Journal
  1. Minfilia is wearing a wry smile. Might it have something to do with your newfound fame?
  2. It would seem your recent exploits have garnered the attention of all three of the Grand Companies of Eorzea. Now each one is intent upon adding you to its ranks, going so far as to send a representative to the Waking Sands to court you. Though Minfilia does not seem best pleased by this turn of events, she concedes that joining a Grand Company would yield certain benefits. But which one will you choose? That you might make an informed decision, she suggests that you attend the forthcoming remembrance services and listen to each Grand Company leader's address. Tataru will be able to furnish you with the particulars.
  3. Tataru has apprised you as to where the remembrance services are due to be held. Visit Mih Khetto's Amphitheatre in Gridania, the Royal Promenade in Ul'dah, and finally the Stateroom in Limsa Lominsa, and hear what the Grand Company leaders have to say.
  4. You have now attended all three of the remembrance services. Based on the words of the Grand Company leaders and the traveling twins, Alphinaud and Alisaie, it would appear that each of Eorzea's city–states is beset with problems. Clearly, all three would benefit from your aid, but which of them deserves it most? Make your way back to the Waking Sands, and share your thoughts with Minfilia.
  5. Minfilia confirms that all three city–states are sorely in need of assistance, and laments the fact that there is only one of you. A difficult choice awaits. Weigh your decision well, and give your answer to the officer of the Grand Company you would join.
Hidden
Lore The 'grandfather' Alisaie speaks of is Louisoix Leveilleur, the scholar who founded the Circle of Knowing. The twins never say his name in this quest.
Lore Raubahn prays that the fallen be 'Thal's honored guests'. Thal is the side of Nald'thal, Ul'dah's patron god, that watches over the souls of the dead.
Lore 'The Navigator' in Merlwyb's last line is Llymlaen, the sea goddess Lominsans pray to for safe voyages.
Lore When Kan-E-Senna speaks of 'the light of the Matron', she means Nophica, one of the Twelve gods and the patron of Gridania.
Spoiler about later in the story

Foreshadowing Remember that Alisaie does not agree with her brother's plan. She leaves to look for 'another way' on her own.

Accepting the quest

Behold, it is the Sultana Nanamo herself!

And Raubahn as well!

Raubahn

Hark you, souls of flame, drawn to the bosom of the desert, where the fire burns brightest and shall rage forevermore!

HURRAH!

RAUBAHN!

Raubahn

Where since antiquity, under the sage and judicious rule of the Ul Dynasty, we have wrought sand into gold!

Where by the Grace and Glory of Nald'thal have our brave sons and daughters flourished and prospered─I speak of Ul'dah!

Alphinaud

Self-assured Youth/Alphinaud: There, at the Flame General's back flies the Grand Company's standard.

‘Behind Director Raubahn... look at Ul'dah's national flag.’ English points to the Grand Company's standard; Japanese points to Ul'dah's national flag.

Self-assured Youth/Alphinaud: Note the sigil. The golden scales of order balance the jewel of prosperity with the flame of might.

Raubahn

Great and many are the gifts our nation has given the realm.

In Eorzea's darkest hour, on the killing fields of Carteneau, none spent more in blood and gold than we.

Thus was the VIIth Imperial Legion laid low!

Raaah!

Yaaah!

Alphinaud

Self-assured Youth/Alphinaud: So that's how it happened! How soon history forgets.

Raubahn

Yet many left our gates, never to return.

Let us pray for our absent brothers and sisters, that they might know happiness in the great beyond, as Thal's honored guests.

If the fates were fair, the price we paid that day would have bought us victory. Alas, they are not.

And now, but five years into this Seventh Umbral Era, the spirit of sacrifice which granted us our strength is all but dead.

Look around you. What do you see? A people divided, downtrodden and enthralled!

‘Refugees crowd at the city gates and misery is everywhere.’ English describes a people divided, downtrodden and enthralled; French describes refugees at the gates and misery everywhere.
  • DE Heimatlose suchen Zuflucht, Arme betteln um Almosen ... ‘The homeless seek refuge, the poor beg for alms...’ English describes a people divided, downtrodden and enthralled; German describes the homeless seeking refuge and the poor begging.
‘Refugees pour in, and the poor are everywhere.’ English describes a people divided, downtrodden and enthralled; Japanese describes refugees pouring in and the poor everywhere.

Where are the merciful alms of the rich? Where is the just steel of the righteous?

That's not really fair...

It is as he says.

Raubahn

I ask you: is this the great nation our brothers and sisters gave their lives to save?

You who call this “living” dishonor the name of the Immortal Flames─it is but a slow death!

‘Could you tell them with conviction that you have helped restore peace in the land?’ English accuses those who call this living of dishonoring the Flames; French asks if you could tell the fallen you helped restore peace.
‘Can we show them this Ul'dah and say: Look, for this you gave your lives?’ English accuses those who call this living of dishonoring the Flames; German asks if they could show the fallen today's Ul'dah.
‘To those who fell believing in Ul'dah and the Immortal Flames, can you proudly declare that thanks to them there is peace?’ English accuses those who call this living of dishonoring the Flames; Japanese asks if you can proudly tell the fallen there is peace.

Our enemies surround us. The savage hordes of the Amalj'aa wait beside our roads, strangling the lifelines of trade.

