Journal
  1. Jacke's rogues have new information on the final missing treasure.
  2. Jacke calls a meeting to discuss the true nature of the enigmatic Black Sarcophagus. According to Perimu's investigation, the ominously named object is, in fact, an experimental explosive developed by the Garlean Empire. As the gathered rogues ponder the implications of their discovery, Lonwoerd interrupts to deliver a letter from their itinerant underworld contact. Travel to Thalaos in upper La Noscea, and seek out the black marketeer.
  3. Upon approaching the inert form of the dark-robed old man, you suddenly find yourself the target of an Executioner ambush. Though the odds are against you, your deadly rogue training eventually prevails. Wipe the blood from your blades and see what can be done for the black marketeer.
  4. The eccentric information broker has been murdered by the Executioners for his meddling. You learn from the lone pirate remaining at the scene that the captain of the Reformists plans to use the Black Sarcophagus to assassinate Admiral Bloefhiswyn. Speak with Jacke and discuss what can be done.
  5. While he is busy escorting his pirate prisoner back to the guild, Jacke asks that you share your revelations with the Yellowjackets. Head to the Foremast in middle La Noscea and speak with Captain Milala.
  6. Though she initially suspects you of harboring larcenous intentions, Milala nevertheless accepts the news of the impending assassination attempt at face value. Return to the Rogues' Guild and report to Jacke.
  7. Jacke appears relieved to hear of the Yellowjackets' immediate deployment. Master the use of your new trick, and join your fellow rogues in their efforts to reclaim the Black Sarcophagus...before it is too late.
Hidden
Easter egg 'Quarron' is old English thieves' cant for a body. When Jacke says pirates without the code would be 'adrift in an ocean o' quarrons', he means a sea of bodies.
Spoiler about later in the story

Foreshadowing Milala now wears the Silver Sorrows on her own ears. Remember where the earrings are kept.

Title reference The title is a pun on 'marked for death', where 'marked' means singled out for vengeance. Here the 'market' man is the black marketeer, whom the Executioners kill for his meddling.
Characters 5
  • Lonwoerd

Lonwoerd is at the guild, sorting the daily deliveries.

What you know from earlier quests 2
    • #6 Edelweiss, Edelweiss: Lonwoerd tells visitors without proper business to go away. He opens the Brugaire Consortium's gift of walnut bread, ginger cookies and sandwiches, and saves some for himself. He says the Sisters are always there if J'nasshym's boss needs them again.
    • #52 My First Daggers: Lonwoerd praises your courage and sends you inside to Jacke, the guild's master. Jacke calls him Lonny Left-patch and says his one eye is good at judging new recruits, even if he throws blades badly.

What you know from earlier quests 8
    • #52 My First Daggers: Jacke asks if you are a pirate, then explains the job. Rogues enforce an old code in Limsa's back alleys: never rob fellow Lominsans, cheat a crew, or trade people. He gives you daggers and says to dress light.
    • #53 Stabbers in Yer Fambles: Jacke sends you to fight lambs, rats and pugils, one at a time. He says a rogue is a dancer, not a butcher. Speed, precision and light gear matter more than force. He may have a job for you.
    • #54 A Dainty Dilemma: Jacke explains privateers: pirates licensed to loot only imperial ships. He pairs you with Underfoot to recover a stolen firing mechanism. The Dainty Demolishers mistake him for an errand boy. He then tells how the Upright Thieves became the Rogues' Guild.
    • #55 Stray into the Shadows: Jacke sends you after stolen muskets meant for the Yellowjackets, with V'kebbe as partner. He secretly ate her egg sandwich. When Underfoot gives him away, V'kebbe strings him up. He says real code breakers suffer far worse.
    • #78 Stifled Screams: Jacke takes a secret job from Maelstrom Command against the Jolly Merchants, pirate slavers. He says the code is harsh on those who hurt the weak. He works with you to free the captives in Aleport and teaches you to throw daggers.
    • #79 Slave to the Code: Jacke guesses the slavers hide at the Flock and fights them with you. He tells a freed boy not to be like him and explains the code. He resents Milala's challenge but accepts it, since the theft breaks the code. He teaches you Mug.
    • #113 Grinners in the Mist: Jacke complained about the contest, but the officials did not care, so he plays to win. With you and V'kebbe he raids the Curs' ship in the Doxy's Pull and takes the Cerulean Star. He stops Milala shooting the Curs and fears the Executioners.
    • #143 Sweet Sorrows: Jacke says the Reformists, a faction of the Bloody Executioners, hold the treasures, and he means to punish them for breaking the code. He tells V'kebbe he needs her and raids the deal, but Milala takes the earrings. He does not give up.
  • Perimu Haurimu

Perimu Haurimu, called Underfoot, has been looking into the Black Sarcophagus and brings what he found to Jacke's meeting.

