  4. You have delivered both sets of spice samplers. Report back to Carvallain.
  5. In completing the task, you have endeared yourself to Carvallain. He reveals to you his ambitions to grow rich as a privateer, attacking and looting Garlean ships in the Admiral's name.
Hidden
Lore Many chefs shop at the Seventh Sage spice shop. But the shop also serves to hide the business of the Kraken's Arms.
Lore Carvallain was born heir to House Durendaire. Like every firstborn of Ishgard's High Houses, Carvallain walked a golden path.
Lore Carvallain jumped at the chance to escape the stuffy, narrow world of Ishgardian high culture. The way out was to join the pirate crew.
Easter egg Carvallain calls anything taken at sea 'spice'. It is one of his 'Carvallainisms'. Ginnade's 'spice' sampler is actually Garlean firesand, a powder that explodes.
Spoiler about later in the story

Foreshadowing Remember Othard, the far eastern continent that Lyngsath says is ruled by the empire. Also remember Carvallain, who somehow trades there. Both come back in a later expansion.

In-game text The item text of the Seventh Sage Sampler lists unusual spices, with instructions. That is 'not something you would expect from the captain of a band of bloodthirsty pirates'.
Title reference The title plays on James Bond's 'licence to kill'. Carvallain's crew also have official approval. But theirs is a licence to reave, which means to rob by force.
Characters 5
  • Ginnade

Ginnade is at the Coral Tower, headquarters of the Yellowjackets, who keep the peace in Limsa Lominsa.

What you know from earlier quests 1
    • #13 Lost and Found: Ginnade has made a list of missing people from citizens' reports and asks you to take it to N'delika, a colleague in Bulwark Hall. Ginnade's motto: protect the common folk, and they act as your eyes and ears.
  • Mordyn

Mordyn looks for adventurers who want coin, to work for the Kraken's Arms, one of Limsa Lominsa's greatest pirate crews.

  • Carvallain

Carvallain, captain of the Kraken's Arms, waits on the balcony above the Seventh Sage, a shop selling spices from the East.

  • Lyngsath

Lyngsath is the head chef of the Bismarck, who gets new samples from the Seventh Sage spice shop.

  • Merlwyb

What you know from earlier quests 2
    • #6 Edelweiss, Edelweiss: The Encyclopaedia Eorzea says Admiral Merlwyb gave an order that banned piracy. After that order, a group called the Upright Thieves became the Rogues' Guild.
    • #10 Close to Home: Murie says Admiral Merlwyb keeps several arcanists on her personal staff. Fearing their art would die out, as it passed only from master to chosen student, she ordered an official Arcanists' Guild and paid for research and training.
What happens in this quest spoilers for this quest
  • Ginnade sees that the 'spice' is Garlean firesand, an explosive powder, and may order some. Ginnade explains that Carvallain calls anything gained at sea 'spice', and that he is no pirate but a heavily armed trader for Lominsan interests in the East.
  • Mordyn offers you paid work with the crew and sends you up the steps to the balcony to meet Carvallain, their captain. Do right by Carvallain, Mordyn says, and the captain does right by you.
  • Carvallain is pleased with your deliveries. With the Admiral's blessing, his crew attacks and loots Garlean (imperial) ships, which he insists is legal; he hopes to grow rich this way. Born heir to an Ishgard noble house, he left that stiff world for piracy.
  • Lyngsath has never smelled anything like the new root, which grows in Othard. Since Othard is under imperial rule, Lyngsath wonders how Carvallain got it, but plans to cook something fresh and new with it.
What the Japanese and German versions say 6

Japanese

It is a parade of spirits from folk tales. People also use the phrase for a group of shady characters, which fits Carvallain's crew.

Name origin

EN 'If yer interested, take yerself up these 'ere steps to the balcony above, an' talk to Carvallain, our cap'n.'

, 'You'll hear about a sweet deal from Master Carvallain, boss of the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, one of Limsa Lominsa's three great pirate crews.'

The French keeps the kraken of the English Kraken's Arms. The German invents the Bekümmerte Klabauter, named after a sailors' water sprite.

EN Licensed to Reave · 'Last I 'eard, Othard was under imperial rule. 'Ow the seven 'ells did Carvallain manage to get 'old o' this?'

JA 「利にさとき海賊」, 'The Pirate with a Nose for Profit' · 「それにしても、カルヴァランって男は商才があるな。 , 'Still, that Carvallain fellow sure has a head for business. I mean, from what I hear, Othard is under Garlean occupation these days.'

Lyngsath backs up the title. The English has neither.

German

Name

EN 'Mordyn invites you to take on a job for the Kraken's Arms, one of Limsa Lominsa's greatest pirating crews.'

At the Herbs and Turnips, Mordyn told you about the leader of the Troubled Klabauters, one of the three big and powerful pirate crews of Limsa Lominsa.'

The name comes from the Klabautermann. This ship sprite warns sailors of danger and plays tricks.

Name

EN 'You have delivered both sets of spice samplers. Report back to Carvallain.'

