Scholar quest, level 30. 162nd of 173 in play order.

Journal
- Murie
has knowledge of an intriguing opportunity. - Though marauders are not known for their academic pursuits, one such marauder named Alka Zolka
seeks an arcanist to assist him with his archaeological research. Should curiosity overwhelm you, he can be found at the Coral Tower in Limsa Lominsa. - Alka Zolka's
interest in history is a practical one, as he seeks to research the military tactics of Nym, an ancient civilization said to have repulsed would-be invaders time and time again. He had hoped that an arcanist might help analyze any text pertaining to magical arts─that is, if he were in possession of any texts to translate. Alas, the Nymian tablets he purchased were stolen en route to Limsa Lominsa. Journey to the Raincatcher Gully docks in eastern La Noscea, where he suspects the thieves may be found, and help him recover his stolen relics. - As predicted, the thieves and the relics were both found at the docks. However, Alka Zolka
had not anticipated the appearance of an otherworldly creature, one which seemingly burst forth from a crystal you found with the tablets. Hastily translating one of the tablets, Alka Zolka explains that the creature is a faerie, one which once served as the companion of a Nymian scholar. Ask the shocked marauder what he would like to do next. - Eager to discover what other secrets the tablets contain, Alka Zolka
quickly departs for Limsa Lominsa. Perhaps by the time you return to the Coral Tower, he will have learned something new. - Alka Zolka
explains that the crystal you found was the
Soul of the Scholar, and that with it, you can call upon the faerie at will. Reasoning that an experienced arcanist would be in a better position to preserve the lost arts, he decides to entrust the crystal to you. Do your utmost to gain mastery over your newfound powers as the marauder continues to decipher the ancient tablets. ※The next scholar quest will be available from Alka Zolka upon reaching level 35.

Murie knows of an interesting opportunity and asks if you care about history and the ways of the ancients.
What you know from earlier quests 2
- #4 Way of the Arcanist: Murie praises your choice and explains that the guildmaster cannot be reached for now. Murie sends you to Thubyrgeim
, the acting leader, whose mind is sharp and critical but whose manner is welcoming. - #10 Close to Home: Murie explains arcanima: using "arcane geometries", precise patterns, to shape aether into magic. It began with the math of the south sea isles. Admiral Merlwyb
ordered the guild founded so the art would not die out. Murie asks for your commitment.
- #4 Way of the Arcanist: Murie praises your choice and explains that the guildmaster cannot be reached for now. Murie sends you to Thubyrgeim

Alka Zolka is a refined, well-read marauder at the Marauders' Guild in Limsa Lominsa. He is looking for a skilled arcanist to help with his archaeological research.

What you know from earlier quests 9
- #4 Way of the Arcanist: Thubyrgeim says arcanima draws on aether, a living energy, lets you call a helper named Carbuncle, and needs calm thinking in battle. After a trial against pests, she welcomes you as an arcanist and gives you a hunting log. Her name means "Magic Jewel".
- #35 What's in the Box: Thubyrgeim reminds her arcanists to eat. Her guild inspects cargo at Mealvaan's Gate, so she sets you a practice cargo check. She calls K'lyhia
odd but the guild's best tactician, and hopes you can widen K'lyhia's view beyond arcanima. - #51 Tactical Planning: Thubyrgeim has you slay three roselings and three wild jackals, calling three the perfect sample size, then sends you with K'lyhia
. Pleased, she allows you to train at other guilds, but advises mastering arcanima first. Off duty, the twenty-nine-year-old teaches children to read. - #74 Topaz Teachings: Thubyrgeim notices you look tired and asks if you sleep properly, since reasoning suffers without rest. Each of her lessons starts with such a health check. She teaches you to summon Topaz Carbuncle, a magic ally, for use if the inspection turns sour.
- #75 Over the Rails: Thubyrgeim says the mercenaries are old hands at guarding K'lyhia
. She tells you the captain was the pirate Doesmaga
, exiled years ago, who has hurt K'lyhia before. She regrets sending her and urges you to turn your anger into training. - #109 Pincer Maneuver: Thubyrgeim tells you K'lyhia's
past: she was a young prisoner on Doesmaga's
slave ship, and the guildmaster calmed her with a grimoire (a magic book). Thubyrgeim leads the ambush, calling out K'lyhia's combat patterns, and says there is still something they can do. - #139 Grimoire Fandango: Thubyrgeim believes only the absent guildmaster can help K'lyhia
, as he did once before. She tells you his name, K'rhid Tia
, though he prefers not to use it. She is glad when K'lyhia recovers, and finds both her and the guildmaster hard to read. - #160 Sinking Doesmaga: Thubyrgeim takes the
satchel so the costume can go back to its owner. She is glad K'lyhia
is free of her past; seeing her suffer pained her. She credits you with bringing K'lyhia and the guildmaster together and gives you a new technique. - #161 Austerities of Flame: Thubyrgeim says the Sons of Saint Coinach asked for you by name, wanting an arcanist who has defeated Ifrit. Thubyrgeim wonders how they knew of your deeds, and sends you to Y'mhitra
at Apkallu Falls.