What you know from earlier quests 5
    • #54 A Dainty Dilemma: Underfoot is reluctant to guide a new recruit but agrees. Jacke calls him one of the best. He teaches you to dodge, sends you to I'tolwann for news, watches the goblin camp, and lets you take the credit.
    • #55 Stray into the Shadows: Jacke sends Underfoot to fetch a fresh sandwich from the Bismarck, a restaurant. He returns and blurts out that Jacke ate a fellow rogue's supper. He calls V'kebbe's punishment the swiftest string-up he has seen.
    • #78 Stifled Screams: Underfoot is angry that pirates rob honest folk and trade in slaves. Jacke sends him with V'kebbe to help the Maelstrom find the villagers already sold.
    • #79 Slave to the Code: Perimu Haurimu, known as Underfoot, arrives at the Flock with V'kebbe as backup. He jokes that he is here to get underfoot, but no slavers are left standing. After Milala's challenge, he asks Jacke what comes next.
    • #113 Grinners in the Mist: Perimu Haurimu names the three treasures: the Cerulean Star, the Silver Sorrows and the Black Sarcophagus. He suspects the seized cargo is a decoy, pays a black marketeer he knows, and learns the Curs hide in the Doxy's Pull. Then he follows a new lead.
  • V'kebbe

V'kebbe joins Jacke's meeting about the Black Sarcophagus with the other rogues.

What you know from earlier quests 6
    • #54 A Dainty Dilemma: When the Dainty Demolishers barge into the guild, V'kebbe starts to explain that the doorman lets in only clients, recruits and one other sort. The captain cuts her off, and a fight starts.
    • #55 Stray into the Shadows: V'kebbe, the Stray, is the guild's best at sneaking. She teaches you to hide and listen, plans the theft at the pier, and leads the guards away. Learning Jacke ate her sandwich, she strings him up. Limsa is her home.
    • #78 Stifled Screams: Jacke sends V'kebbe and Underfoot to help the Maelstrom track the villagers already sold. She offers to join you and Jacke if you need extra hands.
    • #79 Slave to the Code: V'kebbe arrives with Perimu Haurimu to back you up at the Flock, but the slavers are already beaten. When Milala scolds the guild, V'kebbe is puzzled and asks Jacke what she wants with them.
    • #113 Grinners in the Mist: V'kebbe brings news that stolen cargo turned up at the La Thagran Checkpoint. She explains the Grinning Curs broke off from the Salthounds pirates. On the Curs' ship she finds the Cerulean Star, a large blue diamond, but not the other two treasures.
    • #143 Sweet Sorrows: V'kebbe fears a war with the Bloody Executioners and begs Jacke to quit. The guild took her in as a pirate stray, so she tries to steal the earrings alone to protect it. Jacke's words win her back, and she promises her blades.
  • Milala

Milala stands at her post at the Foremast in middle La Noscea, still guarding her side of the treasure challenge against the rogues.

What you know from earlier quests 4
    • #55 Stray into the Shadows: Milala is unhappy that the Yellowjackets now owe the Rogues' Guild a debt, and wishes the rogues were jailed next to the thieving pirates.
    • #79 Slave to the Code: Milala comes to lead the freed villagers to safety. She calls the rogues no better than pirates and wants all piracy gone. She challenges the guild to a race for three stolen treasures; if she wins, she seeks to close the guild.
    • #113 Grinners in the Mist: Milala orders every cart checked, but the Curs fool her with a decoy. At the docks she wants the Curs shot, and Jacke asks her to arrest them instead. She calls the rogues pirates and vows to claim the last two treasures.
    • #143 Sweet Sorrows: Milala buys news from the black marketeer through a disguised soldier. She takes the Silver Sorrows with the Admiral's order and arrests the Reformists' accountant. She swore on her sisters' graves to end piracy and vows to see the guild torn down.
What happens in this quest spoilers for this quest
  • Lonwoerd brings Jacke an urgent letter he found in the deliveries. It seems to come from the old man, the black marketeer, asking them to Thalaos. The letter is really an Executioner trap. Jacke calls him Lonny.
  • Jacke suspects the Reformists stole the bomb to use it, not sell it. An ambush at Thalaos shows they target the Admiral. He defends the code to a pirate, takes her prisoner, sends you to warn Milala, and decides to rally the rogues.
  • Perimu Haurimu: Perimu reveals the Black Sarcophagus is a Garlean prototype magitek mine, a bomb strong enough to destroy a behemoth. He knows the Curs gave it to the Reformists, but not where it is now. Jacke sends him and V'kebbe to find it.
  • V'kebbe now sees why the thalassocracy, Limsa Lominsa's government, bid so eagerly for the item at auction and kept its details secret. Jacke sends V'kebbe and Perimu to keep searching for the sarcophagus.
  • Milala first thinks you came to steal the Sorrows, earrings she wears. Hearing of the plot against the Admiral, she orders more sentries at once. She says the challenge still stands, but sends Jacke her thanks for the warning.