Meanwhile, the Garleans make mock of our borders, and despoil our land of its natural wealth.

We stand on a precipice...yet we do not act.

Whether trader or soldier, Monetarist or Royalist, all must recognize that a divided Ul'dah stands to fall.

‘I understand that one can be divided on political and economic questions, but whether Monetarist or Sultanist, we all want the prosperity of our country.’ English warns that a divided Ul'dah stands to fall; French says everyone wants the country's prosperity.
‘Whether trader or warrior, whether Republican or Royalist, we must recognize that Ul'dah is vulnerable as long as it is not united.’ English names the faction "Monetarist"; German calls it "Republican".
‘Both the Republicans, who want self-rule by merchants, and the Royalists, who swear loyalty to the royal house, surely both desire Ul'dah's prosperity.’ English warns that a divided Ul'dah stands to fall; Japanese says both factions surely want Ul'dah's prosperity.
‘Both the Republicans, who want self-rule by merchants, and the Royalists, who swear loyalty to the royal house, surely both desire Ul'dah's prosperity.’ English names the faction "Monetarist"; Japanese calls it the "Republicans".

Victory and Fortune walk hand in hand!

  • DE Auch ihr Abenteurer - ihr sucht doch in unserer goldenen Stadt euer Glück? ‘You adventurers too - you seek your fortune in our golden city, don't you?’ English proclaims that Victory and Fortune walk hand in hand; German asks adventurers if they seek their fortune in the golden city.
‘This national crisis is a chance to win and, at the same time, a chance to profit!’ English proclaims that Victory and Fortune walk hand in hand; Japanese calls the crisis a chance both to win and to profit.

Ye who seek glory and wealth! Look not to what little you can snatch from your neighbor, but to the boundless wealth of the world beyond!

Now is the time to unite! Now is the time to ride forth!

In the name of the sultana, I beseech you!

Line not your own coffers, but those of the Immortal Flames! Seek not to prosper from Ul'dah, but to restore her to prosperity!

As the realm prospers, so shall Ul'dah. As Ul'dah prospers, so shall her people!

Yah! For Ul'dah!

Together we are one!

  • DE Hab ich was von Zinsen gehört? ‘Did I hear something about interest?’ English cheers "Together we are one!"; German jokes about hearing of interest on money.

Raubahn

Your Grace.

Nanamo Ul Namo

Raubahn.

People of Ul'dah! I, Nanamo, seventeenth in the line of Ul, address you.

  • FR Nous n'aurons qu'une chose à dire. ‘We shall have but one thing to say.’ English has Nanamo introduce herself as seventeenth in the line of Ul; French has her say she has only one thing to say.

Much has been made of the wealth of Ul'dah.

‘What I have to say to you is simple, my faithful.’ English notes that much has been made of Ul'dah's wealth; German says what she has to say is simple.
‘I have but one thing to say.’ English notes that much has been made of Ul'dah's wealth; Japanese says she has only one thing to say.

Yet those who measure that wealth in coins and carats are gravely deceived.

For the true wealth of Ul'dah lies in the health, happiness, and hopes of her people.

‘Your knowledge, your courage, your generosity and your smile are what we hold most precious.’ English lists the people's health, happiness and hopes; French lists knowledge, courage, generosity and smiles.

Long live Nanamo!

Glory to the sultana!

Raubahn

For Victory and Fortune, stride fearless into the inferno, for we are by fire reborn!

  • FR Pour Sa Grâce Nanamo Ul Namo ! ‘For Her Grace Nanamo Ul Namo!’ English urges striding fearless into the inferno, reborn by fire; French instead cries for Nanamo and the glory of Ul'dah.
‘Victory and defeat are divided by quickness and speed!’ English urges striding fearless into the inferno, reborn by fire; Japanese says speed decides victory and defeat.

Forsooth!

The time is now!

I believe!

Alphinaud

If you'll permit me. Alphinaud.

...And my sister, Alisaie, at your service.

I saw at a glance that you were a fellow traveler.

You might call us students of history, sampling the realm's remembrances in pursuit of...enlightenment.

Fancy meeting you again.

I lost my son to the Calamity...

Some say you couldn't take a step without stumbling over a body.

The three Seedseers are all together!

Kan-E-Senna

Our forebears were once strangers in the Twelveswood.

Fearful of the greenwrath, they hid themselves in the dark recesses of the earth. Yet they dreamed of basking in the dappled sunlight of the forest.

Through great effort, they proved their worth to the elementals, and were granted a place beneath the boughs. So it was that Gridania was born, some five centuries ago.

Working hand in hand, the Hyur and the Elezen settlers sowed the seeds of our civilization. And soon they were joined by folk of all races.

‘Now even the Moon Keepers, though few, have come to live in the city and walk alongside us.’ English says folk of all races soon joined them; Japanese says even a few Moon Keepers now live in the city.

So nourished by the waters of unity and blessed by the light of the Matron, Gridania flourished into the great nation it is today.

Alphinaud

Self-assured Youth/Alphinaud: Do you see the Gridanian standard? There, hanging behind the Elder Seedseer.

Self-assured Youth/Alphinaud: The entwined serpents represent the unity between Hyur and Elezen. An elegant symbol, do you not agree?