What you know from earlier quests 7
- #35 What's in the Box: Thubyrgeim
chose her to guide your training. K'lyhia loves calculations: she puts your odds of becoming a notable arcanist at 90%. Her worn starter grimoire (spellbook) was the absent guildmaster's gift; she rose to foreseer with it. Then she leaves to test tactics in battle. - #51 Tactical Planning: K'lyhia, a foreseer at Mealvaan's Gate, the city's customs, inspects the Boilstox, goblin peddlers suspected of smuggling. She plans tactics well but lacks the reflexes to use them. She teaches you to know your own strengths, and rates your chance of greatness 97%.
- #74 Topaz Teachings: K'lyhia checks merchant ships in Limsa Lominsa's ports daily for Mealvaan's Gate. She is about to board a ship suspected of smuggling and puts the odds of resistance at 75%. She requires you to learn Topaz Carbuncle first, and keeps asking until you agree.
- #75 Over the Rails: K'lyhia plans with odds and named tactics. Your skill reminds her of the guildmaster. You clear the pier and deck, but the captain, Doesmaga
, an exiled pirate who hurt her before, terrifies her. He throws her grimoire (spell book) overboard and she faints. - #109 Pincer Maneuver: K'lyhia was once a young prisoner of the pirate Doesmaga
. The guildmaster gave her the grimoire (spell book) she has always carried. She plans an ambush to win it back, but seawater has ruined it; she puts repair at 0%. Crushed, she goes home. - #139 Grimoire Fandango: K'lyhia's mind has gone silent in her sadness. She guesses that you met the guildmaster. His
new grimoire matches the first one he gave her, and she reads his message: shape reality as she wants. She resolves to defeat Doesmaga
and returns to duty. - #160 Sinking Doesmaga: K'lyhia's chain of trades gets you both onto Doesmaga's
ship, with her dressed as a dancer. She fights to cast off the shackles he put on her soul, and wins. Then she leaves to seek out the guildmaster, to understand the reality she wants.
- #35 What's in the Box: Thubyrgeim