Accepting the quest

Jacke

I was wonderin' when ye'd show up, [name], but bugger me if ye don't look ready to mill an entire crew o' sods by yerself.

An' bene that ye are, 'cause we've finally uncovered some hard facts about that last treasure. Won't be long now afore we cloy the winnin' piece an' put this daft challenge to bed.

‘While you were training, I managed to determine the location of the Black Coffin, the last of the three treasures.’ English says they've found hard facts about the last treasure; French says he has pinpointed its location.
‘That's just as well, because the hunt for the all-deciding third treasure is going to be dangerous.’ English says they've found hard facts about the last treasure; German says the hunt for it will be dangerous.

All right. I've gathered the other coves for a meetin', so let's get down to it.

At long bloody last, the Black Sarcophagus has given up its secrets. ...Underfoot, ye've some news for us?

Perimu Haurimu

Aye, Jacke. I think half our troubles in whiddlin' the truth of it lay in callin' this nasty thing a “treasure.”

The Black Sarcophagus ain't no dimber bauble...it's the Mark LI magitek mine─a bleedin' prototype explosive what was bitten from an imperial transport vessel!

An' even though it ain't that big─maybe the size of a small cargo box─they say the blast'd have enough kick to incinerate a bloody behemoth.

Seems the Garleans meant to start production at their factory in La Noscea, then distribute the mines through Castrum Marinum. Lucky some plucky privateer cloyed the prototype en route, then, eh?

‘The Empire's scientists are working on it right now in their Noscean laboratory and are already planning to run tests somewhere on the high seas, under cover of maritime resupply.’ English says the mines were to be distributed through Castrum Marinum; French says sea trials were planned.
‘One can understand why the Garleans consider it a treasure, but for us, this bomb rhymes with slaughter!’ English calls it lucky a privateer stole it; French puns that "bombe" rhymes with "hécatombe".
‘The murderous box was built in great secrecy in La Noscea, and it was presumably meant to be tested on the high seas.’ English says the mines were to be distributed through Castrum Marinum; German says it was to be tested at sea.
  • JA …… ‘...Indeed, in a sense it really is a "hidden treasure", then.’ English calls it lucky a privateer stole it; Japanese quips it is a "hidden treasure" in a sense.

V'kebbe

An experimental weapon... That explains why the thalassocracy was so bleedin' eager to bid at that auction, an' so reluctant to share the details with us.

  • DE Falls sein Verwendungszweck überhaupt bekannt war. ‘If its purpose was even known at all.’ English says Limsa was reluctant to share the details; German wonders whether its purpose was even known.

Perimu Haurimu

At least now we know the “what”...but there's still the question of the “where.” The Curs delivered their bitten goods to the Reformists, that much is certain.

What happened to the sarcophagus after that, though, we ain't so sure. There've been no reports o' huge explosions or the like, so either the Executioners still have the mine, or they've peddled it to some other buyer...

Jacke

The Reformist faction came together out o' their shared hatred for the Admiral an' her ways. I'm guessin' they didn't cloy that bomb just to sell it...

Speak with Jacke at Thalaos.

Jacke

...What is it, Lonny?

Lonwoerd

A letter for ye, Jacke. Says it's urgent.

Jacke

A letter? Who's it from?

Lonwoerd

The old man. I found it while I was sortin' through our daily deliveries.

Jacke

Let's see now... Come to Thalaos. I have urgent news.

Perimu Haurimu

I've never known the old man to summon a customer! No one's seen him at his usual haunts for a while, so do ye reckon this's some rum morsel he's dug up just for us?

Jacke

Aye, it could be...

[name], you an' me are headed to Thalaos. Underfoot, V'kebbe, yer to take another stab at pinnin' down the location o' the sarcophagus.

