Journal
- Quite thawed towards you after a wintry start, Wiltswys
is practically humming as she devises a new task for you to undertake. - Wiltswys
has a mind to send a bottle of lowland wine each to the captains of the two tidegates. First, take the wine to Captain Sthalrhet
at South Tidegate. - You deliver the wine and note the gratified, if slightly ribald, response. Which part to report to Wiltswys
is yours to decide. - Wiltswys
bids you take the second bottle to Captain Nortmoen
, brother to Sthalrhet
. Deliver the wine to the good captain at North Tidegate. - Captain Nortmoen
is taken with Wiltswys's
choice of the vintage, until the alchemy of sibling rivalry transmutes the mild approval into love that pits brother against brother. How will the capable Wiltswys handle the logistics of this bizarre triangle?

Foreshadowing The brothers' long fight goes on after this quest. At level 48 it returns in Sibling Rivalry, a fitting name. There, two 'perfectly equal' sets of food rations still start an argument.
Characters 6

Wiltswys, the quartermaster at Camp Skull Valley, has warmed up to you and is planning a new task.
What you know from earlier quests 2
- #85 Mummy Dearest: Wiltswys is thrilled by her mother's
letter, then furious: the mother who let her leave with nothing now wants money. She left her island for something better than farming and fishing, and refuses to reply. As a girl she was too poor for shoes. - #86 Toxic Avenger: Pleased you filled the vials, Wiltswys warms to you. The camp's foe is now the Sahagin, fish-like beastmen weak to poison, who destroyed the Halfstone settlement. With no home but this valley and no family but the Maelstrom, she fights for both.
- #85 Mummy Dearest: Wiltswys is thrilled by her mother's

Captain Sthalrhet commands South Tidegate, the gate that guards the narrow channel south of Camp Skull Valley.

Captain Nortmoen commands North Tidegate, the gate on the northern channel of Camp Skull Valley. He has no time for idlers.

What you know from earlier quests 3
- #80 Keep Your Day Job: S'nairoh talks herself through arming the cannon while you fight; her partner C'mell is missing. The 'enemy' is only newborn puks, flying beasts that never threatened Aleport. She is let down: she joined the Maelstrom to fight, not to break up brawls.
- #81 Mountains out of Molehills: S'nairoh mistakes harmless hedgemoles for an attack of adamantoises (giant tortoises) and must stand down again. She hopes to become an officer, but fears losing pay she spends on ale. Blaming too much ale-fed blood, she rushes off to be treated with leeches.
- #82 Walk of Shame: S'nairoh asks you to carry her report to Commander Falkbryda
at Camp Skull Valley. Too weak from leechings to go, she fears jail. Falkbryda says S'nairoh was once among the first promoted, but slipped at Aleport. Her pay is cut, without formal blame.

What you know from earlier quests 2
- #84 On a Wing and a Prayer: Ahldfoet wants exactly five
dusk bat wings as a lucky charm, kept secret from his superstitious crew. As a boy, trapped atop an old watchtower, he lived two weeks on three bats and ate one
wing. He carries five
wings on every voyage. - #85 Mummy Dearest: Ahldfoet promised a mother he met at a port to get her
letter to her daughter, Wiltswys
, at Camp Skull Valley. He speaks warmly of her tearful, tawny eyes and seems taken with her. He jokes that on land he is 'at sea'.
- #84 On a Wing and a Prayer: Ahldfoet wants exactly five

What you know from earlier quests 5
- #81 Mountains out of Molehills: S'nairoh
says Commander Falkbryda threatened to cut her pay if she caused another false alarm. After the hedgemole mix-up, S'nairoh expects the commander to cut it. - #82 Walk of Shame: Falkbryda has heard of your help to the Maelstrom. She dislikes that S'nairoh
did not come herself, but notes her report is honest. She calls boredom a soldier's worst enemy. She cuts S'nairoh's pay but writes no formal blame. Her name means 'Falcon Bride'. - #83 Nest We Forget: Dodos nest even inside the barracks, and she wants the nest gone before it draws dangerous beasts. She praises your speed. The camp guards against the kobolds of O'Ghomoro to the north; kobold skulls once lined the valley floor, giving its name.
- #88 Scythe Extra Large: Falkbryda knows you well by now and thanks you for the camp. She praises Sergeant Roehanth's
quick thinking. She worries that pests and beasts distract them from the war against the Sahagin. She seems to see new value in using adventurers. - #89 I Hereby Relieve You: She has a dispatch from Commodore Reyner
: an adventurer is taking over the Sastasha Seagrot work, and it is you. She is happy to pull her men out, since forces are spread too thin. She sends you to relieve Catguistl
.
- #81 Mountains out of Molehills: S'nairoh