Erstatte Carvallain auf der Terrasse des „Kraut und Rüben“ Bericht.», 'You have delivered the Herbs and Turnips bags. Report to Carvallain on the terrace of the Herbs and Turnips.' · „wie Kraut und Rüben“, 'all higgledy-piggledy'

The spice shop, the Seventh Sage in English, is named with an idiom for a total mess.

Different

EN 'I see you are not familiar with Carvallainisms. For the sake of convenience, he uses the word “spice” to refer to literally anything he has procured on the high seas.'

Alter Seefahrerbrauch.», 'But we call everything that comes in by sea “spice”. An old seafaring custom.'

Ginnade says 'we' and makes it a sailors' custom. In English, it is Carvallain's own habit.

Speak with Carvallain

Carvallain

Greetings, friend, and welcome to the Seventh Sage, purveyors of the finest spices from the East. All of our products are guaranteed obtained through completely legal means.

‘The ideal place to refresh my complexion.’ English presents the shop's fine eastern spices; German has him call the terrace ideal for refreshing his complexion.
‘You have come to help us sell our "oriental spices"?’ French captain already knows you came to work for him; English captain first greets you as a customer.

Oh, you do not seek spices, but employment? Well then, let us speak of how you might be of service to our organization.

Our Misery returned from her latest voyage bearing exotic spices never before seen in Eorzea. I have prepared two samplers, each of which I would have you deliver to certain individuals.

The first is for Ginnade, whom you will find at the Coral Tower. The second is for Master Lyngsath, the head chef of the Bismarck. And do make certain the right person gets the right set. Go now, and return here once you have accomplished the task.

‘But make sure you don't lose any of the bags!’ English warns to give each person the right set; German warns not to lose any of the bags.

Deliver a Seventh Sage sampler to Ginnade at the Coral Tower

Ginnade

Welcome to the headquarters of the Yellowjackets, the keepers of the peace in Limsa Lominsa. Is there aught I can assist you with?

A sample of spice courtesy of the Seventh Sage, you say? Hmmm... There is no mistake─this is firesand, and the kind used by the Garleans besides. Quite intriguing. Very well, we will consider placing an order.

‘For that, one or two uses would occur to me ...’ German officer muses he could find uses for it; English officer says they will consider ordering.

Oh? You thought that you had brought me spice? I see you are not familiar with Carvallainisms. For the sake of convenience, he uses the word “spice” to refer to literally anything he has procured on the high seas.

Alter Seefahrerbrauch. ‘But we call everything that comes in by sea “spice”. An old seafaring custom.’ Ginnade says 'we' and makes it a sailors' custom. In English, it is Carvallain's own habit.

Lest you worry, the man isn't engaged in any activity that is considered piracy. Far from it. Think of him as a trader─a heavily armed one─who represents Lominsan interests in eastern lands.

Deliver a Seventh Sage sampler to Lyngsath at the Barracks

Lyngsath

A new sample from the Seventh Sage? Alright, let's 'ave a whiff of it, then.

Hmmm... Ain't smelled nothin' like it afore. The note as came with it says it's a root what grows on Othard.

‘Aha ... The explanation says that the spice is a root vegetable from the Othard plain.’ English says the root grows on Othard; German says it comes from the Othard plain.

Last I 'eard, Othard was under imperial rule. 'Ow the seven 'ells did Carvallain manage to get 'old o' this?

Anyroad, I reckon I can cook up summat fresh an' new with it. Thanks fer the delivery, friend.

Speak with Carvallain

Carvallain

Welcome back. It would seem both samples were rather well received, and this is in no small part due to our affable courier.

'Tis unfortunate, but notoriety accumulated over the course of years does not fade overnight. There are many still who are hesitant to do business with savage pirates.

Yet the old days of piracy have passed, giving way to a new wave of opportunity. My crew and I have decided to embrace this wave.

‘We have received a letter of marque from Admiral Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn, which makes us privateers.’ English speaks of embracing a new wave of opportunity; French says they received a letter of marque from the admiral.
  • DE Aber seit Admiral Merlwyb uns Kaperbriefe ausstellt, ist unsere Arbeit ganz legal. ‘But since Admiral Merlwyb has been issuing us letters of marque, our work is entirely legal.’ English speaks of embracing a new wave of opportunity; German says the Admiral issues them letters of marque.
‘We are a lawful "armed merchant ship" that has received a "privateering license" from Admiral Merlwyb.’ English speaks of embracing a new wave of opportunity; Japanese says they hold a privateering license from Admiral Merlwyb.

With the Admiral's blessing, we engage in a form of trade with Garlean ships. Everything we do, you may rest assured, is within the law.

‘Our dealings with Garlean vessels may seem a bit aggressive, but it's for the good of Limsa Lominsa.’ English insists everything they do is within the law; French says it is for the good of Limsa Lominsa.
‘Only those do we board, entirely for the good of Limsa Lominsa.’ English insists everything they do is within the law; German says it is all for Limsa Lominsa's good.
‘This is what is called a way of life suited to the times.’ English insists everything they do is within the law; Japanese calls it a way of life suited to the times.
‘We are merely conducting somewhat rough "purchasing negotiations" with the ships of the Garlean Empire.’ Japanese jokes about 'somewhat rough purchasing negotiations'; English calls it 'a form of trade' within the law.
