Hidden
Easter egg Papalymo calls Ramuh the 'Lord of Levin'. 'Levin' is an old, poetic word for lightning, which fits Ramuh's 'thunderous judgment'.
Spoiler about later in the story

Foreshadowing Remember the crystal Frixio gives you. He says 'that crystal will one day be of use' and asks you to keep it safe at all times.

In-game text The letter's item text jokes that Frixio's handwriting is 'as beautiful as it is unintelligible'.
Title reference The title plays on 'believe in yourself', with 'sylph' in place of 'self'. To believe in someone means to have confidence in them, and the quest is about Gridania trusting the sylphs.
Characters 6
  • Yda

Yda is at Little Solace with Papalymo to speak with Frixio for Gridania.

What you know from earlier quests 9
    • #97 Into a Copper Hell: Yda cries "Case closed!" when the bully backs off, and teases that you were kind of dragged into the dodo-meat business. Yda names their order: the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, "defenders of justice." Only Momodi may know.
    • #99 The Scions of the Seventh Dawn: In one version of this scene, you come at the request of Yda and Papalymo, and Tataru is startled to hear their names.
    • #100 A Wild Rose by Any Other Name: Yda is the masked woman. Minfilia says she is an Archon, one of the Sharlayan scholars who stayed to protect Eorzea. She watches over the Twelveswood with Papalymo. She greets you cheerfully and was sure you'd agree.
    • #114 Sylph-management: Yda describes the sylphs as floating gysahl greens that worship Ramuh. She says Gridania does not even know what to worry about. She eagerly agrees to go to Gridania.
    • #115 We Come in Peace: Yda tells the commander that other business brings them today. She hopes the talk with the sylphs is as simple as Papalymo says.
    • #118 First Contact: Yda arrives at Little Solace and greets Komuxio as an envoy from Gridania. She is shocked when he sends them away, and wonders if your dance was not good enough.

  • Papalymo

Papalymo is at Little Solace with Yda, carrying a letter from the Elder Seedseer to Frixio.

What you know from earlier quests 9
    • #97 Into a Copper Hell: Papalymo has watched you since you left Gridania: you served well as envoy and helped people without pay. Papalymo offers to explain your visions, mentions a friend with the same gift, and asks you to join their cause. Momodi knows where to find them.
    • #99 The Scions of the Seventh Dawn: In one version of this scene, you come at the request of Yda and Papalymo, and Tataru is startled to hear their names.
    • #100 A Wild Rose by Any Other Name: Papalymo is an Archon, one of the Sharlayan scholars who stayed to protect Eorzea. He watches over the Twelveswood with Yda. He was confident you would help, and he calls Thancred their man in Ul'dah.
    • #114 Sylph-management: Papalymo explains that the sylphs worship the primal Ramuh but seem unable to summon it now. He warns the threat may not be over, and notes that Gridania is busy fighting Garuda. He agrees to go, reminding Yda it is "Us, Yda. Us!"
    • #115 We Come in Peace: Papalymo agrees it is better to be safe than sorry about Ramuh. He expects a pleasant chat with the sylphs and knows the ferry from Westshore Pier goes to the Hawthorne Hut.

    • #120 Forest Friend: Papalymo says tales of good deeds spread fast. The sylphs of Little Solace were driven from their home, so he suggests easing their troubles. Since sylphs rarely share worries with outsiders, he sends you to Hearer Imedia.
    • #122 Brotherly Love: Papalymo explains that the attacking sylphs are tempered: under the control of the primal Ramuh, like the Amalj'aa tempered by Ifrit, they serve only their god. He fights a strange morbol, then wishes for a hot bath.
    • #132 Into the Beast's Maw: Papalymo explains that Frixio, eldest of the sylphs of Little Solace, speaks for them with the Gridanians. He fears losing him would undo all their work. He tends to Knolexia's wounds and sends you to save Frixio.

What you know from earlier quests 9

    • #100 A Wild Rose by Any Other Name: Minfilia welcomes you to the Scions and introduces its leaders. She thinks people forget you because of the power Louisoix used to save your life. She asks you to lead an investigation into crimes in Ul'dah that may involve a primal, a godlike being.
    • #101 Unsolved Mystery: Isembard says Minfilia names the Amalj'aa as the culprits behind the disappearances, so he advises you to look into them first.

