Next: I Hereby Relieve You ›

Steps

  1. Slay the killer mantises.
  2. Report to Roehanth.
  3. Report to Falkbryda.
Journal
  1. Sergeant Roehanth has the cross-eyed look of a man threading a needle, and none can doubt that you are the stitch in time that saves nine.
  2. Killer mantises have spawned near the Founder's Crypt, and despite the Maelstrom's best efforts, several still roam free. You are bid to slay the remaining four.
  3. The last of the mantises are dead. One hopes they did not leave an egg sac or two behind. Make your report to Sergeant Roehanth.
  4. The dead may sleep without hearing the scrape of gristly scythe. Sergeant Roehanth is pleased. This task being Maelstrom business, you must take yourself to Commander Falkbryda at Camp Skull Valley for your pay.
  5. You report the destruction of the mantises to Commander Falkbryda, who appears to see new value in having an adventurer undertake such missions. A job well done is often a prelude to another.
Hidden
Easter egg The journal opens with the saying 'a stitch in time saves nine'. It means a small fix now stops bigger trouble later. Here, you are the stitch.
Easter egg The killer mantis is an old Final Fantasy monster. It is a giant insect with front legs like scythes. It has come back again and again in the series since Final Fantasy II.
Spoiler about later in the story

Foreshadowing Remember that Falkbryda is now interested in using adventurers. This interest leads straight into her next quest for you, I Hereby Relieve You.

Title reference The title is a pun on 'size extra large' (XL). It swaps size for scythe. The mantises you fight here are giant and have scythes for arms.
Characters 5
  • Falkbryda

Commander Falkbryda is at Camp Skull Valley. Her hunting parties have already killed most of a clutch of killer mantises.

What you know from earlier quests 3
    • #81 Mountains out of Molehills: S'nairoh says Commander Falkbryda threatened to cut her pay if she caused another false alarm. After the hedgemole mix-up, S'nairoh expects the commander to cut it.
    • #82 Walk of Shame: Falkbryda has heard of your help to the Maelstrom. She dislikes that S'nairoh did not come herself, but notes her report is honest. She calls boredom a soldier's worst enemy. She cuts S'nairoh's pay but writes no formal blame. Her name means 'Falcon Bride'.
    • #83 Nest We Forget: Dodos nest even inside the barracks, and she wants the nest gone before it draws dangerous beasts. She praises your speed. The camp guards against the kobolds of O'Ghomoro to the north; kobold skulls once lined the valley floor, giving its name.
  • Alyrloef

Alyrloef wants Roehanth back at the gate to test the new cannon.

What you know from earlier quests 1
    • #87 Flowers for Aerghaemr: Alyrloef finds Roehanth's visits to the crypt morbid, since he mourns people he never knew. He jokes about hitting him with the crypt's stone hourglass, then fears he insulted Althyk, god of time. He sends flowers to make peace with the gods.
  • Roehanth

Sergeant Roehanth is near the Founder's Crypt. Killer mantises, giant insects with scythe-like arms, still roam nearby after a missed hatching.

What you know from earlier quests 1
    • #87 Flowers for Aerghaemr: Roehanth welcomes your flowers. At the grave of Aerghaemr, a Halfstone farmer, he tells how Aerghaemr held a trail against the Sahagin so others could flee, even giving away his boots. A former pirate, Roehanth now wants to be more like him.
  • S'nairoh

What you know from earlier quests 3
    • #80 Keep Your Day Job: S'nairoh talks herself through arming the cannon while you fight; her partner C'mell is missing. The 'enemy' is only newborn puks, flying beasts that never threatened Aleport. She is let down: she joined the Maelstrom to fight, not to break up brawls.
    • #81 Mountains out of Molehills: S'nairoh mistakes harmless hedgemoles for an attack of adamantoises (giant tortoises) and must stand down again. She hopes to become an officer, but fears losing pay she spends on ale. Blaming too much ale-fed blood, she rushes off to be treated with leeches.
    • #82 Walk of Shame: S'nairoh asks you to carry her report to Commander Falkbryda at Camp Skull Valley. Too weak from leechings to go, she fears jail. Falkbryda says S'nairoh was once among the first promoted, but slipped at Aleport. Her pay is cut, without formal blame.
  • Ahldfoet

What you know from earlier quests 2
    • #84 On a Wing and a Prayer: Ahldfoet wants exactly five dusk bat wings as a lucky charm, kept secret from his superstitious crew. As a boy, trapped atop an old watchtower, he lived two weeks on three bats and ate one wing. He carries five wings on every voyage.
    • #85 Mummy Dearest: Ahldfoet promised a mother he met at a port to get her letter to her daughter, Wiltswys, at Camp Skull Valley. He speaks warmly of her tearful, tawny eyes and seems taken with her. He jokes that on land he is 'at sea'.
What happens in this quest spoilers for this quest
  • Falkbryda knows you well by now and thanks you for the camp. She praises Sergeant Roehanth's quick thinking. She worries that pests and beasts distract them from the war against the Sahagin. She seems to see new value in using adventurers.
  • Alyrloef does not appear. Roehanth mentions that Alyrloef set up the new cannon test, and fears he might blow himself to bits without Roehanth there.
  • Roehanth asks you to slay the last four mantises, since he wants no deaths near Aerghaemr's grave. Then he heads back to the gate for the cannon test, worried Alyrloef might blow himself up alone. Falkbryda praises his quick thinking.
What the Japanese and German versions say 3

Japanese

EN Scythe Extra Large

JA 「祈りは退治の後で」, 'Prayers After the Pest Control'

The title sums up your job. Roehanth has you kill the mantises by Aerghaemr's grave, so the dead can rest in peace.