You an' me'll head to Thalaos to see what the old man wants. I hope it's good news...but me gut is tellin' me otherwise.

‘I just hope the queasy feeling in the pit of my stomach comes from this morning's beans.’ English says his gut warns of bad news; German jokes he hopes his queasy stomach is from this morning's beans.

Yer done for, rogue!

Slice 'er/'im up!

Trustin' fool!

???: Yer wastin' yer time, darlin'. We opened that scrag's wrinkled throat bells ago.

Ye cross the Bloody Executioners, an' ye get what's comin' to ye.

...Did ye like our message? We wasn't sure ye'd fall for it, but a little mystery goes a long way, eh?

Aw, now don't be like that, darlin'. Me an' me mates didn't have much choice─when the boss says “go play wiv the rogues,” then we gotta go play wiv the rogues.

‘Of course we didn't need to be told twice.’ English claims they had little choice; German says they eagerly didn't need telling twice.

After all, we never asked ye to come ruin our game, now, did we? An' don't give me no long-winded speech about yer precious code...

‘If something breaks in the process, your jaw for example, you only have yourself to blame.’ English says the rogues came uninvited to ruin their game; German says a broken jaw would be your own fault.

The Reformists' vision stretches far beyond what them tired ol' rules is good for. Once Cap'n Aisibhir takes command o' the Executioners, 'e'll give us back the teeth we lost when we submitted to the Admiral's leash!

‘When the Progressistes finally take power within the Bourreaux and we revoke the pact those cowards made with the wretched Admiral, Aisibhir will be the most respected pirate in all of Hydaelyn!’ English says Aisibhir will give back the teeth lost to the Admiral; French says he'll be the most respected pirate.
  • DE Überhaupt, in Limsa stinkt es an allen Ecken und Enden! ‘Anyway, Limsa stinks at every turn!’ English boasts their vision outgrows the old rules; German complains that Limsa stinks everywhere.

We'll be the terrors of the sea once more! Free to rove an' plunder in a new age o' pirate glory!

...An' I'll bathe in blood to see that age come to pass! I'll kick down yer shite-stinkin' code, an' 'ave all yer sneaky 'eads on the choppin' block!

Jacke

???: Like hells you will! The only sentence what's bein' passed today is yers!

‘You have a loose tongue, executioner, but will you be as talkative facing two followers of the way of the twin blades?’ English puns that the only sentence passed today is hers; French asks if she'll still talk against two blades.
‘I wouldn't be so sure if I were you.’ English puns that the only sentence passed today is hers; German only says he wouldn't be so sure.

Well, 'ello there, darlin'. Ain't you a fine-lookin' lad?

  • FR Comment est-ce que... ‘Huh!? How did...’ English has her flirt over his looks; French has her merely shocked by his arrival.
  • DE Wo kommst du denn her? ‘Where did you come from?’ English has her flirt over his looks; German has her surprised, asking where he came from.
‘So there was still another rogue.’ English has her flirt over his looks; Japanese has her surprised that another rogue was there.

Jacke

I've heard all this prattle afore. Free to pillage an' plunder, is it? Aye, it all sounds grand, but ye don't think o' the price.

‘It's all very well to dream of pirates ruling the seas again and so on, but the sleeper must always wake up at some point.’ English says she ignores the price; French says every dreamer must wake up eventually.
‘You don't even seem to notice how ridiculous you're making yourself.’ English says she ignores the price; German says she doesn't see how ridiculous she looks.

That “shite-stinkin' code” is the only thing what keeps you bloody coves from millin' one another! Without it─without Limsa Lominsa to call home─ye'd be adrift in an ocean o' quarrons!

‘As for this code of honor you loathe so much, must I remind you that it is the soul and blood of the piracy you claim to defend?’ English says the code stops pirates killing each other; French calls it the soul and blood of piracy.
‘Are the Progressistes so ignorant that they don't even know their own history?’ English says without it they'd drift among corpses; French calls the Progressistes ignorant of their own history.
‘The very "code" you called dead is the soul of the pirates.’ English says the code stops pirates killing each other; Japanese calls it the pirates' soul.

...But if yer so keen to keep company with the dead, I'll be soddin' happy to oblige!

‘You don't deserve the name of pirates, you vile renegades!’ English threatens to send her to join the dead; French says they don't deserve to be called pirates.
‘Whoever denies the code has no right to call himself a pirate!’ English threatens to send her to join the dead; German says code-deniers can't call themselves pirates.
  • JA …… ‘...Anyone who tramples on it has no right to call themselves a pirate!’ English threatens to send her to join the dead; Japanese says those who trample the code can't call themselves pirates.