Kan-E-Senna

In accordance with the will of the elementals, we have embraced a life of peace. Alas, our neighbors have not always sought the same for themselves─nor for us.

Though we Gridanians have no love for war, we have still less for those who would threaten our way of life. Ever have we fought to protect the sanctity of the Twelveswood.

When the Garlean Empire brought its war of conquest to Eorzea, we rallied under the noble standard of the Twin Adder, that we might push back the encroaching darkness.

And it was we who prepared the ground for the reformation of the Eorzean Alliance, that all the peoples of this realm might stand united against the common threat.

‘The three city-states joined together - into the Eorzean Alliance.’ English credits Gridania with preparing the Alliance's reformation; German simply says the three city-states joined together.

Five years ago, the Alliance met the armies of the Empire upon the fields of Carteneau.

It would prove the bloodiest battle in recent memory. Countless Gridanian lives were lost.

As supreme commander of the Order of the Twin Adder, ever shall I bear the weight of our people's sacrifice.

Alas, their loss was not the only tragedy to befall us that day, for soon came the Calamity.

The scars borne by our forest are a constant reminder of its violence. Our lives have been irrevocably changed, each waking hour a struggle to survive.

‘Precisely at a time like this, we must all join hands.’ English says each waking hour is a struggle to survive; Japanese says now, of all times, everyone must join hands.

Driven to desperation, some among us have strayed from the path of righteousness, resorting to banditry, poaching, and other unconscionable deeds.

To compound our woes, the Ixal have returned in force, emboldened by our suffering. They test our defenses nigh without cease, and prey upon the vulnerable.

‘They damage the forest and rob it of its strength.’ English says the Ixal test their defenses and prey on the vulnerable; German says they damage the forest and rob its strength.
‘And our sworn enemies, the Ixal, keep invading the forest as ever, stealing nature's bounty and disturbing the hearts of the elementals.’ English says the Ixal test their defenses and prey on the vulnerable; Japanese says they steal nature's bounty and disturb the elementals.

So beleaguered from within and without, it is of little wonder that our unity now falters. Dark times are upon us.

  • DE Niemand hier trauert alleine. ‘But remember: no one here grieves alone.’ English says their unity now falters; German says no one here grieves alone.

Time was a man could walk the highroads without fear.

‘It's true that the divine arrows are overwhelmed.’ English recalls when the highroads were safe to walk; French says the «flèches divines» are overwhelmed.
‘We are alone because Nophica's host leaves us standing in the rain!’ English recalls when the highroads were safe to walk; German complains that Nophica's host leaves them in the lurch.
‘Indeed, the divine valor corps...’ English recalls when the highroads were safe to walk; Japanese instead begins a remark about the divine valor corps.

A pox on the bloody Ixal!

‘The dark watchmen are constantly on the alert.’ English curses the Ixal; French says the «vigiles sombres» are constantly on alert.
‘If the Wailing Regiment did its duty...!’ English curses the Ixal; German complains that the Klageregiment is not doing its duty.
  • JA 鬼哭隊…… ‘The wailing-demon corps... on a subjugation...’ English curses the Ixal; Japanese trails off about the wailing-demon corps and a subjugation.

Kan-E-Senna

On this day, five years ago, countless Eorzeans laid down their lives that we might behold another dawn. Please join with me in honoring their memory.

Alisaie

Cynical Girl/Alisaie: And how do you propose to honor the memory of those you cannot remember, pray tell?

Kan-E-Senna

The destruction wrought by the Calamity was indiscriminate─it dealt death to Eorzean and Garlean alike.

‘Unfortunately, the conflict between us and the empire of Garlemald is not yet over.’ English says the Calamity killed Eorzeans and Garleans alike; French says the conflict with Garlemald is not over.
‘But we must also look ahead, for we still have a long, hard fight before us.’ English says the Calamity killed Eorzeans and Garleans alike; German says a long, hard fight still lies ahead.
‘However, the war with the Garlean Empire still continues!’ English says the Calamity killed Eorzeans and Garleans alike; Japanese says the war with the Garlean Empire continues.

Yet while we have labored to rebuild our homes─to rebuild our lives─the Empire has set about raising steel fortresses here in the Twelveswood.

‘It is still too early, alone we are too weak.’ English contrasts their rebuilding with the Empire's fortresses; German says it is too early and they are too weak alone.

Let none be mistaken─the Garleans remain the greatest threat to our survival. If we are to stand against them, we must remember what it is to be united.

‘For we will not be powerless much longer!’ English calls the Garleans the greatest threat to survival; German says they will not be powerless much longer.

Our many troubles blind us to the woes of our fellow man. Thence is harmony lost. Yet harmony is the founding principle of Gridania.

‘Patience is a virtue, but this time it would be our downfall.’ English calls harmony Gridania's founding principle; German says patience, though a virtue, would now be their downfall.

‘For this is the will of the Masters!’ English calls for healing the forest for their descendants; German declares this is the will of the Gebieter.

We must think of the children!

Wood's Will Be Done!

It's up to us to protect the forest!

For the elementals!

Alphinaud

If you'll permit me. Alphinaud.

...And my sister, Alisaie, at your service.

I saw at a glance that you were a fellow traveler.

You might call us students of history, sampling the realm's remembrances in pursuit of...enlightenment.