Accepting the quest
Hmmm... [name], have you any interest in history? If so, I would share with you an opportunity to study the ways of the ancients.
‘It so happens that a strange fellow has lately been insisting that I introduce him to a skilled arcanist.’ English offers a chance to study the ancients; French says a strange fellow keeps pressing her for an arcanist.
- DE In letzter Zeit belästigt mich dieser merkwürdige Kerl. ‘Lately this strange guy has been bothering me.’ English offers a chance to study the ancients; German says a strange guy has been bothering her lately.
‘Actually, lately I have been pressed by a strange man to "introduce a skilled arcanist"...’ English offers a chance to study the ancients; Japanese says a strange man keeps pressing her for an arcanist.
A curiously refined and well-read marauder visited the guild the other day in the hopes he might meet an arcanist of exceptional skill.
He claims that the assistance of one such individual would be invaluable for the success of his archaeological research. I say “claims,” because despite his eloquence, the thought of a marauder with academic ambitions still strikes me as odd...
‘I don't know if he can be believed, but he assured me that the arcanist who helped him would gain just as much as he would from the discoveries made on that occasion...’ English says the help would serve his own research; French says the helping arcanist would gain as much as he would.
‘He also said that this investigation would also be of great use for the research of the arcanists.’ English says the help would serve his own research; German says the investigation would greatly benefit arcanists' research.
‘He said it was an investigation beneficial also to those who pursue arcanima, but whether that is really true...’ English says the help would serve his own research; Japanese says the investigation benefits arcanima scholars too.
You are, of course, free to formulate your own opinions. His name is Alka Zolka
, and he can be found at the Marauders' Guild should curiosity overwhelm you.
‘Coming from one of those brutes who swear only by force and their axe, I personally find it a bit hard to believe, but well, if this strange story interests you, just go to the marauders' guild and ask for the Lalafell who goes by the name of Alka Zolka
.’ English leaves you free to judge; French scorns marauders as brutes and says she can hardly believe him.
Speak with Alka Zolka
at the Marauders' Guild.
Thank you for setting aside your preconceptions, [name]. I am acutely aware how unusual it is for a marauder to “conduct research,” as it were.
‘Hi! Is it the arcanists' guild that sends you to see me?’ English thanks you for setting aside your preconceptions; French asks whether the arcanists' guild sent you.
- DE Hat dich etwa die Hermetikergilde geschickt? ‘Did the arcanists' guild send you, by any chance?’ English thanks you for setting aside your preconceptions; German asks whether the arcanists' guild sent you.
‘Are you perhaps the person sent from the "Arcanists' Guild"?’ English thanks you for setting aside your preconceptions; Japanese asks whether the arcanists' guild sent you.
However, you shall soon understand that I am not at all like my more muscular brethren. Rather than rush blindly into the enemy's maw, I formulate and execute stratagems to great effect.
My archaeological pursuits are but an extension of this practice, for at present I am researching the military tactics of ancient Nym.
'Twould not surprise me if you were unfamiliar with Nym. The civilization flourished some fifteen-odd centuries ago, during the Fifth Astral Era.
The Nymians lived during an age of wonders, when the magical arts flourished. But magicks can be wielded for weal or for woe, and this period of peace eventually gave way to the great War of the Magi.
The nations of that bygone era brought earth-shattering magicks to bear against one another. Yet Nym, with only a handful of mages to support its army of mariners, repulsed would-be invaders time and time again.
Precisely how a military force of this composition could defy its stronger neighbors is a mystery which has long puzzled military historians. By translating extant Nymian tablets which I have recently purchased, I mean to solve the riddle at long last.
As my knowledge of arcanima is cursory at best, I require an experienced arcanist to assist me with my analysis of any text pertaining to the magical arts. Will you be that arcanist, [name]?
‘If we managed to uncover the secret of their strength, what allowed them to protect their city, we would surely find something very useful both to the marauder that I am and to an arcanist like you.’ English says he needs an arcanist to analyze magical texts; French says the secret would benefit both him and an arcanist.
‘What exactly made this unit the strongest in the whole war is of the greatest interest both for a marauder like me and a mage like you, don't you think?’ English says he needs an arcanist to analyze magical texts; German says the secret interests both a marauder and a mage.
‘If we could learn the secret of that strength, don't you think it would benefit not only me, a marauder, but also you, a mage?’ English says he needs an arcanist to analyze magical texts; Japanese says the secret would benefit both him and a mage.
There is, however, a complication. The Nymian tablets and other assorted relics─for which I paid an exceedingly large amount of money─were stolen en route to Limsa Lominsa.
The information inscribed upon those tablets could be of untold significance! I will not allow thieves to sell it to some rich Ul'dahn collector for a pittance. Pray accompany me to the Raincatcher Gully docks and help me reclaim my relics. I have strong reason to believe the perpetrators can be found there.
We must have those tablets, [name]. Though I did not seek you out for your combat acumen, pray lend me your magicks this once.
Speak with Alka Zolka
in eastern La Noscea.
As I suspected. They are naught more than broken men who have seized the docks and taken to robbing every passing ship. Come, let us put an end to their banditry and take back what is ours!
‘I suggest that we set an ambush for the thieves here.’ English says the thieves have already seized the docks; French proposes ambushing the thieves here.
‘This is the spot where the gang of thieves lies in wait for unsuspecting passersby.’ English says they rob every passing ship; German says they ambush unsuspecting passersby.
- JA …… ‘...We'll lie in wait for the thieves here.’ English says the thieves have already seized the docks; Japanese plans to ambush the thieves here.
Speak with Alka Zolka
.
Faeries. Honest-to-gods faeries. Well, now I have seen everything!
‘I never would have thought we would discover the way to bring ancient military magic back to life!’ English marvels at real faeries; French marvels at bringing ancient military magic back to life.
‘You have actually brought back the magic power of the scholars, lost since ancient times!’ English marvels at real faeries; German marvels that you brought back the scholars' lost magic.
‘To think you would go and revive the ancient military magic!’ English marvels at real faeries; Japanese marvels at reviving ancient military magic.
Anyway, I shall return to the guild and begin translating the tablet. I cannot wait to see what other secrets it contains!
Defeat the bandits and reclaim the stolen relics!
I may have miscalculated...
‘Eurrrgh... I should have trained more with the axe... and spent less time with my nose in my books...’ English: he admits he miscalculated; French: he should have trained more with the axe and read less.
Do you see any others? No? Excellent! Now, help me search for the tablets!
Speak with Alka Zolka
at the Marauders' Guild.
Excellent timing, [name]. I have just finished transcribing a section which will doubtless be of interest to you.
According to the tablet, the crystal from which the faerie sprang forth is called the
Soul of the Scholar, and it contains the wisdom of those long-dead Nymian mages.
With it, you can call upon the faerie as you did before and bind her to your will.
As I said before, I have little knowledge of arcanima, so unless you have some objections, I would like to entrust the crystal to you. Oh, and you needn't recompense me─simply knowing that the lost arts are being preserved is enough.
- FR Comme tu m'as aidé à récupérer cette tablette, je pense que tu l'as bien mérité. ‘Since you helped me recover this tablet, I think you have earned it.’ English gives the crystal because he knows little arcanima; French gives it because you helped recover the tablet.
‘I give it to you as a thank-you, because you got the stone tablet back for me.’ English gives the crystal because he knows little arcanima; German gives it as thanks for recovering the tablet.
I shall devote my energies to deciphering the remaining text. Should I discover anything new, I promise that you will be the first to know.
Yes, yes! This is it! A treatise on Nymian military tactics, just as I had hoped!
...Hello there.
‘Oh! But where did this strange creature come from?’ English calmly greets the creature; French asks in surprise where this strange creature came from.
- DE Wer ist das? ‘W-What is happening? Who is that?’ English calmly greets the creature; German asks in alarm who that is.
‘Wh-what is this weird thing!?’ English calmly greets the creature; Japanese cries out asking what this weird thing is.
M-Mayhap the tablet can explain this...
Scholars...familiars...faeries!?
“The sunlight of Eos doth soothe and shield.”
“The moonlight of Selene doth silence and strengthen.”