    • #107 Life, Materia and Everything: Minfilia lends you a dagger to take to Mutamix. She admires how much one piece of materia improves it, and urges you to use materia, since good gear can decide victory or defeat. She then turns to your next mission.
    • #108 Lord of the Inferno: Minfilia is relieved to see you safe. With Thancred, she explains that primals feed on crystals and worship. She says those with the Echo, like you, cannot be tempered, or forced to serve a primal. She leaves out the captives' fate.
    • #111 A Hero in the Making: Minfilia warns that fame has a price. Officers from all three Grand Companies (city armies) come to recruit you. She urges you to join one for safety among friends, gives you a linkpearl to keep in touch, and hopes you still aid the Scions.
    • #113 Till Sea Swallows All: Minfilia calls you by linkpearl to congratulate you on joining the Maelstrom. She reminds you that you are still a Scion and asks you back to the Waking Sands. There she says Biggs and Wedge are now under the Scions' protection.

What you know from earlier quests 3

    • #115 We Come in Peace: Vorsaile fears the sylphs' link to the primal Ramuh could upset the peace with Gridania. He wants to hear the sylphs of Little Solace through a neutral go-between. He warns that sylph manners differ from ours and sends you to the Hawthorne Hut.
    • #123 Spirited Away: Vorsaile fears a crisis if the tempered sylphs get hold of the elder. He puts his sharpest-eyed soldiers on watch and sends you to Giah Molkoh to bring the Wood Wailers into the search.

What you know from earlier quests 5

    • #120 Forest Friend: Komuxio is pleased with the brownie brushes, since he can dye thread again. He hates the biting, buzzing beasts you killed. He admits few visitors are this friendly and thinks he was wrong not to trust you.
    • #121 Presence of the Enemy: Komuxio fears steel-clad strangers from the Empire, who kill and burn forests. He sends you to ask around, marks their hideout on your map, and reads the log you find. Its supplies come from the sylphs' home, so he suspects a traitor.
    • #122 Brotherly Love: Komuxio begs you to find his friend Claxio before beasts or tempered sylphs take him, and tells you to follow spools of thread. Overjoyed at the rescue, he calls you a hero and wants to take you to the elder, but hesitates.
    • #123 Spirited Away: Komuxio admits the elder went into the forest yesterday and has not come back. He asks you to talk to Buscarron, who lives nearby, since people do not always trust sylphs, and to seek help in Gridania.
  • Y'shtola

What you know from earlier quests 7
    • #37 Lurkers in the Grotto: Her name is Y'shtola; she studies aether and hunts the kidnappers too. After you beat an enraged goobbue together, she finds a sailor's knife in it and suspects pirates. Your talk of a towering crystal surprises her. Staelwyrn vouches for her.
    • #47 Just Deserts: After the golem fight, near Y'shtola you see a vision of her past: she fears the beast tribes may summon primals (summoned gods), as Louisoix foretold. She can see aether. She calls herself a naturalist, links the pirates to the Sahagin, and takes Sevrin home.
    • #69 Feint and Strike: Y'shtola arrives when she senses the masked mage and fights beside you. She names him an Ascian, one of the "Bringers of Chaos" who steer the beast tribes. She is a Sharlayan and, surprised you know it, decides you have "a special gift."
    • #71 A Mizzenmast Repast: Y'shtola sees an extraordinary glow and names it one of the Crystals of Light. She recalls the vision of a towering crystal you had after your encounter with the goobbue, and concludes that you bathed in Her Light. Merlwyb agrees.
    • #97 Into a Copper Hell: She appears after you help the woman, saying she has watched you since you left Limsa Lominsa. She praises your humble, selfless deeds, but your visions interest her most; a friend shares that gift. She invites you to join the Scions of the Seventh Dawn.
    • #99 The Scions of the Seventh Dawn: Tataru is startled when you say you are here at Y'shtola's request, and quickly lets you in.
    • #100 A Wild Rose by Any Other Name: Y'shtola is an Archon who looks after Limsa Lominsa. She says their leader was taken from them at the Battle of Carteneau. Then they found Minfilia and others with the Echo, a rare talent, and founded the Scions of the Seventh Dawn.