Fancy meeting you again.

The Garleans are another matter altogether.

  • FR Sans elle, nous étions perdus. ‘Without her, we were lost.’ English says the Garleans are another matter; French says "without her, we were lost".

So much for our alliance.

It's sunk beyond the seabed.

Merlwyb

Brothers and sisters of the sea, hearken unto me! Look upon this, our mighty crimson standard, and tell me your hearts do not swell with pride!

Yaaaaaargh!

Merlwyb

Seven hundred summers have come and gone since our forefathers first ran aground in this fertile bay.

In that time, guided by the Mother of Oceans, Limsa Lominsa has grown from humble fishing village to uncontested ruler of the five seas and beyond!

‘All of us, guided by Llymlaen, god of oceans and navigation, have lived as people of the sea!’ English says Limsa grew from a fishing village to ruler of the seas; Japanese says they have lived as people of the sea.

Huzzah!

Raaaaaarrr!

Alphinaud

Self-assured Youth/Alphinaud: Did you look, as the Admiral bid you? It is a rather stirring standard, I must say.

Self-assured Youth/Alphinaud: The crimson field is meant to signify the blood of fallen crewmates, while the black longship represents a pirate vessel.

Merlwyb

When the Garlean Empire marched upon Eorzea, we assembled beneath the Maelstrom's standard, and our Grand Company was reborn.

‘The Maelstrom's fleet knows well how to protect this city, even though ever new spawn of the Seven Hells assail us.’ English says the Maelstrom was reborn against the Garlean invasion; German says its fleet protects the city from hellspawn.

‘And with the signing of the Galadion Accord, we fought side by side with Hyllfyr and his pirates against the oppressor at the battle of Carteneau.’ English says all answered the call; French says they fought beside Hyllfyr's pirates after signing the Galadion Accord.

That day, the world bore witness to the united strength of Limsa Lominsa!

I swear to you─no army ever fought harder, or with more courage. Yet many of ours did not survive.

Merlwyb

It has been five long years since the Calamity struck. Five long years of tireless rebuilding.

Yet still the wounds of the Calamity fester and weep.

But when I stand atop the Mizzenmast, and gaze out upon our battered and broken vessel, I see an undying spirit. Did we not build all this from the wreck of the Galadion all those centuries ago? Shall we not do so again!?

‘Amid all this, Limsa Lominsa shines more than ever before and has been restored into a city worthy of the name "Llymlaen's Veil"!’ English sees a battered, broken vessel with an undying spirit; Japanese says Limsa shines brighter than ever.

Yet there are those who would see this ship of ours sink beneath the waves of the restless Rhotano.

The Sahagin creep ashore seeking blood for their accursed god.

‘The Sahagin have finally come out of the depths to conquer dry land.’ English says they come seeking blood for their accursed god; French says they come to conquer dry land.

The Sahagin have risen?

Merlwyb

While the mines of O'Ghomoro spew forth kobolds who push ever south, despoiling our lands as they go.

We are well-nigh surrounded. Yet there are those among us who would rather turn their swords against their crewmates than our cannons against our foes.

‘We are surrounded by three enemies, Limsans, and on top of that worn out by the fight against piracy!’ English says some would rather fight their own crewmates; German says they are worn out by fighting piracy.

There is but one course left to us!

One bearing that will bring us victory over the beast hordes and the Empire both, and see this ship safe to port.

We must mend the rift the Calamity has reopened 'twixt pirate and Maelstrom, and stand fast with our adventurer brothers against the coming tempest!

  • DE Der Mahlstrom braucht Hilfe, zu Land und zu Wasser. ‘The Maelstrom needs help, on land and at sea.’ English calls for mending the rift between pirates and Maelstrom; German only says the Maelstrom needs help on land and sea.

Alphinaud

If you'll permit me. Alphinaud.

...And my sister, Alisaie, at your service.

I saw at a glance that you were a fellow traveler.

‘We are traveling through the great city-states to attend the remembrance ceremonies in honor of those who died at the battle of Carteneau.’ English remarks that the listener is a fellow traveler; French explains the twins tour the city-states to attend the ceremonies.

You might call us students of history, sampling the realm's remembrances in pursuit of...enlightenment.

Fancy meeting you again.

The gods only know what “grand” company our adventurer friend will keep.

Hmph. The wheels of change are in motion regardless.

Alisaie

Brother, are you certain this course is best?

Alphinaud

Whatever do you mean, dear sister?

Alisaie

The so-called “remembrance” ceremonies were little more than standard-waving rallies.

‘The city-states are only concerned with their own problems.’ English calls the ceremonies standard-waving rallies; German says the city-states care only about their own problems.

...As though the Calamity and Seventh Umbral Era warranted scarcely a mention!

Alphinaud

Well, of course they were “standard-waving rallies.”

Since you are so observant, mayhap you noticed what mention was made of the Warriors of Light? None.

I suppose they must have forgotten the heroes who spared Eorzea a fate worse than the Calamity?

‘Yet they are the true heroes who saved Eorzea from the Seventh Calamity.’ English says the heroes spared Eorzea a fate worse than the Calamity; French says they saved Eorzea from the Calamity itself.

No, dear Alisaie, they haven't “forgotten” these details. They have elected to omit them.

