Hidden
Lore Mealvaan's Gate goes back about five hundred years, to Admiral Mealvaan. Mealvaan's advisor, the arcanist Ikuku, helped set it up. Since then, arcanists have worked there, judging the value of goods.
Lore Ask Sundhimal and you learn this. You pay gil when you leave from or arrive at an aetheryte. That gil goes to paying off a debt. Much of it was lent by certain businessmen from Ul'dah.
Lore For tax reasons, all cargo taken off ships must be checked at Mealvaan's Gate. So must the crews and passengers of ships in the docks.
Title reference The title has a double meaning. One is 'duty calls', as in something you must do. The other is customs duty, the tax that Mealvaan's Gate collects on every import.

Accepting the quest

P'tahjha

Here at Mealvaan's Gate, we inspect all the goods that are imported into Limsa Lominsa, and collect duty as the law requires. Some merchants, however, seek to evade this obligation, and we must chase them down.

I would be grateful if you could deliver these two ledgers─one to a man named Sundhimal, whom you will find at the Octant, and the other to a woman named Latisha, who works at the Bismarck.

If you are uncertain as to the whereabouts of the Bismarck, ask Sundhimal when you meet him, and he will point you in the right direction.

Deliver a log assessor's ledger to Sundhimal

Sundhimal

A ledger from Mealvaan's Gate, you say?

Yet more outstanding duty payments... When will those merchants ever learn? Very well, if I catch sight of any offenders, I shall drag them to the Gate, kicking and screaming if needs be.

‘I'll take care of reminding them if I spot them.’ English threatens to drag offenders to the Gate kicking and screaming; French only offers to remind them.
‘Fine, if I see one of the gentlemen on the list, I'll let you know.’ English threatens to drag offenders to the Gate kicking and screaming; German only offers to let you know.

One more ledger bound for the Bismarck, you say? Follow this path to the upper decks, and you'll find the place.

Deliver a log assessor's ledger to Latisha

Latisha

Tax evaders among our patrons, you say? Goodness me...

  • DE Eine Liste mit Zollschuldnern? Faustkampfmanager ... Wurstfabrikanten ... Abscheuliche Kerle. ‘A list of customs debtors? Boxing managers ... sausage makers ... Vile fellows.’ Latisha reads the debtors' trades with disgust. The English Latisha only gasps.
‘These people should be ashamed to think only of profit without fulfilling their duties to society!’ English reacts with a mild "Goodness me"; French scolds them as people who should be ashamed.
‘Not fulfilling their duty and greedily seeking only profit, what truly shameful people they are...’ English reacts with a mild "Goodness me"; Japanese condemns them as truly shameful people.
‘Bent only on their own profit, without being aware of their responsibility to society!’ German Latisha condemns the evaders as greedy and irresponsible; English Latisha only gasps in mild surprise.

I daresay this may well put an end to their appetite, but this is in the best interests of the city–state.

‘Our restaurant is renowned throughout Eorzea for its haute cuisine.’ English jokes the list may spoil their appetite but serves the city-state; French says the restaurant is famed for fine cuisine.
‘Anything else would go against the strict principles of the Bismarck, Eorzea's finest restaurant!’ English jokes about spoiling their appetite for the city-state's good; German says anything else breaks the Bismarck's strict principles.

If any of the merchants named in this ledger come to dine with us, I shall see that Mealvaan's Gate is notified without delay.
