Journal
- Lieutenant Mimio
is looking for a few good soldiers. - The member nations of the Eorzean Alliance do not see eye to eye in all matters. Nevertheless, their disagreements have not been irreconcilable─until now. Control of the Carteneau Flats is to be decided on the field of battle, and Lieutenant Mimio
would have you fight for the Immortal Flames. Speak with the Free Brigade flyer to learn more of this new conflict, and to decide if you wish to become involved. - Civilized violence. Civilized war. The concept seems contradictory, if not ludicrous, yet your fellow soldiers take no issue with this proposed resolution. It is clear now that the Immortal Flames will not be swayed from their course. You, however, are yet free to decide. To embrace this cause, or to renounce it─it is your choice.

Ah, )()())/> [name]. If you have a moment, I would discuss a matter most grave which concerns the Flames─and by extension, you.
Perchance you're familiar with the Battle of Carteneau? Countless Eorzeans and Garleans massacred by an elder primal, end of an era, and so forth? Good, good. For a moment, I feared you had been living in a cave for the past five years.
‘Exactly, I'm talking about the cursed area that five years ago became the sad center of the Seventh Catastrophe, when the troops of the Eorzean Alliance and the Garlean VIIth Legion clashed there while Dalamud was hurtling toward them.’ English jokes you might have lived in a cave for five years; German just states what happened five years ago.
‘Exactly, I'm talking about the cursed area that five years ago became the sad center of the Seventh Catastrophe, when the troops of the Eorzean Alliance and the Garlean VIIth Legion clashed there while Dalamud was hurtling toward them.’ English says the armies were massacred by an elder primal; German says they clashed while Dalamud hurtled toward them.
‘Yes, it's the site of the decisive battle between the Eorzean Alliance forces and the Imperial VIIth Legion, which became the center of the "Seventh Umbral Calamity" five years ago.’ English jokes you might have lived in a cave for five years; Japanese just states what happened five years ago.
Then surely you know that the Carteneau Flats, where the battle took place, is a hellish wasteland littered with the remnants of that fateful day.
‘Since then the heath has been a no man's land that no city-state rules over.’ English calls the Flats a hellish wasteland full of remnants; German calls it a no man's land ruled by no city.
‘The area had not been held by any city, but things have turned a bit dicey over the "ancient Allagan ruins" discovered there...’ English calls the Flats a hellish wasteland full of remnants; Japanese says no city had held the area.
Hardly anything of consequence to be found there now, eh? Certainly nothing worth protecting. And yet, in spite of that, the Eorzean Alliance continues to maintain a military presence in the region. Why do you suppose that is?
‘The general officers of the Immortals take a close interest in these remains, and have pressed the other cities to cede the territory to Ul'dah so that they can conduct research.’ English says nothing there is worth protecting; French says the Immortals' generals are keenly interested in the ruins.
‘The general officers of the Immortals take a close interest in these remains, and have pressed the other cities to cede the territory to Ul'dah so that they can conduct research.’ English says the Alliance keeps troops in the region; French says the Immortals pressed for the land to go to Ul'dah.
‘For the Legion of the Immortals, the ruins are of great importance.’ English says nothing there is worth protecting; German says the ruins matter greatly to the Immortals.
‘That is why it was decided to explore them and to enforce our claim to them against the other Grand Companies, by force if necessary.’ English says the Alliance keeps troops in the region; German says the Immortals will enforce their claim, by force if needed.
‘The top brass of our Immortal Flames apparently regard the ruins in question as important.’ English says nothing there is worth protecting; Japanese says the Flames' leaders consider the ruins important.
‘They asserted to each city their right to investigate and hold the ruins.’ English says the Alliance keeps troops in the region; Japanese says the Flames claimed the ruins before every city.
Because there is something there of consequence. Allagan ruins, to be precise. They were discovered following the Calamity, and Allied scholars have been studying them ever since.
‘Unfortunately, Gridania and Limsa Lominsa don't see it that way, and have each demanded that the place be granted to them.’ English says Alliance scholars have studied the ruins since; French says Gridania and Limsa Lominsa each demand the place.