What the Japanese, French and German versions say 7
Japanese
EN 'I have a brother, you heard about that? He's the captain of North Tidegate.'
JA 「北の防波壁にいるモテない馬鹿兄貴とは大違いだ!」, 'I'm nothing like my idiot big brother who can't get a girl over at North Tidegate!'
Sthalrhet's
words make Nortmoen
clearly the elder. The English never says which is older.
EN 'You know, didn't think I had a chance with a woman like that, but looks like she's sweet on me!'
JA 「はは~ん、やっぱ俺にホの字だな!」, 'Heh, so she's smitten with me after all!'
「ホの字」, 'the letter ho', is slang for being smitten. Ho is the first kana of 惚れる, 'to fall for someone'. The English 'sweet on me' drops the pun.
French
EN 'And must be a mind reader, for I've a supper of ocean cloud waiting that wants nothing more than a glass of lowland vintage.'
And it seems she read my mind, because I happen to have a plate of jellyfish sashimi that was just waiting for a glass of good wine.'
Nortmoen
says plainly what he will eat. The English only calls the dish 'ocean cloud'.
German
EN 'Please take the first bottle to Captain Sthalrhet
of South Tidegate.'
DE „Der Hauptmann des Südwalls ist Großsturmbootsmann Sthalrhet
.“, 'The captain of South Tidegate is grand storm boatswain Sthalrhet.'
Both tidegate captains hold this navy-style rank. Only their post makes them captains.
EN 'Like as peas in a pod, they say, but they never popped those peas out of the pod, if you take my meaning.'
geworfen.“, 'Boy, is my dumb brother going to be left gaping like an idiot! You see, he has his eye on Wiltswys.'
It means to be dumbfounded. Sthalrhet
gloats because Nortmoen
fancies Wiltswys
too. The English has no such gloat.
EN 'So...sent you over with a bottle just for me, huh?' · 'She's a quartermaster, doesn't he know this is a─a professional interest?'
Wen wundert's? Auf mich fliegen die Frauen.“, 'I knew Wiltswys was into me... Who's surprised? Women fall for me.' · „Der Arme hat sich in Wiltswys verknallt, obwohl sie doch nur Augen für mich hat.“, 'The poor guy has a crush on Wiltswys, even though she only has eyes for me.'
Nortmoen
is as vain as his brother. In English he calls Wiltswys's
gift purely professional.