Deep are the wounds the Calamity inflicted upon Eorzea. So deep, in fact, that the realm still bleeds.

‘The Calamity tore deep wounds in Eorzea, but the states are already on their way into the future.’ English says the realm still bleeds; German says the states are already moving toward the future.
‘Even so, every nation has begun walking toward tomorrow.’ English says the realm still bleeds; Japanese says every nation has started walking toward tomorrow.

Needless to say, the beast tribes and their primals do little to alleviate the pain.

So the task of salving Eorzea's wounds falls to the Scions of the Seventh Dawn─with a little help from our friends the Grand Companies.

‘But the Grand Companies and the Scions of the Seventh Dawn are the key to all these problems.’ English speaks of salving Eorzea's wounds; German calls the Grand Companies and Scions the key to the problems.
‘They are the "key" that solves those problems.’ English speaks of salving Eorzea's wounds; Japanese calls the Grand Companies and Scions the key that solves the problems.

Remembrance will yield no remedy. If our world is to heal, we must put the horrors of the Calamity behind us.

Alisaie

Our grandfather would never entrust the fate of the realm to despots who rewrite history to their convenience!

‘But then we forget what Grandfather sacrificed himself for!’ English says their grandfather would never trust such despots; German says they would forget what Grandfather sacrificed himself for.

There must be another way to cure what ails this world─and I mean to find it!

Alphinaud

You are most welcome to try. Our paths may differ, but our destination is the same. In time, I daresay we will see eye to eye.

Alisaie

I should hope so.

M-M'lady!

We are to escort you!

Alphinaud

Hope does not come into it. We share the burden of this fate, dear sister, and will prevail together or not at all.

The salve will serve not only to close up our present wounds...

‘Not all truths are good to hear.’ English says the salve closes present wounds; French says not all truths are good to hear.

...but prevent old ones from opening anew.

Minfilia

Until not so very long ago, you were but one of the many adventurers seeking to make their way in Eorzea.

But for your character and courage, you were raised to the esteemed post of envoy. Thereafter, you traveled the realm, aiding those in need without thought of reward, confirming to Y'shtolaYda and PapalymoThancred that the Scions would benefit from your aid. And no sooner had you joined us than you personally bested the primal Ifrit.

You have achieved a great deal in a short time, and won fame in so doing. Alas, fame does not come without a price, as you will soon discover.

‘Do you understand what these actions mean on the scale of Eorzea?’ English warns that fame comes at a price; French asks whether you grasp what your actions mean for Eorzea.

Serpent officer

I am given to understand that the Scions of the Seventh Dawn have but recently welcomed a new hero into their midst!

Storm officer

I am here on behalf of the Maelstrom, Grand Company of Limsa Lominsa, to offer said hero a place of honor within our ranks!

Minfilia

As you can see, [name], your recent exploits have garnered you the attentions of the Grand Companies of Eorzea.

Each organization would have Ifrit's bane for its own. To this end, all three have sent officers to court you.

‘If you join one of the Grand Companies, you will gain access to high-quality equipment and other resources.’ English says each company wants Ifrit's bane for itself; German lists the equipment and resources you gain by joining.

They would not ordinarily go to such lengths to enlist a new recruit. That they have is evidence of their high regard for you.

‘All it takes is for a rumor to spread for them to rush in, as you can see.’ English says such effort is unusual and shows high regard; French says they rush in whenever a rumor spreads.

I find myself wondering how word of [name]'s deeds spread so quickly. That the Immortal Flames should know of her/his triumph is to be expected...but what of the other Grand Companies?

Grand Company Officers: Lady Minfilia!

Minfilia

Very well...

Though I am quite sure you need no reminding, mayhap a brief summary of the situation would help to clarify your thoughts on this matter. As you know, the Grand Companies are all-encompassing organizations empowered to call upon the martial, economic, and technological resources of their respective city–states in times of strife.

There are presently three such organizations in Eorzea: the Maelstrom of Limsa Lominsa, the Order of the Twin Adder of Gridania, and the Immortal Flames of Ul'dah.

Serving a Grand Company means serving the nation to which it belongs. You will be charged with its defense, and tasked with advancing its cause.

In return for your faithful service, you will be furnished with various rewards, some of which may well prove useful to you in your other endeavors.

If you are agonizing over which of the Grand Companies best deserves your loyalty, be at ease─the commitment you make this day need not be permanent. Should you wish to shift your allegiance at a later date, you are entitled to do so. And yet...I concede that it is no small choice you face...

Ah! A thought occurs to me! You will, of course, recall that the three city–states are planning to hold remembrance services.

Well, as part of the proceedings, I am given to understand that the leader of each Grand Company will deliver an address.

Hearing these addresses ought to help you make an informed decision. What say you, my dear officers?

Serpent officer

A fine suggestion!

Flame officer

You are as wise as you are beautiful, my lady!

Storm officer

Very well! Let [name] hear our leaders speak, then return here with her/his decision.

Grand Company Officers: We eagerly await your answer!

Minfilia

I know full well that adventurers are by their nature a liberty-loving breed, and not best suited to the discipline of military service, but I strongly urge you to join a Grand Company nonetheless. While the promise of reward is enticing in itself, it is not the only benefit.