Accepting the quest

Vorsaile

Ah, if it isn't [name]/)/> [name]. How went the meeting with the sylphs?

A missive from the sylph elder himself!? If I may...

So the sylphs have no desire for conflict, nor do they intend to summon Ramuh.

And so long as we leave the tempered ones be, we need not fear any aggression on their part.

The Elder Seedseer will be overjoyed to hear that the sylphs have welcomed our overtures. And in the knowledge that they bear us no ill will, we may channel our resources towards tackling the more conspicuous threats to our security.

You have done this nation a great service, my friend/You have done our nation a great service, )/> [name]. On behalf of all Gridanians, I give you my thanks/It will not be forgotten.

Stand /lookout east of Little Solace.

Komuxio

This one has been expecting walking one! This one fetches elder one!

Deliver Frixio's missive to Vorsaile Heuloix.

Frixio

This one is pleased to see walking one again. Welcome to the home of these ones.

Papalymo

Ah, there you are, [name]. We have just been hearing tell of your deeds of derring-do. Well done!

Frixio

Ah, the walking ones who aided Noraxia! This one is grateful!

Papalymo

A pleasure to have been of service. If you do not mind my asking, how did your misadventure come about?

Frixio

This one does not mind. The misadventures, as walking one calls them, of this one began when imperial ones entered the wood. Fearing trouble, these ones decided to watch imperial ones closely.

But these ones watched too closely, and imperial ones noticed and tried to catch these ones.

Having nowhere else to hide, this one fled into Toto–Rak. Would that this one had not. In Toto–Rak, a sinister one robed in black tried to feed this one to a many-legged one!

  • DE Die unsrigen Atemlosigen haben sich in den tiefigen Höhlen von Toto-Rak versteckt ... aber ein Düstriger mit einer Maske wollte die Unsrigen an Monstrige verfüttern! ‘The breathless ones of ours hid in the deep caves of Toto-Rak ... but a dark one with a mask wanted to feed ours to monsters!’ English describes the attacker as robed in black; German describes him as wearing a mask.

Yda

A sinister one robed in black...? Why do I have the feeling I should be more worried about that than I am?

Papalymo

Elder Frixio, we come to you as emissaries of the nation of Gridania. This missive bears the words of the Elder Seedseer.

Frixio

This one sees... So walking ones of Gridania are fearful of Lord Ramuh.

Papalymo

Plainly put, yes. Your people summoned the Lord of Levin but once, yet that single occurrence occasioned great alarm.

Yda

But it's not as if the Gridanians dislike you or anything. Actually, it's just the opposite. They think of you as friends, and they don't want anything to get in the way of that. That's why the Elder Seedseer wrote to you.

Frixio

Hmmm... This one well knows and respects horned one Kan–E–Senna. Be assured: like walking ones of Gridania, these ones have no desire for conflict.

These ones resorted to summoning Lord Ramuh to protect the wood from imperial ones. This one counseled against doing so, but was not heeded.

Against this one's wishes, Lord Ramuh was summoned...and all those ones who took part became touched ones.

These ones want so desperately to turn touched ones back to normal ones, but did not know how─and still do not know.

Touched ones, meanwhile, wanted to turn these ones into touched ones, and did know how... So this one fled to Little Solace with all those ones who did not wish to be bound to Lord Ramuh.

But walking ones of Gridania need not fear touched ones or Lord Ramuh. Unlike other primal ones, Lord Ramuh is not callous and cruel.

  • FR En tout cas, sachez que Ramuh est le Dieu de la protection et de la médiation. ‘In any case, know that Ramuh is the God of protection and mediation.’ English says Ramuh, unlike other primals, is not callous and cruel; French calls him the god of protection and mediation.
  • JA 「ラムウ」ちゃまは、守護と調停の神ちゃまなのでぶっち。 ‘Lord "Ramuh" is a god of protection and mediation.’ English says Ramuh, unlike other primals, is not callous and cruel; Japanese calls him the god of protection and mediation.