Accepting the quest
Camp Skull Valley was built to hold against attacks from the sea. To the north and south lie narrow channels, with a tidegate each to hold the Sahagin at bay.
Will you deliver a bottle of lowland wine to the captains of North and South Tidegate? Call it a small privilege of the quartermaster.
Deliver wine to Captain Sthalrhet
A bottle of lowland from Sergeant Wiltswys
? Now isn't that something. And isn't she something─crisp yet full-bodied, is my guess. You know, didn't think I had a chance with a woman like that, but looks like she's sweet on me!
‘Heh, so she's smitten with me after all!’ 「ホの字」, 'the letter ho', is slang for being smitten. Ho is the first kana of 惚れる, 'to fall for someone'. The English 'sweet on me' drops the pun.
- FR C'est vraiment adorable. ‘That's really adorable.’ English jokes that she is crisp yet full-bodied, like the wine; French just calls the gift adorable.
Always was popular with the fairer sex, if I say so myself. I have a brother, you heard about that? He's the captain of North Tidegate. Like as peas in a pod, they say, but they never popped those peas out of the pod, if you take my meaning.
‘I'm nothing like my idiot big brother who can't get a girl over at North Tidegate!’ Sthalrhet's
words make Nortmoen
clearly the elder. The English never says which is older. - FR On ne s'entend pas très bien, lui et moi. ‘We don't get along very well, he and I.’ French plainly says the brothers don't get along; English makes a bawdy peas-in-a-pod joke instead.
geworfen. ‘He has his eye on Wiltswys
, you see.’ German: he says his "stupid brother" also fancies Wiltswys
and will be gutted; no peas-in-a-pod joke.
Wiltswys
, Wiltswys. Got a way about her, she does. Cool as spray, but there's fire there and welcome she is to show me the light and scorch off every stitch 'tween the two of us...
‘Sigh, Wiltswys-chan... That ill-starred, unlucky air of hers just gets me.’ A cutesy '-chan' is odd for a sergeant. Sthalrhet
finds Wiltswys's
gloomy look irresistible. - FR Elle me plaît bien... ‘I quite like her...’ English hints she may scorch off every stitch between them; French simply says he likes her.
- DE Bitte richte Wiltswys
meine besten Grüße aus. ‘Please give Wiltswys
my best regards.’ English admires the way she has about her; German asks you to pass on his best regards. ‘I'll enjoy the bottle at my leisure.’ English hints she may scorch off every stitch between them; German says he will enjoy the bottle in peace.
‘That air of hers, as if she's had little luck in life, is just irresistible.’ English says she is cool as spray with fire beneath; Japanese loves her ill-fated, unlucky air.
Report to Sergeant Wiltswys
Ah, there you are. Did Captain Sthalrhet
receive it well? The other bottle is for Captain Nortmoen
of North Tidegate.
I should have mentioned, they're brothers in blood as well as arms. You'd think them closer for it, but the bickering is well-nigh constant.
Deliver wine to Captain Nortmoen
Halt, adventurer! North Tidegate is no place for idlers.
- DE Oh, guten Abend/Tag, Abenteurerin/Abenteurer! ‘Oh, good evening/day, adventurer!’ English gruffly halts you as an idler; German greets you politely.
‘It's dangerous here, go home before you get hurt.’ English says North Tidegate is no place for idlers; Japanese warns it is dangerous and to leave before getting hurt.
Wiltswys
? The quartermaster, that mousy-looking girl? Still, she has excellent taste in wine. And must be a mind reader, for I've a supper of ocean cloud waiting that wants nothing more than a glass of lowland vintage.
‘And it seems she read my mind, because I happen to have a plate of jellyfish sashimi that was just waiting for a glass of good wine.’ Nortmoen
says plainly what he will eat. The English only calls the dish 'ocean cloud'. - DE Wie aufmerksam von ihr. ‘How thoughtful of her.’ German has no dismissive "mousy-looking girl"; he is simply pleased with her.
‘It goes excellently with my jellyfish steak, which I saved for this evening.’ German calls the dish a jellyfish steak; English names it "ocean cloud".
‘Ooh, how thoughtful of her!’ Japanese Nortmoen
is delighted from the start; English first dismisses her as mousy-looking. ‘Tonight I am having a drinking bout over my favourite, sashimi of floating jellyfish!’ Japanese names the dish floating-jellyfish sashimi, his favourite; English calls it "ocean cloud".
So...sent you over with a bottle just for me, huh? What? Sent one to that backbirth in South Tidegate too? Oh, you know what he's going to think now, that she's his for the taking, that strutting...!
Wen wundert's? Auf mich fliegen die Frauen. ‘I knew Wiltswys
was into me... Who's surprised? Women fall for me.’ Nortmoen
is as vain as his brother. In English he calls Wiltswys's
gift purely professional. - DE Auf mich fliegen die Frauen. ‘Women fall for me.’ English fumes that his brother got a bottle too; German boasts that women fall for him.
‘Oh man, I'm blushing.’ English fumes that his brother got a bottle too; Japanese just blushes, sure that she likes him.
‘Even so... Wiltswys
really does — me — heh heh heh...’ Japanese: he only gloats that she must like him; he never hears his brother got a bottle too.
Well, he's got another think coming, misunderstanding an innocent kindness like that. She's a quartermaster, doesn't he know this is a─a professional interest? That goatish fool! I won't have him bothering that lovely girl!
‘The poor guy has a crush on Wiltswys
, even though she only has eyes for me.’ - DE Na, Pech für ihn! ‘Well, tough luck for him!’ English vows to stop his brother bothering her; German just gloats that it is tough luck for him.
‘The one who'll make that girl happy is... me alone!’ English claims her kindness is a professional interest; Japanese says only he will make her happy.
‘Some good-for-nothing younger brother is trying to cut in, but I'll send him flying with my iron fist!’ English won't let his brother bother her; Japanese vows to knock his brother flying with his fist.