‘However, Limsa Lominsa and Gridania also lay claim to it, which has led to tensions on the Carteneau heath.’ English says Alliance scholars have studied the ruins since; German says Limsa Lominsa and Gridania also claim them.
‘However, Limsa Lominsa and Gridania, fellow Alliance nations, have likewise started demanding the rights...’ English says Alliance scholars have studied the ruins since; Japanese says Limsa Lominsa and Gridania also demand them.
Three nations working in tandem for a greater good... It should come as no surprise that it would not last. You see, Ul'dah, Limsa Lominsa, and Gridania have all formally asserted a claim to the territory. Negotiations have thus far proved fruitless, and so we are to settle the dispute on the field of battle.
‘The leaders of each nation fear the conflict could spread and have signed an agreement giving Carteneau the status of a lawless zone.’ English says talks failed, so battle will decide; French says the leaders signed an agreement making Carteneau lawless.
‘At least an agreement could be reached that nothing that happens on the heath will be carried outside under any circumstances, so that our disputes do not fundamentally strain the otherwise friendly relations of the city-states.’ English says talks failed, so battle will decide; German says an agreement was reached to keep everything there contained.
‘So that this conflict would not crack the Alliance, the leaders of the three nations concluded a pact not to carry any problem arising there outside.’ English says talks failed, so battle will decide; Japanese says the leaders made a pact to keep problems contained there.
Oh, but do not misunderstand! We won't be going to war with our allies. Hostilities shall be confined to the disputed territories, and we shall fight to submission, not death.
‘The Carteneau heath was declared a lawless space, so to speak - and fierce battles are already being fought there.’ English reassures there will be no war with allies; German says fierce battles are already raging there.
‘The Carteneau heath was, so to speak, declared a lawless space - and fierce battles are already being fought there.’ English promises fighting only to submission, not death; German says the area was declared lawless.
‘And so the "Carteneau Flats" was designated an "Outlaw War Zone (Lawless War Zone)", and fierce fighting is still going on there now.’ English reassures there will be no war with allies; Japanese says fierce fighting is still going on there.
‘And so the "Carteneau Flats" was designated an "Outlaw War Zone (Lawless War Zone)", and fierce fighting is still going on there now.’ English promises fighting only to submission, not death; Japanese says it was declared a lawless war zone.
So there is no cause for concern, oh no. You won't be expected to kill your opponent─merely deprive him of the will to fight.
‘I would like to ask you to take part in the fighting at the Carteneau front, to secure the Allagan ruins for the Legion.’ English says you need not kill, only break the foe's will; German simply asks you to join the fighting.
‘The special mission I want to entrust to you is, in a word, taking part in this battle for the ruins.’ English says you need not kill, only break the foe's will; Japanese simply asks you to join the battle.
I say you, because the only reason I deign to share this information with you is because your company needs you, )()())/>. We'll be damned if we're going to let a foreign power lay claim to these ruins, and so we need every able-bodied soldier we can muster on the front line.
‘A special airship has been chartered to run between Ul'dah and the plain, if you decide to fight under our colors.’ English vows no foreign power will claim the ruins; French instead says a special airship was chartered.
‘Access to the Carteneau heath is currently strictly guarded, but an airship is ready to take you to the front by the shortest route.’ English vows no foreign power will claim the ruins; German instead says an airship stands ready.
‘You will travel by airship to the "Carteneau Flats", where entry is currently restricted.’ English vows no foreign power will claim the ruins; Japanese instead says you will travel by airship.
I expect you still have questions and concerns. Very well─speak with our man at the airship landing. He will tell you everything you need to know.
Speak with the Free Brigade flyer at the airship landing.
)()())/> [name]! Come to join the fight, have we? Very good, very good indeed!
Now before we proceed, I must warn you: this isn't going to be like some jaunt in the Wolves' Den.
‘The Immortals are currently seeking to seize the borderland ruins, in the south of the Carteneau plain.’ English warns it won't be like a jaunt in the Wolves' Den; French states the objective, the borderland ruins.