So long as walking ones do not trespass on these ones' ancestral homeland, where touched ones reside, walking ones will not suffer thunderous judgment.

  • FR Je doute qu'il ne fasse subir son éclair du jugement sans bonne raison. ‘I doubt he would inflict his lightning of judgment without good reason.’ English: no judgment unless they trespass on the sylph homeland; French: he would not strike without good reason.

But this one has spoken enough of touched ones. This one would speak instead of these ones. As this one said, these ones desire peace with walking ones of Gridania. And so these ones ask for a chance to set things right.

Papalymo

By way of an addendum, mortals who are tempered come to take on the qualities embodied by the primal in question. In the case of the sylphs, Ramuh's influence has made them fiercely protective of their homeland.

Yda

That explains why they're so hostile towards trespassers, but what about the abductions?

Papalymo

A fine question, Yda! The abductions are, I believe, an expression of the tempered sylphs' desire for reconciliation─another quality traditionally associated with Ramuh. In the crudest manner imaginable, they seek to bring their fellows back into the fold. A timely reminder that the challenges posed by each primal are unique.

Elder Frixio, we thank you for making your will known to us. The people of Gridania will rest easier in the knowledge that they and the sylphs are united in their desire for peace.

Frixio

Wishing to cooperate, this one has written down the feelings of these ones. Please see that these feelings are conveyed to horned one Kan–E–Senna.

Papalymo

And with that, I believe we can lay the matter of Ramuh to rest.

Yda

That sylph elder's very reasonable, I must say. You could learn a lot from him.

Papalymo

...Hm!? Was that a jibe? If so, I feel it only fair to observe that one of us wouldn't recognize reason if it punched her on the nose. Did I say fair? I meant: reasonable.

  • FR Je vais finir par changer de partenaire ! ‘I'm going to end up changing partners!’ English puns on "fair" and "reasonable"; French threatens to change partners.
  • JA そんなだから、ヤ・シュトラに更生してやるって言われるんだぞ! ‘That's why Y'shtola tells you she'll reform you!’ English puns on "fair" and "reasonable"; Japanese says that is why Y'shtola wants to reform her.

Yda

Anyway, we're going to head back to the Waking Sands and tell Minfilia all about it.

Papalymo

Fear not─we will be sure to mention the instrumental part you played in all of this. And while we see to that, we should appreciate it if you would deliver Frixio's missive to the Adders' Nest.

Elder Frixio, we humbly thank you for your time. It has been an honor.

Frixio

The honor is this one's. Together, let the walking ones of Gridania and these ones find a way to live in peace.

Please wait, walking one [name].

This one has yet to give walking one a token of this one's appreciation.

When these ones summoned Lord Ramuh, these ones were gifted this crystal. This one would now bestow the crystal upon walking one as a symbol of these ones' trust.

  • FR Je ne suis pas tout à fait certain de sa signification. ‘I am not entirely certain of its meaning.’ English gives the crystal as a symbol of trust; French says he is unsure what it means.

This one was not mistaken about walking one.

Walking one is destined to walk a fate far crueler than this one can imagine.

  • DE Bestimmt wird die/der Deinige von einem großen Schicksal erwartet. ‘Surely yours is awaited by a great destiny.’ English foresees a fate far crueler than he can imagine; German foresees a great destiny.

A brilliant light from within walking one enveloped the crystal─this one saw.

  • DE Der Kristall von Ramuh hat einen hellen Schein in der/dem Deinigen erweckt. ‘Ramuh's crystal has awakened a bright glow in yours.’ English says light from within the hero enveloped the crystal; German says the crystal awakened a glow in the hero.

Mark this one well: that crystal will one day be of use to walking one. Walking one must keep that crystal safe at all times.

Komuxio

Before walking one returns to Gridania, this one would ask walking one to watch touched ones.

So long as touched ones are not troubled, touched ones will not make trouble.

If walking one witnesses touched ones making no trouble, mayhap walking one can testify to walking ones of Gridania that these ones mean no harm.

These ones' homeland is fraught with danger. This one marks down safe places to look out for touched ones.