You are possessed of great power, [name], and with it you are capable of doing untold good. Yet know that great power is wont to attract attention─not all of it friendly.

‘Besides, people with abilities like yours are more effective within large organizations.’ English warns great power attracts unfriendly attention; French says such abilities work better in large organizations.
‘Besides, this way you can exert greater influence on the fortunes of a city-state.’ English warns great power attracts unfriendly attention; German says joining gives you more influence over a city-state.

There will be those who wish you ill, and you must needs be on the lookout for them. Yet however vigilant you are, you are but one woman/man. In the midst of a Grand Company, however, you will be one woman/man amongst many─a friend amongst friends. Your achievements will be shared, and so will the danger. I can think of no better arrangement.

‘Someone with your outstanding abilities can accomplish a lot in a Grand Company, and the personal advantages are not to be sneezed at either.’ English stresses shared danger and protection; German stresses personal advantages.

Of course, joining one organization need not mean leaving another. I hope that we can continue to rely upon your aid─the Twelve know that we will have need of it in the days ahead.

The Grand Companies seek to protect their own nations. We Scions, on the other hand, seek to preserve the future of Eorzea as a whole. Similar, yet not quite the same.

Now then, I expect that you will be afield more often in the future.

As such, I would have you carry this linkpearl with you at all times. It will allow us to stay in touch regardless of location.

Eorzea is changing, [name], and you have the power to help shape it anew.

None can say what the morrow will bring, but so long as we believe in ourselves, there is naught we cannot achieve.

‘Anyway, don't worry, whatever happens, I will keep accompanying you.’ English says believing in themselves lets them achieve anything; French promises to stay by your side.
‘And of course I will support you as best I can.’ English says believing in themselves lets them achieve anything; German promises her full support.
‘So I mean to stay by your side.’ English says believing in themselves lets them achieve anything; Japanese promises to stay by your side.

Now, it is time you made ready for your journey. Before you depart, be sure to speak to Tataru. She will apprise you as to where and when the remembrance services are due to take place.

Speak with Tataru.

Tataru

I, um... I'm sorry about all the attention you're getting, [name]... I might have sung your praises a little too loudly...and often...to a few too many people. Ahem. Next time, I'll be sure to hold my tongue─literally, if necessary.

‘I really thought I was going to get into trouble!’ English apologizes for the attention you are getting; French is relieved she nearly got into trouble herself.
‘That was a close call.’ English apologizes for the attention you are getting; Japanese only says that was a close call.

Anyway, I expect you want to know where and when the remembrance services are taking place?

If all goes to plan, Gridania's Grand Company, the Order of the Twin Adder, will hold the first of the three services, and Elder Seedseer Kan–E–Senna will deliver her address at Mih Khetto's Amphitheatre.

‘On the one hand there will be that of Admiral Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn of Limsa Lominsa, which will take place in the war room of the Admiral's Bridge, on the Upper Decks.’ English says Gridania's service comes first; French lists Merlwyb's in Limsa Lominsa first.
‘So, the remembrance ceremony in Limsa Lominsa will be held in the Stateroom, where Admiral Merlwyb will speak.’ English says Gridania's service comes first; German starts with the one in Limsa Lominsa.
‘First, Limsa Lominsa's "Maelstrom".’ English says Gridania's service comes first; Japanese says Limsa Lominsa's comes first.

I should probably mention at this point that due to the organizational challenges involved in assembling all of the involved parties, it's possible that the order of the services might change... Still, there's not much we can do about that, so make Gridania your first port of call.

‘Once in town, speak to Zanthael to take the lift that leads to the war room.’ English warns the order may change and says go to Gridania first; French gives directions to the lift via Zanthael.
‘You reach the Stateroom by the Admiral's Lift, in front of which Zanthael usually stands guard.’ English warns the order may change and says go to Gridania first; German gives directions to the lift.
‘Sergeant Zanthael is in front of the Admiral's Lift.’ English warns the order may change and says go to Gridania first; Japanese gives directions to Zanthael at the lift.

Next, you'll need to go to Ul'dah, where Flame General Raubahn Aldynn will be addressing the masses at the Royal Promenade. Oh, and it's rumored there's to be a special guest! How exciting.

‘On the other hand, Kan-E-Senna, the Oracle of Gridania who also leads the Order of the Twin Adder, will give her speech at the amphitheater of Mih Khetto, in the old town.’ English sends you to Ul'dah next; French presents Gridania's service next.
  • DE Die Gedenkfeier in Gridania findet in Mih Khettos Amphitheater statt. ‘The remembrance ceremony in Gridania takes place in Mih Khetto's Amphitheatre.’ English sends you to Ul'dah next; German presents Gridania's service next.
‘Next, Gridania's "Order of the Twin Adder".’ English sends you to Ul'dah next; Japanese names Gridania's service next.

Last but not least, you must make your way to the Stateroom in Limsa Lominsa, where Maelstrom Chief Admiral Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn will be giving her address.

‘Finally, there is the address of General Raubahn Aldynn, who will be accompanied by a special guest, according to rumor.’ English ends with Limsa Lominsa's service; French ends with Raubahn's in Ul'dah.
‘In Ul'dah the Royal Promenade serves as the venue and the speech will be given by Raubahn, and the Sultana can be expected to attend as well.’ English ends with Limsa Lominsa's service; German ends with the one in Ul'dah.
‘Finally, Ul'dah's "Immortal Flames".’ English ends with Limsa Lominsa's service; Japanese ends with Ul'dah's.