‘The mission objective is: to conquer and hold the outer ruins!’ English warns it won't be like a jaunt in the Wolves' Den; German states the objective, the outer ruins.
‘This time, what we aim to secure is the "Outer Ruins" in the southern part of the plain!’ English warns it won't be like a jaunt in the Wolves' Den; Japanese states the objective, the outer ruins.
You'll be pitted against wave after wave of fellow Alliance members in battle, and they won't care one whit that you're the Warrior of Light.
‘Our commanders believe that taking control of these remains will allow us to reach the main ruins a few malms to the north more easily.’ English warns of wave after wave of Alliance foes; French explains the ruins open the way to the main ruins.
‘Headquarters is convinced that control of the outer area will give us unhindered access to the central ruins a few malms to the north.’ English warns of wave after wave of Alliance foes; German explains the ruins open the way to the central ruins.
‘Headquarters apparently thinks that by seizing these ruins we might be able to control the defense systems of the "Central Ruins" a few malms to the north.’ English warns of wave after wave of Alliance foes; Japanese explains the ruins may control the central ruins' defenses.
This campaign will be long and brutal, and victories won today may be undone tomorrow. Consider the borderland ruins. We need only seize control of each ruin in the region, right? Wrong. Defense is paramount as well, for our rivals will muster forces to challenge our claims.
‘This operation is therefore crucial for getting our hands on the Allagan treasures hidden there.’ English warns the campaign will be long and gains may be lost; French calls it crucial for seizing Allagan treasures.
‘In other words: the success of the mission is the decisive first step toward later getting the treasures of the inner ruins into our hands!’ English warns the campaign will be long and gains may be lost; German calls it the first step to the treasures.
‘In other words, to obtain the ancient legacy sleeping in the Central Ruins, the success of this operation is indispensable!’ English warns the campaign will be long and gains may be lost; Japanese calls it essential for the ancient legacy.
It is for that reason we have established an airship route direct to the front line. Those who are ready and willing to fight will never want for transportation!
Ah, but that look on your face bespeaks confusion. “Are we at war or not? What is this bollocks about no killing? What in the seven hells is going on!?” That's what you're thinking, yes?
‘Show them no mercy, for they will show you none!!’ English jokes about the confusing no-killing rule; French orders you to show the enemy no mercy.
- DE Dort gibt es keine Gnade! ‘There is no mercy there!’ English jokes about the confusing no-killing rule; German warns there is no mercy there.
‘But that land is an "Outlaw War Zone" placed outside the law... even against allied nations, there is no need for mercy!’ English jokes about the confusing no-killing rule; Japanese says no mercy is needed even against allies.
It's less “war” and more “organized violence to resolve a territorial dispute.” And yes, it is to be civilized violence. Killing Alliance members is strictly prohibited─though accidents have been known to happen, mind you.
‘Our scouts have also told us that Allagan defensive devices sometimes appear near the Dalamud shard at the center of the ruins, and they attack anything that moves.’ English says killing Alliance members is banned, accidents aside; French warns of Allagan defenses that attack anything.
‘Be warned: eyewitnesses report strange war machines that come from the center of the Allagan ruins and join in the fighting.’ English says killing Alliance members is banned, accidents aside; German warns of strange war machines joining the fights.
‘Also, according to the scouts' reports, Allagan defense weapons are sometimes teleported in from the Dalamud fragment at the center of the ruins.’ English says killing Alliance members is banned, accidents aside; Japanese warns of Allagan defense weapons appearing.
But you of all people have nothing to fear! You've escaped certain death more times than I can count; what are the odds you'll fail to do so this time, eh?
‘Make sure you are well prepared before you leave!’ English jokes you have cheated death too often to fail now; French tells you to prepare well before leaving.
- DE Komm an Bord, sobald du zum Abflug bereit bist! ‘Come aboard as soon as you are ready for departure!’ English jokes you have cheated death too often to fail now; German tells you to board when ready.
‘As soon as you have checked all your equipment, please board immediately!’ English jokes you have cheated death too often to fail now; Japanese asks you to check your gear and board.