EN 'An adventurer, are ye?'

JA 「貴公は冒険者なのであろう?」, 'You are an adventurer, I take it?'

Roehanth talks like a stiff, old-school officer. 貴公 is an old samurai-era 'you' for equals or juniors. The English gives him an ex-pirate's 'ye'.

German

Name

EN 'This task being Maelstrom business, you must take yourself to Commander Falkbryda at Camp Skull Valley for your pay.' · 'Sergeant Roehanth has the cross-eyed look of a man threading a needle, and none can doubt that you are the stitch in time that saves nine.'

Roehanth

An adventurer, are ye? Seems a shame for you to come all the way out here without more to show for it. How about a bit of vilekin hunting?

  • JA 貴公は冒険者なのであろう? ‘You are an adventurer, I take it?’ Roehanth talks like a stiff, old-school officer. 貴公 is an old samurai-era 'you' for equals or juniors. The English gives him an ex-pirate's 'ye'.

There's a few killer mantises about on account of a hatching we missed. The commander sent out hunting parties and collected ten and six heads. There's no more'n twenty in a clutch, think you can handle the last four?

  • DE Sie stellen eine Gefahr für den ganzen Friedhof dar. ‘They pose a danger to the whole cemetery.’ English says hunting parties already killed sixteen; German says the mantises endanger the whole cemetery.
  • JA そうだな、4匹ほどでいいだろう。 ‘Let's see, about four should do.’ English reckons exactly four remain of a clutch of twenty; Japanese says about four should be enough.

Report to Roehanth

Roehanth

Nasty critters, those killer mantises. I'm sure Aerghaemr wouldn't've wanted anyone dying near his resting place. Good hunting, adventurer.

  • DE Jetzt ist endlich Ruhe auf dem Friedhof eingekehrt. ‘Now peace has finally returned to the cemetery.’ English wishes you good hunting before the job; German thanks you as if the cemetery were already at peace.
  • JA ご苦労だったな、冒険者。 ‘Good work, adventurer.’ English wishes you good hunting before the job; Japanese thanks you for work already done.
  • DE Und die Besucher müssen nicht fürchten, sich gleich selber hier beerdigen lassen zu müssen. ‘And visitors need not fear having to get themselves buried here on the spot.’ German is a thank-you after the hunt, with a dark joke about visitors being buried on the spot.

Tsk, see the birds fly to their nests/how my shadow grows, it's time I returned to the gate. Alyrloef said we'd be testing a new cannon. Like to blow himself to bits without me about.

  • DE Erschrick nicht, wenn du das Donnern der Kanonen hörst! ‘Don't be startled if you hear the thunder of the cannons!’ English jokes Alyrloef might blow himself up without him; German tells you not to be startled by cannon thunder.
  • JA 急いでアリルーフのもとへ向かわねば。 ‘I must hurry to Alyrloef.’ English jokes Alyrloef might blow himself up without him; Japanese just says he must hurry to Alyrloef.
  • DE Heute steht ein Zielschießen mit den Haubitzen auf dem Programm. ‘Today target practice with the howitzers is on the programme.’ German: routine target practice with the howitzers, not a test of a new cannon.

You can collect your pay from Commander Falkbryda at Camp Skull Valley. Be well, adventurer. The Twelve go with ye.

Falkbryda

Ah, [name], you've become a familiar face about these parts. What brings you here today? The rest of the killer mantises? Well done, and I must commend Sergeant Roehanth for his quick thinking.

  • DE Vielen Dank für deine Arbeit im Camp Schädeltal. ‘Many thanks for your work in Camp Skull Valley.’ English credits Roehanth's quick thinking; German thanks you for your work at the camp.

Report to Falkbryda

Falkbryda

You have the thanks of this camp. Sometimes, I fear that we will lose the war against the Sahagin for having to deal with pests and beasts...

  • DE Der Mahlstrom könnte noch mehr von deinem Schlag gebrauchen. ‘The Maelstrom could use more of your kind.’ English fears pests may cost them the Sahagin war; German says the Maelstrom could use more like you.
  • JA 部下に代わって上官である私が労おう。 ‘In my subordinate's place, I, his superior officer, shall reward your efforts.’ Japanese: she simply rewards you on her subordinate's behalf; no fear of losing the war to pests.