The room is accessible via the Admiral's Lift. Identify yourself to the sentry, Zanthael, and he will admit you. Got all that?

‘All you have to do is start with whichever one you like.’ English gives directions via the sentry Zanthael; French says you may start with any city you like.
  • DE Die Reihenfolge, in der du die Städte besuchst, bleibt also dir überlassen. ‘The order in which you visit the cities is therefore up to you.’ English gives directions via the sentry Zanthael; German says the order of the visits is up to you.
‘Arrangements have been made so you can enter every speech venue, so why not go around in whatever order you like?’ English gives directions via the sentry Zanthael; Japanese says you may visit in any order you like.

Well, off you go, then. I hope you find the remembrance services suitably educational! I suggest visiting the city–states in my prescribed order, though with your record of impeccable timing and luck, the schedule may well change in favor of your preferred travel plans. Farewell!

‘When you start to become famous, it is harder to get around discreetly, isn't it?’ English suggests following her prescribed order; French jokes that fame makes moving about discreetly harder.
‘A long road lies ahead of you, but as a sought-after hero one is always on the move.’ English suggests following her prescribed order; German jokes that a sought-after hero is always on the move.
‘Once you become popular, it's hard work running here and there, isn't it.’ English suggests following her prescribed order; Japanese jokes that popularity keeps you running everywhere.

Attend the remembrance service at the Stateroom in Limsa Lominsa.

Alphinaud

The Ul'dahns have a long history of conflict with the Amalj'aa, the beast tribe that worships the primal Ifrit.

Judging by your look of distaste, I take it you have encountered them.

The Ul'dahns do not shy from confrontation. If aught threatens their precious prosperity, they will seek to crush it.

So have they dealt with Ifrit thus far, smothering his flames each time he is stoked to life.

Yet he is but one of several problems. Though they have been quiet these past five years, the Garleans have not gone away.

‘But with the Amalj'aa having set themselves up as a common enemy, they had to find common ground.’ English says the Garleans have not gone away; French says the Amalj'aa as common enemy forced two rival factions together.
‘The external threat even had a positive side effect: it strengthened internal cohesion, because it papered over the internal quarrels between the royalists and the republicans.’ English says the Garleans have not gone away; German says the outside threat united quarreling royalists and republicans.
‘What's more, they even used the Amalj'aa as a "common enemy" to firm up a country shaken by the conflict between republicans and royalists.’ English says the Garleans have not gone away; Japanese says the Amalj'aa were used as a common enemy to unite rival factions.

Meanwhile, refugees continue to arrive in droves, and Ul'dah has no clear policy on how to deal with them.

After all, not even the sultanate's coffers are bottomless. And even assuming they had the coin, resources will ever be finite.

‘The moment is not favorable for an all-out war.’ English says even the sultanate's coffers are not bottomless; French says it is no time for all-out war.
‘The city-state is too weak to risk an open war, and therefore stays passive.’ English says even the sultanate's coffers are not bottomless; German says the city is too weak to risk open war.
‘In this situation, they cannot lightly start an all-out war.’ English says even the sultanate's coffers are not bottomless; Japanese says they cannot lightly start an all-out war.

Which brings me back to the subject of Ifrit. It has been observed that the Amalj'aa are summoning him with ever-increasing frequency.

Every time they do so, the Ul'dahns send their forces to smite the primal, and though they invariably succeed, each victory is bought with blood. It is a war of attrition which they cannot well sustain.

Small wonder, then, that the Immortal Flames are eager to recruit more members.

At such a desperate hour, an adventurer of your experience would be a most welcome addition to their ranks.

For their sake, I hope that the Flame General's words struck a chord with you.

‘In a way, that speech was a little about you...’ English hopes the Flame General's words struck a chord; French suggests the speech was partly about you.
‘I even had the feeling that the speech was subtly aimed at you.’ English hopes the Flame General's words struck a chord; German suggests the speech was secretly aimed at you.
‘It may have been meant for you, you know.’ English hopes the Flame General's words struck a chord; Japanese suggests the speech may have been meant for you.

The Gridanians are unfortunate enough to have to contend with two beast tribes.

The Ixal are unquestionably the more troublesome, being of a naturally warlike disposition, and wont to summon their bloodthirsty primal, Garuda.

The sylphs, by contrast, are peaceful in nature, being mischievous rather than malevolent, and have long been on friendly terms with the Gridanians─until recently, at least. Alas, they have grown aloof, a change observed at roughly the time they summoned the primal Ramuh.

‘They are not fundamentally hostile to Gridania, but their relationship with us has steadily worsened and there are rumors that they want to summon their primal Ramuh.’ English says the sylphs summoned Ramuh; German says there are only rumors that they want to summon him.

The Gridanians have no love for war, and they consider open conflict a last resort.

Though they clash with the Ixal ever more regularly, you may be assured that they do so in self-defense. As for the sylphs...they are as yet bound by a peace treaty, though one wonders how long it will be before it is broken.

The Twelveswood was grievously wounded during the Calamity, leaving Gridania vulnerable to attack. The people are hopeful that restoring the wood─and thereby the power of the elementals─will put an end to their woes. Yet how long will that take? Centuries, I'd wager.

