter Ancreta for — have they still not arrived...?’ English vows never to send his granddaughter again; Japanese wonders why the livers haven't arrived.

Why, these are the livers I asked for! I should've known better. Ancreta has been dainty since she was a wee lass. I regret any trouble we've caused you.

  • FR Eh bien, voilà qui tombe bien ! ‘Well, that comes at just the right time!’ French Anaoc is simply pleased at the timing; he neither calls Ancreta dainty nor apologises.

I heard that the New Worlders use fish livers as fertilizer, and so I thought I would give toad livers a try.

A farmer can't be afraid to try new things. Nay, he must grow his knowledge as he grows his crops.

That's how this farm grew to be what it is. You'd do well to stick around and see.

  • FR Autant te dire qu'on a beaucoup de travail. ‘I might as well tell you we have a lot of work.’ English credits trying new things for the farm's growth; French says there is a lot of work.
‘You have brought us another step forward.’ English credits trying new things for the farm's growth; German credits the hero with moving them forward.
‘Because of that, work is piling up.’ English credits trying new things for the farm's growth; Japanese says work is piling up.