You was prettier wiv yer gob shut... But I can see I'm outta me depth, 'ere.

‘I've had enough of your sermons, you landlubber, but since you're afraid to face me on equal terms, I'll have to revise my plans.’ English has her admit she's outmatched; French has her accuse them of fearing a fair fight.
  • DE Sie kommt ohnehin zu spät. ‘It comes too late anyway.’ English has her admit she's outmatched; German has her say his lecture comes too late anyway.

As much as I'd like to lop off yer noggins, I'll 'ave to be satisfied wiv draggin' the two o' ye out into the wilds. Kept ye well outta the way, 'aven't I?

Jacke

...Out with it, then!

Gahahahahaha! Ain't it obvious? You stubborn scrags is lookin' to swipe our new toy, an' my job was to stall ye.

The cap'n 'as the mine wiv 'im right now. 'E's set to show the rest o' the Executioners that 'e's got the stones to sit in the leader's chair!

‘He'll take such good care of it that when he presses the red button, it'll make a big boom you'll remember even in the afterlife!’ English says Aisibhir will prove he's fit to lead; French jokes about a boom remembered in the afterlife.

...An' what better way to do that than executin' the bitch what snapped the chains on our crew!

‘The sea-woman unfortunately has to die for it, but she deserves no better.’ English calls the Admiral a bitch; German mocks her as the "Meerweib", the sea-woman.

Jacke

He's targetin' the Admiral herself!? ...Yer plannin' to blow up the command room, ain't ye?

Aye, you 'ave me permission to panic! 'Course, if ye'd rather steer clear o' the city, I'd be glad to keep ye company right 'ere, sweetmeat! Gahaha!

‘With a bit of luck, you'll arrive right on time to be blown to pieces all together!’ English offers to keep them company if they avoid the city; French jokes they'll arrive in time to explode together.

Jacke

Back to Thalaos, [name]. We ain't done with that cacklin' pirate mort just yet...

Think ye can stop Cap'n Aisibhir? If ye sprout yerself some wings, then ye might still make it! Gahaha!

‘The Progressistes' revolution is on the march!’ English mocks that they'd need wings to make it; French proclaims the Progressistes' revolution is underway.
‘He will free the Henkershorde from its muzzle.’ English mocks that they'd need wings to make it; German says he will free the crew from its muzzle.
‘We radicals are going to reform the Condemnation Party!’ English mocks that they'd need wings to make it; Japanese says their faction will reform the crew.

Jacke

We've got this mad mort at our mercy, but she seems to be enjoyin' herself... I'd better drag her back to the guild an' see what other information she'll spill.

I'll need you back in Limsa as well, but ye've business at the Foremast first. Ye should find Captain Milala at her post there.

‘The Yellowjackets' flashy woman should be there.’ English says Captain Milala; Japanese calls her the Yellowjackets' flashy woman.

Forget about the soddin' challenge an' tell her everythin' we know. Unless me judgment's well off-kilter, she'll do what needs to be done.

‘I really hope she'll listen to reason, but knowing her, nothing is less certain...’ English trusts she'll do what's needed; French doubts it, knowing her.

Have ye been to the Foremast yet? Well, ye'd best get yerself out to middle La Noscea on the bloody double! Milala needs to hear the Executioners' plans!

Speak with Milala at the Foremast.

Milala

Oh, you're one of Jacke's rogues. ...You've come to steal the Sorrows, have you!?

‘You've come to kill me to take back the Silver Tears, is that it?’ English accuses you of coming to steal the Sorrows; French accuses you of coming to kill her for them.

Well, you shan't have them. As you can see, they're safely clasped upon my very own─ Hm? You're not here for the earrings?

‘The Silver Tears never leave my earlobes now, so I hope for your sake you're as quick as a squirrel, because I warn you, I run very fast!’ English has her realize you're not after the earrings; French has her boast that she runs very fast.

...The Admiral, you say!? And you are sure these fiends are in possession of the sarcophagus? I must deploy more sentries at once!

Do not think this voids our challenge, rogue! And you can relay as much to your impudent guildmaster! ...I suppose you can thank him for the warning, as well.

Speak with Jacke at the Rogues' Guild.

Jacke

...So the 'Jackets are on the move? Bene. I've been listenin' to that addled pirate cackle since I got her back to the Sisters, but she's given us naught what we didn't already know.

An' we know more'n enough. I say we rally the rogues an' go after that mine...afore it blows up in our muns.