  • DE Solange in ihrem Waldreich Frieden herrscht, interessiert sie nicht, was außerhalb passiert. ‘As long as peace reigns in their forest realm, they do not care what happens outside.’ English doubts the wood can heal in less than centuries; German says Gridanians ignore what happens outside their forest.

Meanwhile, the Ixal will continue their incursions, spurred on by Garuda and her insatiable appetite for destruction.

Whether the Gridanians like it or not, sooner or later it will come to all-out war. And when it does, the Order of the Twin Adder will need all the help it can muster.

...How valuable might the aid of a capable adventurer prove to them then?

Well, perhaps we will find out─if the Elder Seedseer's words fell on fertile ground...

‘In a way, Kan-E-Senna's words were partly addressed to you...’ English wonders whether the Seedseer's words fell on fertile ground; French says her words were partly addressed to you.

Zanthael

Here to attend the remembrance service? Be quick─the Admiral is due to give her address at any moment.

If you're not interested in attending, make way for those who are.

Alphinaud

As the Admiral mentioned in her address, Limsa Lominsa is plagued by two beast tribes.

The first are the fishlike Sahagin, worshipers of the primal Leviathan.

The second are the kobolds, who dwell beneath the earth, and take the primal Titan for their god.

As if the beast tribes' presence weren't troublesome enough, the Garleans have also chosen to erect a fortress right in the Lominsans' backyard.

And that is to say naught of internal strife. As a nation of pirates, there is no end to the blood feuds between the various factions. And while they fight amongst themselves, the Garleans whet their blades and watch.

‘With all these problems to handle at once, the city struggles to react promptly and has great trouble not capsizing in a storm of infighting.’ English says the Garleans sharpen their blades and watch the feuding; French says the city struggles to react in time.
‘Limsa's leadership is overwhelmed by all the problems and threats and can only take makeshift countermeasures.’ English says the Garleans sharpen their blades and watch the feuding; German says the overwhelmed leadership can only improvise.
‘Though it carries many threats and problems, every policy lags behind events and the balance is close to collapsing.’ English says the Garleans sharpen their blades and watch the feuding; Japanese says every policy lags and the balance may collapse.

If the Lominsans are to have any hope of withstanding the Empire, they must first resolve their own affairs. Differences must be set aside, and the primal threat dealt with once and for all.

To this end, I expect that they will soon take decisive action against the beast tribes. Mark my words, the Maelstrom standard will be drenched a deeper shade of crimson ere long.

That a capable adventurer like you would be a valuable addition to their crew is beyond question.

But will you sail with the Admiral?

‘In a way, the Admiral's words were partly addressed to you...’ English asks whether you will sail with the Admiral; French says her words were partly addressed to you.
‘I had the impression that it was practically tailored to you.’ English asks whether you will sail with the Admiral; German says the speech seemed tailored to you.

Report to Minfilia at the Waking Sands.

Minfilia

[name], this is Minfilia. You are well, I hope? Would I be correct in thinking that the final remembrance service has now concluded?

A moment ago, you say? What a coincidence!

‘I contacted you thinking you would be about done listening to each nation's speech by now.’ English calls the timing a coincidence; Japanese says she called because she expected you to be done by now.

Jesting aside, I trust you remember our guests from the Grand Companies? Well, delighted though we are to have them here at the Waking Sands, it would not do to keep them in suspense any longer than necessary. In short: hurry back!

Welcome back, [name]. Were the Grand Company leaders' words as illuminating as you had hoped?

Aye, each nation is beset with problems. I trust you see now why your services are in such demand. Would that there were more of you, [name].

‘But it is up to you to choose which city you want to help, and what you will do there.’ English wishes there were more people like you; French says the choice of city is yours.
  • DE Die Wahl liegt allein bei dir. ‘The choice is yours alone.’ English wishes there were more people like you; German says the choice is yours alone.
‘What to choose, what to do... everything is up to you.’ English wishes there were more people like you; Japanese says everything is up to you.

But you must be tired from your journey. Why don't you rest awhile, and take a moment to reflect on your decision? Once your mind is made up, pray give the Grand Company officers your answer.

Flame officer

The Flame General is a passionate man, and his words never fail to light a fire in the belly of those who listen. I am sure you will be no exception!

Serpent officer

The Elder Seedseer speaks only truth, and her words have the power to touch the soul. At the sound of her voice, all fall silent and attend her.

‘When one hears Kan-E-Senna's words, one feels that our destiny is more closely woven with Gridania's than with any other place.’ English praises her soul-touching words; German says hearing her makes one feel bound by destiny to Gridania.
‘You, surely, can understand her noble aspirations!’ English says all fall silent at her voice; Japanese says you surely can understand her noble aspirations.

Storm officer

When the Admiral speaks, even pirates listen, and that is no small thing. She is a born leader─the kind one would gladly follow to the seventh hell!

‘The Maelstrom is your destiny - until the sea embraces you in death!’ English calls her a leader one would follow to the seventh hell; German says the Maelstrom is your destiny.
‘I guarantee you too will want to adore her as "Big Sis"!’ English calls her a leader one would follow to the seventh hell; Japanese says you will want to adore her as Big Sis.
